We are seeing a LOT of tick paralysis cases rightnow.
Tick season in the Brisbane area runs roughly Juneto January. We started seeing cases on the 1st ofJune 2012 and the numbers have continued to
Welcome to Piper’s Point. Today we are going tobe talking about foods that are very dangerous forus and can make us very sick.
The main food items that are deadly for us doggysare:
ChocolateOnions and garlicMacadamia Nuts
WARNER VETWarner Village Shopping Centre353 Samsonvale Road Cnr Old North RoadWARNER, QLD 450007 3882 2288
June 2012 and the numbers have continued toescalate, particularly the last 2 weeks.
The most effective methods of tick control arefortnightly Advantix for dogs, and fortnightlyFrontline for cats and dogs. Both of these appliedfortnightly are approximately 98% effective againstparalysis ticks. Put some on now, and keep putting iton until Jan-February 2013.
You still need to check your pets every day to besure they do not have a tick hiding somewhere as2% of ticks will still get through. About 60% of tickswill be located from the shoulders forward, and 30%of tick paralysis dogs and cats will have two (2) tickson them. The head and paws are the most difficultareas to check due to the small folds of skin and tinynooks and crannies where the ticks can hide.
Note: Advantix is NOT for cats, it is toxic for cats. Forcat households the dogs and cats should all be onFrontline.
Macadamia Nuts
The other foods that you shouldn't feed us doggysinclude:
Avocado (all parts)Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pipsPotato peelings and green looking potatoes Rhubarb leaves Mouldy/spoiled foods (keep garbage lid on) Alcohol Yeast dough Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine) Hops (used in home brewing) Tomato leaves & stems (green parts) Broccoli (in large amounts) Raisins and grapes Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars Xylitol (sweetener found in sugar-free gum) Cooked Corn cobs
