Comparison of The Guardian Vs The Hindu:
A Structure Analysis Approach
Introduction:
This paper is to know what news and information is appearing in a
newspaper and in what proportions using structure analysis using
framework done by Readership Institute, Media Management Center at
Northwestern University.
For this analysis two newspapers were used:
1. The Guardian
2. The Hindu
The Guardian, formerly known as The Manchester Guardian (founded
1821), is a British national daily newspaper in the Berliner format.
The Hindu is an Indian English-language daily newspaper in the
Broadsheet format, founded and continuously published in Chennai since
1878.
Structure Analysis can help inform decisions about resource allocation.
And, if repeated at appropriate intervals, it allows you to track content
over time to measure readership-building changes that you make to
editorial content.
The Impact study's approach to understanding content and consumer
preferences is unique. Rather than asking consumers to describe what
kinds of news and information they want and how these should be
covered, the Impact study measured newspaper content, measured
consumer reaction, and then looked for significant correlations between
the two.

Interpretation:
From the above table structure of the paper differ drastically due to
choice of format and total number of page.
The Guardian use more number of color image than The Hindu, The
Guardian even used two full pages for one big picture for news
article where else we can see only full page ad in The Hindu.
More number of the black & white ads in The Hindu are due to
companies information advertisement (like Tender Notice, Job
Openings etc)
Both newspapers allow full page color ads. On average The Hindu,
prints three photos and three ads in a page, where else The
Guardian, prints no ads or one in a page and two photos in a page.

NXg 6 45-56
Interpretation:
The Hindu starts the top stories in front and then jump to specific
page for the continuation.
The newspaper comes along with two inserts, NXg about music,
movies more appeling to younger group and Metroplus, more about
lifestyle and leisure activities movie listings, TV program listings,
Crosswords and comic strips are published here.
Less importance is given to International news here compared to
The Guardian, which report for five pages and two pages dedicated
to Middle East reports.
Greater importance is given to State news followed by city or
regional news and Sports news.
Conclusion:
The Guardian has fewer pages in comparison to The Hindu this may be
due to wider magazine readers in UK and availability of magazines
