President’s Message
Greetings to Everyone.
We started off our” New Year” with a wonderful ‘WELCOME
BACK TEA” hosted by Karen Thomas! Thank you so much for
your warm hospitality. It was great seeing everyone after our
summer break. Thanks to Donna Gillette, we began to raise
funds for our scholarships by passing out envelopes with raffle
tickets. Sea Side gallery has once again donated a generous
$250.00 gift certificate for the winner. Please get an envelope
with tickets at our next meeting in October from Donna.
Our theme continues with the acronym PEARL which means:
Philanthropy, Education, Advocacy, Research and Leadership. Thanks
to our Program Committee we look forward to meetings each month
that provide interesting and educational topics which expand on that
theme.
We personally want to invite all of you to participate and enjoy our new chapter in
AAUW. Both Alice and I are looking forward to a great start for the coming year!
Your Co-president,
Mo Briggs-Remis.

BOOK SALE NEWS
The Book Sale Committee is already getting started under the leadership of our
President & Chair, Alice Addison. At the September Tea, Alice welcomed the following
members who volunteered to work on the committee: Maurina Kusell, Linda Lidberg,
Rose Ann Steiner, Abby Adams, and Joyce Fluaitt. As the expenses of our local Branch
projects continue to grow, along with those of Branch operations, the financial success
of the Book Sale is more important than ever. With a few more members on the
organizing committee to share the various tasks that have to be done, no one commit-
tee member would be over burdened. The committee will only meet once or twice after
the first of the year and we hope that new members will join this endeavor; we wel-
come their new ideas and it is a great way to become involved in the Branch. New and
long standing members….PLEASE call Alice Addison or Pat Muhlethaler and say we
can count on you!

Legislative activism has a long history in AAUW. Members first lobbied for women’s
suffrage in 1892 and have continued to be responsive to the critical issues of the
times.
The AAUW California Public Policy program supports its mission to advance equity for
women and girls through advocacy, education and research.
You can find the California AAUW priorities that were voted upon in April 2011 at the
CA Convention in Irvine on www.aauw-ca.org. They include priorities in equity,
education and societal change. A few examples are:
1. Supporting enforcement of CA Title V and Federal Title IX regulations on
gender equity.
2. Programs that provide women and girls with education, training and support
for long-term success in the work force and the community. (You’ll be hear
ing more about Smart Start which helps women with budgeting and to
negotiate better salaries).
3. Programs that support societal change to promote social, economic and
physical well-being of all individuals and families, such as affordable and
quality health care or freedom from violence and fear in homes, schools,
workplaces, and communities.
You will also find the “Two Minute Activist” on the California AAUW website above to
find out more about what’s happening in Sacramento and what you can do to influence
the outcome. You can make your voice heard in just minutes. Additionally, to join the
national “Action Network” to discover what’s happening in Washington, subscribe
online at www.aauw.org/actionnetwork.
Lastly, as part of the “It’s My Vote, I Will be Heard!” AAUW California action
priority this year, we will be hearing a speaker from League of Women Voters at
our branch meeting on October 15th on The Propositions and Women’s Health Issues. Please save the date and join us to be better informed.
