Residents Day Workshop
For the first time, Orthomed (UK) Ltd are delighted to support an ECVS resident day
workshop on Thursday September 22nd just prior to the Advanced Neurosurgery
Course on September 23rd, 24th and 25th.
As space is limited, it is only open to 3rd year residents and participants will be chosen
from case report submissions.
The cases should be surgical and successfully treated rather than simply rare or
exotic conditions.
Rankings of submissions will be based on knowledge of the condition, case
management, follow-up, and discussion.
The top three submitters will have a daylong cadaver laboratory with the
instructors of the course.
Please submit an interesting neurosurgery case in JSAP format by August 1, 2016.
The successful residents will then be able to stay for the full duration of the course
and all we ask is that they help out in terms of set-up throughout the three days.
Flight and accommodation costs will not be covered, but all meals and evening
entertainment will be.
For further information or to submit your case, please contact Simon Porter at
[email protected] or call on +44 (0)845 0259

Advance Spinal Surgery Course and Laboratory
This three day conference will focus on advanced neurosurgical procedures of the cervical and
thoracolumbar spine. The first day will consist of lectures including instrumentation, anaesthetic
and analgesic protocols, and step-by-step, tricks and tips of five most common spinal procedures –
T-L laminectomy, cervical slot decompression, spinal fracture stabilization, atlantoaxial stabilization,
L7 – S1 decompression and stabilization. The second and third day, attendees will perform three
laboratories that encompass those surgeries. Fresh cadavers will be available for all laboratories.
Preceding each laboratory the instructors will provide demonstration on their unique methods and
techniques. The SOP™ Locking Plate will be used for stabilizations.
This is an advanced course and attendees should already have basic knowledge of these surgical
conditions, and basic surgical proficiency
Attendees are asked to bring their own scrubs and
are encouraged to bring magnifying surgical loupes

Laboratory Descriptions
Laminectomy including Corpectomy: Improved imaging, surgery site illumination, and magnification results in surgical decompression performed with more limited soft tissue approaches and greater spinal cord decompression. Hemilaminectomy of the thoracolumbar spine will be taught using high speed burrs. The techniques of decompression of Hanson Type II disks via corpectomy will be taught. Cervical Slot Decompression, Distraction and Stabilization: The procedure of ventral slot decompression will be performed on the cervical spine using high speed burrs. The cervical spine will then be distracted and stabilized using a locking screw system. Stabilization of the AA joint will also be performed. Stabilization of the T-L Spine: The techniques of fracture reduction and stabilization using pedicile screws will be taught. Emphasis will be on approach, techniques of reduction and temporary stabilization, then definitive stabilization with bilateral locking pedicile screw systems. Proper placement of implants will be stressed. L7 – S1 Decompression and Stabilization: The unique aspects of decompression of the L7 – S1 area will be demonstrated including performing a L7-S1 foraminotomy. Reduction techniques for L7 fractures will be demonstrated with stabilization using locking screws in L7 and the sacrum/ilium. Hone Skills Lab:
The attendees may repeat previous laboratories or perform the fourth laboratory

Course Venue
The Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the 80 hectare Garscube campus at the
Northwest boundary of the city, four miles from the University’s Gilmorehill campus. The School
was founded in 1862 and gained independent Faculty status in 1969. In 2010 the Faculty translated
from the ‘Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’ to the ‘School of Veterinary Medicine’ within the College
of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. The School has a 190 hectare commercial farm and
research centre at Cochno, 15 minutes from the Garcube campus (5 miles north).
The School has approximately 199 staff (academic, research and support) with an additional 65
postgraduate research students, 30 postgraduate clinical scholars and 600 undergraduate students.
The School is pre-eminent in teaching, research and clinical provision, and attracts students,
researchers and clinicians from around the world. Our internationally accredited school provides an
expert referral centre via the Small Animal Hospital, the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare and the
Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health & Welfare for animal owners and referring
practitioners throughout the UK. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, the Grade Point
Average for our research activity was the highest in Scotland and joint highest in the UK, reaffirming
our position as one of the country’s leading veterinary schools.
Following the first ever international UK accreditation visit to be undertaken conjointly between the
American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education, The Royal College of
Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education
(EAEVE) and The Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) in April 2013, the University of
Glasgow’s School of Veterinary Medicine has achieved full accreditation for a further period of
seven years.
The visit was undertaken following the protocol agreed with the International Accreditors Working
Group, with AVMA, and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council, at which EAEVE had
representatives as observers. It is anticipated that the next site visit will take place in 2020.
