1. INTRODUCTION
During the period October 4 to 9, 1985, ground magnetometer and very
low frequency (V.L.F.) E.M. surveys were completed over a group of
nine claims within Carman Township in northern Ontario.
2. LOCATION AND ACCESS
The 9 claims covered by this report are: P848485 to 848490 inclusive
and P849975 to 849977 inclusive. The claims are located
approximately 18 km southeast of the town of South Porcupine. Access
to the property is afforded by the all weather Langmuir Mine Road
from South Porcupine. This road leads to a point approximately 300
metres south of the claim group.
3. SURVEY SPECIFICATIONS
The magnetometer and V.L.F. surveys were performed along north-
northwesterly oriented grid lines spaced 100 metres apart. Station
spacings along the grid lines were 25 metres.
A Geometrics G-816 proton precession magnetometer was employed to
measure the total magnetic field with an accuracy of InT. A base
station was established and diurnal variation of the magnetic field
was monitored at this station during the course of the survey.
Corrections were applied to the readings as a function of time of
reading.
3. SURVEY SPECIFICATIONS (cont'd)
A Geonlcs EM-16 V.L.F. unit was employed to measure in-phase and
quadrature components of the vertical secondary E.M. field with an
accuracy of I K. The transmitter station used for the survey was NAA,
Cutler, Maine operating at a frequency of 24 kHz. A total of 11.25
line kilometres each of magnetometer and V.L.F. surveying was
completed over the grid.
4. DATA PRESENTATION
The magnetometer field data are presented in contoured plan form in
Map//L. A contour interval of 50 nT has been employed and a datum of
58000 nT has been subtracted from all readings. Smoothing filters
have been applied to the contours.
The V.L.F. in-phase and quadrature components are plotted in profile
form in Map#2 at a scale of l cm z 10%. In-phase and quadrature
readings are plotted to the left and right respectively, of each grid
line.
Conductor ones are indicated on both maps.
5. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
a) Magnetometer Data:
The magnetometer data are dominated by several east-northeasterly
trending elongated magnetic highs. These highs are suggested as
having mafic volcanic flows as their causative sources.
5. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS (cont'd)
Steep gradients associated with the magnetic highs would indicate
shallow depths to causative sources and, in some cases, possible
outcrop exposure.
Dislocations in the magnetic trends are noted in the western portion
of the claim group. These dislocations, along lines 400 E and 600 E,
may suggest the presence of faulting.
b) V.L.F. Data:
Numerous conductive trends have been defined by the survey. However,
only six trends (labelled A to F on Map#2) are considered as having
probable bedrock causative sources. Of these trends, only conductors
A and E display coincident magnetic expressions over portions of
their strike lengths. Magnetic sulphides are suggested as the
probable causative sources. The remaining conductive trends may have
non-magnetic sulphides or graphite as their causative sources.
A major break in conductor trends is noted along an east-west plane
extending from the southern end of Line 1550E to the northern end of
Line 600 E. This discontinuity may reflect the presence of a fault.
6. CONCLUSIONS
Six conductive trends have been defined by the surveys. Geological
mapping in the vicinity of the conductors is recommended to ascertain
the source of the responses.
Respectfully submitted
