Requirement 5a: Clear a Clogged Drain or Trap

Most sink drain clogs are usually in one of two spots: the drain stopper (80%) and the drain trap (20%)

Understanding Sink Drains

Unscrew this rod holder nut to release the drain stopper (while holding the stopper or propping it open)

The drain trap serves two purposes: (1) to block sewer gas from coming up the sink, and (2) to trap heavy objects (e.g. rings, coins) that may be accidentally dropped down drain

Remember to use a bucket – the drain trap will be full of water !!

Checking the Drain TrapPlace a bucket under the drain trap to catch water insideWith pliers, remove the slip joints on both ends of the trap piecePour out the water from the trap piece and clean out with an old toothbrush or a pipe brushRe-install the slip joints making sure they are tightRun some water through the drain and check for leaks. A good trick is to lay a paper towel under the joint – this will show any slow drips.

Checking the Drain StopperRemove the rod holder nutWhile holding the drain or propping it open, pull out the pivot rod and then lift out the drain.Clean the drain stopper and check the pipe for any obstructionsReassemble the drain and test to make sure it pops up correctly
