Teacher Planning Day….more to come!
Hi Everybody!
Welcome to the online edition of The Wave. We will
send this parent newsletter to you every month to
keep you informed of events, celebrations, curriculum
updates, PTO activities, Extended Day & Enrichment
camp offerings, even lunch menus. Of course, if you
ever have any questions, please call our front offices
(547-3820 at PVPV; 547-8570 at Rawlings).
Pure joy is found in our classrooms, in our hallways,
and on our playgrounds. Our students’ faces are
alight with eagerness to learn. Thank you for sharing
your children with us here at PVPV/Rawlings. We
take seriously our responsibilities to educate, nurture,
and keep them safe. We love the work we do!
Parents, please join us for Open House and see the
tremendous learning going on already! Your
classroom teachers will make their presentations
from 6:30-7:00 and 7:15-7:45. You may join the
presentation that works for you, and still have time to
visit your resource teachers in their classrooms. Be
sure to stop by and see your PTO for spirit wear,
planners and membership information. They will be
stationed in the front hallways of both schools.
Grades K, 2, 4 Wed., Aug. 31st
Grades 1, 3, 5 Thurs., Sept. 1st
We would not be so successful in our work without all
of you… our parents, PTO volunteers and community
partners. Thank you all for all you do! The 2016-17
school year is off to a strong start, and our littlest sea
turtles are adapting beautifully.

Message from Your Principal
Curriculum Corner
By Lisa Brubaker, Assistant Principal
We know at PVPV/Rawlings that READERS ARE LEADERS! Please
encourage your child to take advantage of these wonderful programs:
Students can read most any book they choose—from home, from school,
from the public library—and take that book’s Accelerated Reader quiz.
The multiple-choice questions check their recall of events in the book.
Points are scored based on the difficulty level of the book and the number
of questions answered correctly. The program keeps track of every
student’s points. The best part is our semester Reading Celebration. No,
the best part is the Battle of the Books competition for grades 3-5. OK, the
really best part is when grade K-2 students accumulate 125 points and get
to be Principal for the Day!
Achieve 3000 is a computer-based reading program that reaches every
student at his or her own Lexile level. Students can access Achieve 3000
from their own laptops, iPads, classroom computers or in one of our
computer labs. Students can also access Achieve 3000 at home.
Research shows tremendous reading gains for 2nd grade students who
complete at least one activity per week, and for 3rd-5th grade students who
complete a minimum of two activities per week.
Our Kindergarten and 1st grade students can practice reading on Raz-
Kids, with hundreds of eBooks at dozens of reading levels. Every eBook is
available in online and mobile formats, and allows students to listen to
books, read at their own pace, and record themselves reading. Students
then take a corresponding eQuiz to help determine future instruction
needs. Once a child has read ten or more of the leveled eBooks and
passed each of the corresponding eQuizzes, they advance on to the next
reading level where they have access to lengthier and more difficult texts.
Of course, there’s nothing that promotes reading like you reading to your
child. Since reading is the foundation of all learning, we offer these
programs to supplement and encourage the love of reading.

All 2nd grade students are assessed each year to identify those who may be eligible for gifted services. Students at
any grade level in the St. Johns County School District are screened for gifted evaluation on a referral basis. Following
is the calendar for gifted screenings and evaluations:
1. District staff provide information to schools regarding gifted screening/evaluation process for inclusion in school
newsletters/websites …………………………………………………………………………….……………..….Summer 2016
2. Deadline to request gifted screening (submitted to school counselor)……..…Referrals may be submitted as needed.
3. Letter to parents of 2nd grade students regarding screening date to be sent home with students …………..9/30/2016
4. Screening of all 2nd grade students (coordinated by counselors and psychologists)……………….……10/10-14/2016
5. Screening of students at all other grade levels (completed by school counselors) …………………...…. as requested
6. School staff send letters to parents of 2nd grade students who qualify for further evaluation (re: screening results, to
include Parent Consent for Evaluation and Procedural Safeguards).....................……..……………………11/7-10/2016
7. School counselors complete all 2nd grade referrals and submit to school psychologists ……….………… 11/22/2016
8. Deadline for submission of private evaluations to school counselors………..no deadline, accepted throughout year
9. School counselors complete all referrals on private evaluations and submit to school psychologists…….as received
10. All second grade gifted evaluations completed ………………….…………………………………..………….2/24/2017
11. Determination of eligibility of 2nd grade evaluations completed …………………………………….…………4/11/2017
12. District staff mails letters to parents of 2nd graders (re: evaluation results)………………...……….………. 4/13/2017
13. School staff host EP meetings with parents of 2nd graders……………….……………….……4/13/2017 to 5/11/2017
Individual Screening for Gifted
Anyone, at any time, may request screening for gifted. Gifted screening is completed by the school counselor. The
Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) is used as an individual screener. Additionally, a teacher who knows the
student must complete a teacher checklist of characteristics as part of a referral. This checklist has 20 items and a
simple majority (11) must be checked. After screening and checklist are completed, the school counselor will obtain
parent consent for evaluation. Screening results, teacher checklist and consent make up the gifted referral. This is
then sent to the school psychologist for further testing using the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS) or a
similar individually administered test of cognitive ability. Students must score 130 or higher on this test (two standard
deviations above the mean (97%) or higher). (Note: Kindergarten is the earliest we can identify gifted students.)
Mass Second Grade Screening
The gifted screening that is done at 2nd grade uses the Otis Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT) and is usually
administered in October. Teachers administer this test to their whole class at the same time. Students who meet
eligibility using this screener are then referred for further individual testing by one of our school psychologists.
Checklist and consent must be gathered. (Note: This test sometimes does not identify truly gifted students and
conversely sometimes the screener sends students to further testing who do not end up scoring in the gifted range.)

Don't throw it away!!!
Ms. Scribner at PVPV would love to have any old maps and
newspapers for future art projects!
THANK YOU!
Square 1 Art is returning! Ms. Scribner and Ms. Stroer are participating in Square 1
Art again this year. Adorable works of art are being produced by your children in the
art room!
The art is sent to Square 1 where they input the design in their computers. Then
you get a catalog to see what products are available to order with your child’s own art
on it. Catalogs will arrive at school in late October, and shipments of products will
arrive at school early in December in time for holiday gifts. Be thinking of what you
could get for grandma!
More information will follow in the next Wave.
Many thanks to our Community Partners:
