PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Farewell Bryony: We officially farewelled Bryony yesterday
and our school canteen will be temporarily closed until fur-
ther notice. A canteen committee has been formed to
review the canteen services and operation. Please contact
Russell Taylor –Shaw if you would like to join this com-
mittee.
School Uniform: My sincere thanks to families who have
supported our school uniform policy and have now ensured
that your children are wearing the correct items. NB Tights
are only to be worn under kilts and not summer skorts.
School Mate app: The Department of Education has provid-
ed a new APP called Schoolmate for all families. It is free
and very easy to download from the App Store. It will pro-
vide you with the curriculum for each year level and suggest
ways you can assist your child at home in each subject area.
Wanted old Mobile Phones: We have been collecting old
phones to recycle. I plan to deliver these to the Melbourne
zoo next week and would be willing to take extra old
phones if you wish to send them in before next Friday. The
zoo raises funds to save the gorillas in their native habitat.
New Pedagogies of Deep Learning: Collaboration is an
important skill that will assist your child to learn at school.
When teachers and students work collaboratively
knowledge is shared and retained for deeper learning.
Camps, Sport & Excursion Funding
The CSEF is an annual payment to the school to be used
towards camps, sport and /or excursion expenses for
the benefit of eligible students.
*Primary school student rate: $125 per year
To be eligible for CSEF, parents or legal guardians must
hold a current Centrelink Health Care Card (HCC), Pen-
sioner Concession Card (PCC) or Veterans Affairs Gold
Card. Students must attend a registered Government or
non-government Victorian primary or secondary school
on the first day of term 2 or term 3.
CSEF Application Forms are available from the school
office. Completed forms must be returned to the
school office with a copy of Concession Card attached,
by 4pm on Thursday 25th June 2015

Dinosaur Incursion Year 2
The students in Year 2 will be having a session with Monash Science Centre on Thursday 28th May 2015. The students will examine fossil casts of dinosaur bones and discuss their structure and function.
They will make a plaster cast of a dinosaur footprint, claw or tooth.
The cost is $8 and will be taken from the excursion levy. If you have not paid the excursion levy, please send $8.00 to the office by Thursday 28th May, 2015
Canteen Committee Update
The Canteen Committee is inviting proposals for
the school canteen for our next meeting.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday 2nd June at
8.45am in the Conference Room.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear School Community Members,
Education Week Report
Last week was a fantastic week for our school community. We celebrated Education Week and held Open Days for our families and prospective families. The intention of Open Days is to celebrate our school and the wonderful place it is to come every day to learn. We are proud of our school and last week provided us with the opportunity to showcase what our school offers our students.
We had many prospective families visit Torquay College for our Open Days; we encourage our families to enrol their children as soon as possible so that we can begin strategically planning for next year.
Healthy Eating
We would like to acknowledge and congratulate our families on their efforts in ensuring that their children always have healthy snacks and lunches. It is most encouraging to be able to visit classrooms and see students eating fruit, vegies and healthy foods.
Our new canteen committee have started meeting to plan the future directions of our healthy canteen. Thank you for your patience with the closure of the canteen.
It’s not Okay to be away!
Your child’s Semester 1 report will indicate the number of days they have been absent from school. We hope the table below highlights the importance of regular attendance to school.
How many days has your child missed this semester? 0-6 This is within the normal range. The child can take advantage of the teaching and learning opportunities
available to them. 7 – 10 This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one year of school-
ing between Foundation and Year 10. 11- 20 This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss up to two years of schooling
between Foundation and Year 10.
To miss two years of school between Foundation and Year 10 places significant risk on any student. It goes without saying that regular absenteeism from school won’t do your child any favours. Allowing your child to skip days simp-ly because they “don’t feel like going to school” should not be an option.
Our school provides support and strategies for families to assist maintaining regular school attendance. We encour-age any family to contact us or their child’s teacher to discuss their child’s attendance at school. Active Travel Survey
If you are yet to complete the survey on how your children travel to school, please do so. It will go a long way to informing our future directions in the ongoing battle to ease traffic congestion and encourage active lifestyles.

HOT SHOTS TENNIS NEWS
Registering your child to ANZ Tennis Hot Shots
Our School is one of only 314 official venues of Tennis Australia’s National School Partnership Program (NSPP) in Vic-toria which means students will experience the national kids’ starter program ANZ Tennis Hot Shots in their health and physical education curriculum.
As a valued supporter of the NSPP, your child will be registered to ANZ Tennis Hot Shots and will receive a free T-shirt as well as the opportunity to enter competitions which could win them $5,000 (the Hot Shots Kid of the Year competition) or an opportunity to meet a tennis legend
(last year’s winner of the relevant competition got to meet Roger Federer). On top of that, all prep/reception students will receive a FREE racquet to take home as part of the program!
And don’t forget, the school will be supported by a $2.00 rebate back per registered student to put towards tennis equip-ment at the school ensuring the children are always able to play.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update
The year 5/6 students will be making margarita, leek & silverbeet pizza’s in their next lesson. They
will make extra margarita pizzas for sale on the dates listed below. The pizzas will be delivered to the
classroom at 1.00pm.
One slice is quite large and sufficient for lunch.
Please supply your child with fruit or a snack.

In the garden the students have been doing PH testing on the soil and discovering if our soil is alka-line, acidic or neutral.
TORQUAY COLLEGE CHOIR If you feel like sharing your love of singing and performing, please come along and join the Torquay College Choir. The choir is open for all students in years Foundation to year six. Choir is lots of fun and we believe everyone can sing in their own special way. We sing a variety of songs and we aim to perform to different audiences this year.
Choir is currently held in C5 with Ms Polwarth and Miss Rodgers on Fridays from 1.15 until 1.45. If you love singing and would like the opportunity to sing and perform with a group, then we would love to have you come along and join the choir.

FOUNDATION (PREP) DISCO YEAR 1/2 & YEAR 3/4 DISCO’S
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and
enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading
and literacy using an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning are-
as of the National Curriculum for Grades F to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework. National Simulta-
neous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book,
written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools,
childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
By facilitating National Simultaneous Storytime we aim to;
· promote the value of reading and literacy; promote the value and fun of books;
· promote an Australian writer and publisher; promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities;
· provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
