Whenitcomestosafety,theReactorProtectionSystem(RPS)isthemostimportantInstrumentationandControl(I&C)systemforourcustomers.

Underpinnedbyourpatentedandworld-leadingSpinline™technology,theRolls-RoyceSpinline™RPSgathersthefunctionalitiesoftheReactorTripsystemaswellastheEngineeringSafetyFeaturesActuationSystem(ESFAS).Itmonitorsvitalreactoroperationparametersandincaseofemergency,automaticallyshutsdownthereactoranddeterminesthecorrectiveactionstobetaken.

AllthecircuitsinvolvedincorrectingabnormalsituationsareactivatedbytheSpinline™RPSincluding:

• Emergencyshutdownofthereactorcore(whichinterruptsthenuclearfissionreactionbyloweringrodsintothereactorcore);

• Safetyinjection;

• Start-upoftheemergencyfeedwater;

• Steamlineandfeedwaterlineisolation;

• Containmentsprayingandisolation.

• Singlefailurecriterion:

– Protectionchannelredundancy:asinglefailureshouldundernocircumstancestriggeranyprotectiveactions

– Independentprotectionandmonitoringchannels;

• Testduringfullpoweroperation:periodictestingofeachprotectionchannelduringoperation;

• Protectionagainstcommoncausefailure:detectionandidentificationofeveryeventusingtwodifferentparameters(functionaldiversitycriterion);

• Continuousmonitoringtopreventsafetyactionsfrombeingbypassedandhenceprohibitedactionsfrombeingtriggered;

• Keepingthesystemsafeintheeventofafailure;

• Executionofallprotectionactionsattherighttime;
