ContentsThe Chiltern Skills and Enterprise Centre is a brand new, state-of-the-art, purpose built facility based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. CSEC will be a centre of excellence for young people which will provide a vocational and enterprise curriculum, tailored to meet the needs of each individual. CSEC aims to support schools in maximising personal student success.

Young people will have the opportunity to learn through practical experiences and gain the understanding of what will be expected of them as a successful young person in employment. CSEC will develop their self-discipline, work-ethic and respect for themselves and others.

Personalised ProgramsWorking TogetherWe are working in partnership with schools, students, parents and employers to develop students as confident, articulate and capable individuals.

Working with schoolsWe are working in partnership with schools to provide both personalised and group based programmes with the wrap around care essential for individual success.We offer a totally flexible curriculum dependent on your school’s needs. This ranges from a student spending a single morning with us, to a complete weekly timetable.

Working with our studentsWe are committed to supporting you throughout your time at CSEC. We will give you the skills, knowledge and experience you will need to thrive in further study or the workplace. You will learn to be an effective communicator, a team player and have the confidence to act on your own initiative.

Working with parentsWe work with parents to ensure that your child/ward achieves their full potential. You will be updated on all areas of progress, successes, challenges and areas for improvement. Communication between CSEC and home is a vital part of our commitment to our students’ continual progress.

Working with employersWe have excellent partnerships with local businesses and a range of employers to ensure that our students gain the right skills and knowledge for today’s workplace. These strategic partnerships provide our students with opportunities to learn in a state-of-the-art environment with cutting edge technology, whilst also working in local industry.They provide mentoring, opportunities to attend workshops, gain additional industry recognised qualifications and real work experience.

CSEC provides the opportunity for young people to attend either a fully tailored timetable or opt into one or more of our vocational courses. This could take the form of a student attending for one morning a week for a term or possibly attending full-time.

We will be offering vocational options listed in the following pages.

What is Arts & CraftsJewellery, Glass and Ceramics.This course has been designed primarily for young people who may wish to explore a vocational route through the world of Art and Design. The optional units provide a choice of the central educational and vocational themes including 2D and 3D visual communication, the use of contextual references and the management and development of a personal portfolio.

What qualiffiication will I getBTEC Art and Design Certificate (Level 1 & 2)

City and Guilds Creative Techniques (Level 1)

What will I doYou will learn about Art and Design, focusing on Jewellery, Glass and Ceramics. You will learn skills and techniques. You might design and make band-rings, pendants and wrist chains. There is a wide range of units to choose from but the course will offer you a strong foundation in designer-made crafts, as well as providing an insight to developing business skills.

Where can an Art & Design qualiffiication leadThis qualification will provide a broad, solid foundation for progression to the Art and Design sector.

What is Business & EnterpriseDo you want to run your own business? Do you know what you need to do in order to achieve this dream?

What qualiffiication will I getBTEC First Certificate in Business (Level 1 & 2)

What will I doYou will gain skills in the following:

• Customer service• Marketing• Sales• Office Administration

Working both on your own and in teams, you will learn how to set up a small business, marketing and selling products made by CSEC students. You will also have the chance to work with our employer sponsors, building your self-confidence and developing your skills.

Where can a Business & Enterprise qualiffiication leadThis course will set you up on a pathway that will give you the skills you need to progress to a full-time college course or an apprenticeship. It will also prepare you to enter into employment within the following areas:

What is CateringWhether your interest is to gain the ability to cook a range of wonderful dishes for pleasure or you see yourself running or owning your own catering business or restaurant, this programme is for you.

What qualiffiication will I getCatering and Hospitality GCSE Catering Single Award (Level 1 & 2)

What will I doIn our state-of-the-art kitchens, serving your products in our contemporary café, The Space, you will understand what skills you need to be successful in this industry while gaining the ability to prepare a range of dishes.

You will be introduced to:

Students will get the opportunity to use their imagination, creativity and independence in order to develop their knowledge within Catering and Hospitality.

What is ConstructionThis course will suit students who are interested in a career within the construction industry and enjoy learning in a practical environment. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of Health and Safety issues and good working practices.

Creative MediaWhat is Creative MediaThis is a creative course based on learning a variety of digital media skills such as Video, Photography, Radio and Animation.

