'A Christian school community, helping children learn and grow to achieve their potential'.
I know Nana loves her time as well and she is the
‘queen’ of cuddles, cooking, making cards, babysitting, meals, buying presents, treats and playing games.
I believe the role of grandparenting is so important to us because we both had wonderful grandparents who were pivotal in our lives growing up and our own parents were superb, generous and engaged grandparents with our children. All those generations of positive relationships are now reflected in our grandparenting.
According to Dr Karl Pillemer of Cornell University, “the relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren is second in emotional importance only to the relationship between parent and child”. A recent study by Boston College found that “an emotionally close relationship between grandparent and grandchildren is associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations”.
I realise every HCCS child is not blessed by living, engaged and ‘in close proximity’ grandparents and families do find others to provide that stability and nurture.
God bless every grandparent and grandfriend at HCCS as you seek to have a positive influence in the lives of our precious students.
Kind regards
Chris (Grandad)
Reflections on Grandparents’ Day
According to a recent survey in the US, 72% of grandparents “think being a grandparent is the single most important and satisfying thing in their life”. I must agree that the time that Julie and I have with our 8 grandchildren continues to be a highlight of our lives.
With my grandchildren I love:
Playing cards and board games, especially Crib, American Rummy and Sequence
Sharing holidays with them at Second Valley in January each year (they all come)
Listening to their successes with school, dance, sport, music, art, swimming etc
Walking in nature and asking questions about natural things
Sharing some of my faith stories and how God has been a strong part of my life for over 50 years
Affirming strengths and ‘having a go’ attitude to new opportunities
Attending sporting, music and dance celebrations
Watching them grow up and fulfill their potential eg playing in a band
Having them pick tomatoes off the bush and eating them together
Giving them arithmetic sums during meals and stories of the ‘olden days’
Observing their joy in the little routines of life
The hugs that Grandads appreciate

Prayer & Praise Points
praise God for our grandparents
praise God for the wonderful Year 7 Camp Out in the HCCS Orchard on Friday night
pray for the Year 8s as they leave for Fiji on Friday
pray for the preparations that are being made for the Year 7 trip to Canberra
pray for those who are struggling with health issues
HCCS BUS SURVEY With the busyness of school holidays and the start of term, families’ responses to our Bus Survey has been less than expected. Therefore, we have decided to extend the completion of this survey until FRIDAY, MAY 19TH.
This survey will assist the School in determining a Strategic Plan for the Transport needs of our families. If we do not get more responses, then we assume that families are happy with their existing arrangements. The survey was emailed to all families last week. We look forward to your responses.

charities and other non-profit organisations to
reduce their tax burden.

HCCS Voluntary Building Fund. This donation
of $2 or more to HCCS (a deductible gift
recipient), will be tax deductible.
The School will provide a receipt which can be used
for tax purposes and the Building Fund donation

I have always loved sleeping over at my
grandparents’ house because they make me feel so at home. All of my grandparents are
always so selfless and they cook the most
delicious meals. When I was little I remember
cooking with my Nanna and getting to do
special things. With my Grandad I loved (and
still do) having tractor rides on the farm,
feeding the sheep and picking all the
tomatoes in the vegetable garden. With my
Grandma I remember cuddling up on her lap
by the fire with their dog. My Grandpa and I
have always gone to the oval to walk the
dog, gone go-carting and sleeping in his study
with my siblings and playing in the cubby
house with my cousins. I love all my grandparents so much and I will always
remember them. Maycie Cunningham (Yr 5)
My Nana teaches me how to make birthday,
Easter and Christmas cards. My Grandpa
takes me sailing on his sailboat. In the water
we see crabs and fish and it’s really cool. My
Nana kicks the footy with me and she cooks
the best food. It is YUM!!! She gets me really
cool birthday and Christmas presents. My pop
tickles me when I’m not expecting it and he
plays golf too. Will Harvey (Yr 5)
I love spending time in my Grandma’s garden
because it’s very beautiful and it makes me
feel all happy and excited. Whenever we get
to my grandparents’ house, they will give me
a cup of tea with sugar in it and they always get the warmth of the tea just right.
Talitha Fleming (Yr 5)

I like it how my Granny buys me presents even
when it’s not my birthday or Christmas. I love it
when we go to places together and when we
make hot chocolate together. Ella Hull (Yr 5)
The best memory with my grandparents is
picking flowers from their garden. We would
pick every flower there and put them in glad
wrap and a wet tissue, then when we got
home we would give them to mum for a
present and we did it every week. I also
remember playing games like Trouble and
Snakes and Ladders. I also remember kicking
the football in the back yard but the ball
always went over the fence.
Cooper Fowlie (Yr 5)
