Repositories
“greater value may be derived from programmes that focus more on
achieving strategic objectives (e.g. improving access to
resources) and less on a specific technology to meet these
objectives (e.g. repositories)”
Rachel Heery commenting on the JISC Repositories Programmes
I think teaching and learning materials haven’t been served well by
conflating discussion of them with Open Access research
outputs

“ Important needs expressed by content users include:
* Minimize number of repositories necessary to access
* …
Of these, the first bullet point clearly relates to interoperability of repositories, and indicates the importance of focusing on repository federations, including metadata harvesting and providing central indexes for searching for educational content.”

Resource discovery
“Repositories are still a major chunk of the Dark Web, that search engines cannot get to. [...]
“So resources or their metadata should be straightforwardly accessible through common protocols. “Common” means “web-wide”, not sector-specific: Google’s refusal to support OAI-PMH is a salutary lesson. Although OAI-PMH is clearly working well within the repository domain (e.g. LORN is built on OAI-PMH), it is limited to that domain: as far as Google is concerned, it is trapping repository content in the Dark Web.”

Resource management
Can you name a good example of an institutional repository making sure that high quality teaching and learning resources that have been developed at that institution are (and remain) available to all the members of that institution?

Resource management
“From the public perspective, the OpenLearn website is a repository of open educational resources (OER). [...]
“From an internal perspective though, the website is the end-point of a production process which is backed by an Enterprise Content Management system (ECM).”
“LearningSpace materials are managed through the ECM. Assets are version controlled and production tracked to ensure the correct asset is rights-cleared and deployed on the website only when ready. [...] If the substance of the material becomes out of date, the unit will be taken down and a new one released. ”

Congratulations to JorumOpen who have been in business for a whole month! In that time they have amassed 1274 educational resources under various headings, including (I'm pleased to say) an impressive amount of Computer Science. I was hopeful for the possibilities that JorumOpen offered, but sceptical that much would change. Now there is a good quantity of undergraduate level computer science - after just one month - and I am genuinely delighted.
RobbieRobSki: Via @kirkstuff - JorumOpen Repository. Content packages of resources aplenty can be previewed & downloaded. Nice! http://2f0e.sl.pt
LornaMCampbell @wilm Isn't it just the _most_ fabulous resource? I wrote a blog post on it here http://tinyurl.com/ye52pcz #ukoer 8:42 AM Feb 26th via web in reply to wilm
Mark Dransfield: I have just taken a look in JorumOpen and it looks good and v simple to use. (...) Looks like the OU have deposited a lot of their own resources in there, which is great.
Something positive to end with
