Dr.JackFisher,MDpresentedthepreliminaryresultsofastudycomparingtheeffectivenessoffourantimicrobialirrigationsonplanktonicformandamaturebiofilmofRalstoniaPickettiionthreedifferenttypesofsiliconebreastimplants.Bothroughandsmoothtexturedimplantswereutilizedtodeterminewhichsolutionscouldresultineradicationofbothplanktonicandbiofilmorganismsusingtimekillassaysatclinicalconcentrationsoftripleantibioticsolution,chlorhexidinegluconate,povidone-iodineandpurehypochlorousacidinsalinestabilizedinamberglass.TripleantibioticsolutionwasreportedtohavenoimpactonR.pickettiiplanktonicbacteriaduringinitialtestingandwasthereforedroppedfromthestudy.Allothersolutionseffectivelyeliminatedallplanktonicorganismsrapidlywithinthefirst1minuteassessmenttime.However,solutionsweredifferentiatedintheirabilitytopenetrateanderadicateR.pickettiinthebiofilmassays.ChlorhexidineGluconatehadnoeffectonreducingthebiofilmassociatedorganismsat5minutesand2hoursfortwodifferenttypesofimplants.Povidone-IodineshowedreductioninCFU/mLon2differenttypesofimplantsandrequired2hoursforcompleteeradication.Onlypurehypochlorousacid0.025%stabilizedinamberglass(PhaseOne®)showederadicationofallbiofilmon3typesofimplantsinthefirstfiveminutes.Thesepreliminaryresultssuggestthat0.025%HOCl(PhaseOne®)waseffectiveineradicatingRalstoniapickettiibothinplanktonicandbiofilmforms.Moreresearchisrequiredtosubstantiatethesepreliminaryresults.Thefullstudyresultsaredetailedinanupcomingmanuscriptcurrentlyin-press.
