Rebuilding Together History

• Began with small number of affiliates 30+ years ago• National Headquarters opened in 1988

• Currently the Nation’s leading home rehabilitation and community revitalization non-profit organization

• Vision• “A safe and healthy home for every person.”

• Mission• “Bringing volunteers and communities together to improve

the homes and lives of homeowners in need.”

• Who they help:• Disabled and aging• Low-income families• Veterans• Natural disaster victims

• Services are provided free of charge• General repairs• Accessibility modifications• Safety modifications• Energy efficiency modifications

When and Why?

• When do projects take place?• Rebuilding Day: first Saturday in May (2011)• Events are also scheduled throughout the calendar year

• Why?• Home ownership: Home improvement and ownership is

becoming increasingly expensive• The elderly: 80% of those 50+ own homes, and want to

age in place• The disabled: 1 in 5 Americans has a disability• Low-income families: most low-income families spend

more than half of their income on housing

How can you help?

• Build a team, support a site!• Encourage your employees to volunteer to repair a site

• Teams can be large or small groups can join existing teams

• Provide financial support• RTOC offers various sponsor levels

• Financial donations of any amount are welcome

• Seek funds or ‘matching’ programs through your corporation

• Make in-kind donations• Including building materials, appliances, cleaning supplies,

dumpsters, etc.

Creating a team

• Teams are composed of volunteers who perform both skilled and unskilled labor at various levels• Administrative • Kick-off event• Work site

• General cleaning• Landscaping• Rough and finish carpentry • Painting & masonry

• Volunteers will never be asked to perform work they are not comfortable doing

Creating a team

• RTOC is an open event!• Encourage your employees to invite spouses,

children, and friends• This is a great opportunity for a family event• Children ages 12 and up are welcome to attend

• Pick your community• Sites are located throughout most of Oakland

County

Time commitment –NOT AS MUCH AS YOU THINK

• Volunteer Training meeting• Lowe’s training classes (optional)

• Ramp building• Door framing• General home repair

• Event Day• Kick-off only• ½ day or full day shifts• 4 hours or 8 hours• AM or PM

Sponsorship

• RTOC offers sponsorship at several levels• Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Copper

• Each sponsorship level comes with a variety of benefits• Benefits range from website recognition to

luncheons and are based on the amount donated

• Event Date: Saturday, April 24, 2010• Number of Participants: 1,300• Homes & buildings rehabilitated: 38 + 1 facility• Communities Served: Farmington Hills, Southfield,

South Lyon, Lake Area, Commerce Township, and Wixom

2010 National Results

• 10,000+ houses and non-profit facilities rehabilitated

• 250,000 volunteers donated their time and skills

• Work was completed in 1,879 communities across America

Eaton Corporation’s Contribution

• Eaton began its involvement with RTOC in 2009, and has since helped to rehabilitate 3 homes

• Over 100 Eaton employees and family members have contributed time and effort

• Each year, Eaton hosts the RTOC kick-off event for the 300+ community volunteers

• Eaton Corporate has provided $30,000 in donations to RTOC

HGTV & DIY Partnership

• In November 2010, Scripps Network chose Rebuilding Together as their charity of choice

• The partnership includes a three-year commitment, and came with a $1 million cash donation as well as a commitment to provide $15 million in support and media exposure
