We are pleased to inv ite proposals for papers at the international conferenceR e l ig i o n a n d C u l t i n th e D od e c a n e se d u r i ng t h e � r st m i l l e n n i u m B Cto be held at the Universit y of the Aegean on R hodes in October 2018.
Religion has always been one of the major components of peoples’ l ives, an integral part of social, economic and political contex ts, contributing to the formation of culture and histor y. In order to study and understand the rel igious and cult practices of a particular region, it is necessar y to ex plore their various ex pressions through material culture and w ri�en sources.
�e oldest k now n cult remains in the Dodecanese can be dated to the end of the tenth and early ninth centuries B.C . and throughout the � rst mil lennium B.C . �ese display the ex istence of a v ibrant island societ y w ith various evolv ing cult practices. A s a major stopover on maritime trade routes, the southeastern Aegean was in �uenced by contacts from throughout the Greek world and beyond. � is conference w il l ex plore the archaeolog y and l iterature that testi f y to the development and continuation of cults in the Dodecanese, from the Early Iron Age through to the � rst centur y B.C .
�e conference w ill particularly welcome papers in the follow ing thematic circles:• New archaeological finds on sanctuaries and cult practices in the Dodecanese• Epigraphical and literar y evidence on the religion and cults in the Dodecanese• The context of religion and cult practice in the Dodecanese• Theoretical issues on the relation of archaeolog y, religion and cult
