The Government of India has declared the Canal System fromKakinada to Puducherry along with Godavari and Krishna riversystem as National Waterway w.e.f 25.11.2008. NationalWaterway No.4 is having total length of waterway Km. 1078from Kakinada to Puducherry. The length of the NW-4 inAndhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry are 888 Km, 188Km, and 2 Km respectively. The cargo identified for NW-4include Coal, Rice, Food grains, Cement, Fertilizers, ForestProducts, Salt and Other Bulk Cargo. The project will be an important component of the state logistics.As NW-4 is along the coastline it will serve the ports of the stateand reduce cargo congestion from roads and rails. The modal shiftof cargo evacuation will also reduce the average cost of evacuationas IWT is a low cost transport mode.

Brief description of the project The Government of Andhra Pradesh has planned todevelop a road with new alignment along the High
Tide Line from Ichchapuram to Tada to promoteeconomic activities along the long coast line whichthe state is endowed with. In phase I, two prioritysections i.e. Bhogapuram to Visakhapatnam (~19km) and Visakhapatnam to Addaripeta (~ 85 km)have been identified for development.
The Beach Road is expected to energize the coastalareas by providing connectivity. It is envisaged tosupport and promote many economic activities inthe Influence Zone such as industrial activities,
tourism, port related activities, marine and fisheries.
