5 Components of a Good Resume con’t
• Skills and Strengths• List your skills and strengths. Even if you’ve never held a paid job
before, you have skills. What are they? When you write about your skills and strengths:
• Use short bullet points rather than complete sentences.
• Use action words.
• Use numbers and percentages to quantify your accomplishments.
• Mention your technical or computer skills.
• Experience• List any paid or volunteer jobs you’ve held. Describe each position
briefly using bullet points. You can also list extracurricular activities or community service, particularly if these activities highlight a skill or show a level of responsibility or dedication. You can also list academic or community awards you’ve received.

Activity Chart (for college applications)
• What are readers looking for?• Extra-curricular activities within school or community
(such as clubs and sports)
• Community service (through school, clubs, or independent)
• Employment
• Leadership (including roles assumed within other activities and employment)
• Other significant or noteworthy obligations that do not fit in the above categories such as parenting.
Things To Remember• Treat the activities chart like a resume.
• Highlight your accomplishments and/or most impressive responsibilities.
• Fully detail you responsibilities for each activity. Just because you worked in an office doesn’t mean the reader knows what you did. Do not make the readers guess!
• Use action verbs and key words
• Where appropriate break big commitments into multiple activities.
• Example: If you played basketball all four years in high school but your senior year you were team captain, list the first three years as basketball and the last year as basketball team captain.
• Example: If you were involved in an Honor Society and had a couple volunteer projects that were a substantial time commitment and/or you had a leadership role, then make those activities separate entries.