Digital Creator encourages learners to create real-life digital media projects that build into an innovative digital assessment e-portfolio.

This is a new and exciting way to learn how to create and share digital media such as making and editing your own films and producing podcasts.

What qualiffiication will I getBCS Digital Media (Digital Creator Level 1 & 2)

What will I doDigital Creator is the brilliant and exciting new way to learn a great range of digital media skills. It’s fun, creative and easy to learn, so power your imagination and discover:

• The concepts surrounding digital audio and how it affects what the end-user hears

• How to take and make great photographs• All about animations and how to create your

own features• How to think and talk like a film-maker• How to use cameras and make your

own films• How you can share what you have created with

others through DVDs and the internet

Where can a Creative Media qualiffiication leadThere are many exciting opportunities beyond Digital Creator. You could progress to other creative and media or ICT based subjects that may include games design, digital design, sound design or music technology.

What is HorticultureThis course is designed to provide students with the experience and knowledge to enter the Horticulture profession. The course is not simply about gardening; you should expect to experience a wide range of learning opportunities including Art and Design, Business and Sport and Leisure. Students will enjoy the practical nature of the course, which includes units in:

• Plant production and maintenance• Designing gardens and outdoor spaces

What qualiffiication will I getBTEC Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies (Level 1)*

What will I doAs well as developing practical skills, you will also focus on functional skills, such as literacy and numeracy as these are skills that employers require.

Where could a Horticulture qualiffiication leadOn successful completion of the course, students may choose to continue to study specialist areas of Horticulture or look to gain an apprenticeship within the profession.

The range of careers in Horticulture is vast. You could go into production Horticulture and consider how to supply food for our tables and the plants for our gardens or you could pursue a career in amenity horticulture, specializing in gardening and landscaping, becoming an expert in sports turf and green keeping, contributing to large construction projects or working in public parks and green spaces.

What is Motor VehicleDo you dream of working with cars? Do you enjoy fixing things? This opportunity could be for you!

The course will give you the skills you need to progress to a full-time or part-time college course, an apprenticeship or a career in the motor vehicle trade with further training.

What qualiffiication will I getABC Award in Motor Mechanics (Level 1) IMI and City and Guilds

What will I doYou can learn to work on cars and motor bikes, gaining valuable skills helping you prepare for work. You will experience the following activities:• Understand safe and legal driving• Servicing engines• Checking brakes• Changing wheels • Changing and balancing tyres• Use of the correct tools• Ensuring your personal safety in the work place• Health and Safety in the workplace

Where can a Motor Vehicle qualiffiication lead• College courses• Apprenticeships• Working in a garage• Running a garage• Specialist motor mechanics

What is a Motor Vehicle TechnicianMotor Vehicle Technicians repair and service cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches. They work on all vehicle mechanics and electrics, from engines and exhaust systems to air-conditioning and security.

The most common way to become a Motor Vehicle Technician is through an apprenticeship in Vehicle Mechanics. To get onto a scheme, you may need GCSE in Maths, English and Science. Another way is to take an automotive course at college to learn some of the skills needed for the job.

To become a Motor Vehicle Technician you will need to have strong practical skills and be good at finding faults and problem solving. You will also need to be good with people and have great customer service skills.

Our Motor Vehicle course is offered in association with SKIDZ.

What is Enrichment & EnjoymentThis course allows young people to explore personal interests in addition to, but distinct from their other subjects, allowing time for self-development and engagement.

What will I doStudents will be given the opportunity to enrol in one of the following activities:

• Jewellery making• Art & Craft• Glass making• I.T.• Sport (to take place at a local

leisure centre)• Cooking for pleasure

The purpose of the Enrichment & Enjoyment course is to have some fun alongside your main skill. This activity will be fitted into your schedule and is offered as an introduction to or a continuation of a hobby. There is no qualification attached to this subject.

Where could it leadIt will help our students develop a personal interest which they may continue throughout their adulthood.

Students are here to develop their social skills, attitudes and self-esteem; to feel included and ultimately to function better in society. Further, within the context or their circumstances, to achieve GCSE in Maths and English to the best of their ability. Our aim is to promote a life-long learning ethos and to make learning relevant to their outside life.
