Inquiry Learning: Taking Apart the Puzzle
for a Deeper Understanding "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I un-derstand." This workshop is an introduction to a method that relies on curiosity and discovery. It's a student-centered approach in which stu-dents view themselves as learners in a process, willingly engage in the exploration process, and raise questions and propose solutions through communication using technology and various activities. The goal in inquiry learning is to lead students towards becoming "experts" in a specific content area: historians, scientists, mathematicians, authors. The workshop will include an in depth study of inquiry learning and time to consider how this method can be applied in the participant's own classroom. Moving in the Right Direction: Forma-
tive Assessment at Work in Grades K-6, 7-12
You're in the woods and all you have are coordinates and a compass. What do you do? Set your compass and head out, never stopping to ensure you haven't wandered off course? Not if you have a true destina-tion in mind. You'd stop now and then, measure your progress and di-rection and adjust when necessary. The same should be said about teaching. Effective teachers use formative assessments as checkpoints to monitor progress towards the goal of student learning. In this workshop we will explore various formative assessment tools and develop an ac-tion plan for using them in the classroom. After all, why assess if we don't use the information? Workshop is open to all content areas, all grade levels. Audience: Grade Levels K-6, 7-12, Teachers Presenter: Dola Deloff Registration: Mylearningplan.com - SC BOCES Web Reg. Socratic Seminar: Achieving Mastery
Through Dialog The Socratic Seminar is rooted in the teachings of Socrates who be-lieved it was more important to think than to memorize facts. During a seminar, students explore ideas and engage in conversations with others to make meaning of the issue for themselves. Used widely in humanities college courses, the Socratic Seminar is more concerned with how the students are thinking critically than if they can repeat was is said to them. Students are more involved in their own learning as they grapple with complex issues and concepts. Participants of this workshop will learn how to turn over the control of learning to their students. The So-cratic Seminar is a way of preventing teacher-center lectures and rote note taking. During the workshop, time will be given to consider how
this method can be used effectively in the participant's classroom and to develop an action plan. This workshop is designed for the first-time participant. Surveying evidence and success with inquiry based instruction in the region, a starting point for this work-shop is a real world map of progress to date. Building a common ground of understanding about inquiry from participants, a practical and authentic definition of this brain-based instructional model emerges from sharing. With the goal of understanding the nature of expert thinking and its connections to inquiry, activi-ties target uncovering problem solving and thinking skills in competent adults. Shining a light on the novice thinker and learner, a review of the neuroscience of learning reveals instructional strategies that succeed and transform.
Inquiry and brain-based learning are consolidated and applied to core competencies for the CCSS, ELA, Lit-eracy in Social Studies and Science, and the new Social Studies Frameworks. Taking Informed Action This work session will address the Taking Informed Action component of the K-12 Social Studies Inquiry Writing project to align with the NYS Social Studies Frameworks. Teachers will design experiential activities that will have students practice the arts and habits of citizen-ship collaboratively. The Think Tank will involve teachers in discus-sions around designing grade and vertically aligned activities across K-8 social studies inquiries. Teachers will create lessons that give students opportunities to engage in democratic and civic participation in public life. These can take many forms including: making collaborative deci-sions within the school or classroom; conducting community-based research; producing student journalism and media; making presentations to audiences; and simulations that will deepen students' engagement in
civic life. At all grade levels activities can prepare our students to take on the demanding responsibilities of engaged, responsible citizen-ship.
