This year the CWA has collaborated with the
school once again to run a program where all
of year 6 are taught to knit. The program has
benefits for both the students, who learn a
new skill and interact with members of the
community, and for the CWA who connect
with the youth of our town and ensure that
the art of knitting is not lost. We thank the
CWA for all the time and effort they have put
into the program. Right are some photos of
students with their finished projects.
In preparation for our recent fairtastic our
class was lucky enough to have Rosie Jones
come and teach us more about sketching. We
all completed a portrait for Fairtastic. Below
are some of the finished art – can you tell who
they are ? (answers on next page)

tic poem about

In our recent writing assessment Jordan E wrote the
longest piece he has ever written and here it is.
Hi- my name is Bob and I live in a small, little poor
camp.
A letter came home and I opened it and read it. It
said that I could do swimming lessons but I had 4
days to return the letter so I ran downstairs and told
Mum. She read the note and said “sure you can do
it” but it cost $100 .
I really wanted to go so I decided to save up. So I
grabbed my guitar and went down town in my fin-
est clothes (which were really only shaggy old
clothes) . I grabbed my guitar out of it’s old scrappy
cover and started to play. My music struck a chord
with the crowd and when I finished I had over $248
dollars. I raced home to Mum, went through the
sheet that we had for a door and said to Mum
“Mum – I got $248 dollars”. Mum replied “yah!”.
I went down town and bought a bag, a towel, some
goggles and a hat. I said to Mum “what are you
going to buy?” and she said “I’d better not buy any-
thing.”
I felt sad for her so I went down town and did it
again. I made $105 dollars so I went and got Mum
a pair of fashion boots that she has wanted for ag-
es.
Then I ran home but I forgot some wrapping paper
so I climbed up a tree and hid the boots and went
back and bought some paper. I wrapped the boots
just in time for Mum’s birthday.
Mum was so happy she put the boots on straight
away and went for a walk.
The next day I packed my bag for the day and hand-
ed my note in. I jumped on the bus and went to the
swimming pool. I did that for over two weeks and
then I became an Olympic swimmer and won gold in
the Olympic games in London. I made lots of money.
Mum was rich again. She bought a nice house and a
car and we lived happily ever after.

Principal’s Comment
Dear Parents/Carers,
It has been an exciting week for year 5 as
they headed off to Meebunbia adventure
camp with Mr Trotter, Mr Channells and
Terry. With all the rain around we have been
keeping a beady eye on the weather forecast
and it looks like they have been lucky and
had dry weather. The purpose of the camp is
for year 5 to learn about leadership and
develop as a cohesive group in preparation
for them to be strong school leaders in 2014.
Next week year 6 sets off to Sydney for their
celebration of 7 years primary schooling.
Their exciting itinerary sees them camping
overnight at Taronga Zoo, attending School
Spectacular, spending an evening at Luna
Park and walking across the bridge to go out
for dinner. These are only a few of the many
experiences we have planned so it will
definitely be an action packed trip. For those
students who have not been to the ‘big
smoke’ I am sure it will be an eye opener to a
whole new world.
Kindergarten to year 2 will also have their
term 4 excursion to Dolphin Dreaming
excursion next week. School is definitely a
fun place to be. A group of students from
years 2 – 6 are currently completing two
weeks of intensive swimming lessons. Living
on the coast with such a beautiful climate,
water all around us, makes swimming an
important life skill. The students will be able
to put their newfound skills into practice at
our end of year celebration at Murwillumbah
Pool.
This week has seen several changes with a
number of teachers on sick leave as well as
year 6 and 4 merging to allow year 5 to go on
the excursion together. I have been
heartened to watch how resilient our
students are in not only coping with these
changes but also making the casual teachers
in our school feel so welcome. Whenever I
get the opportunity to sit in Mick’s chair it
always reminds me of what a great student
group we have at our school.
Have a lovely weekend

At the moment 5/6M is learning about our government and how it operates. As part
of their assessment students have to choose an issue they feel strongly about and find
ways they can be active citizens and help create change.
Below is part of Lani’s assignment.
Coal seam gas - what is it?
Coal seam gas has been discovered over the years to be coal that stores gas. It is in the
middle of two water tables, one on the top and one on the bottom. People and miners
are trying to dig into the ground with drill rigs to get the “natural gas” out. It is de-
stroying our reefs and water tables. In other countries there have been reports that
when farmers have had this happen on their land their water is flammable. It smells
like chemicals and our wildlife is breathing this chemical in. Many of our native animal
species are reportedly becoming endangered. What right do we have to endanger ani-
mals and destroy the land?
