Dear church family and friends,
There are still a lot of Elvis Presley fans. You might
have heard of “Elvis” [Presley] sightings, where
people claim to have seen him. Elvis’ impact is still
felt long after his death 37 years ago. Instead, I would
like to suggest that we direct our attention to other kinds of sighting…
God sightings.
People want to see and experience God. The problem is…that life
happens! Big events or worries are right on top of us. We feel these
so deeply that God can seem far away. If God seems far away, then we
are less likely to respond to Him or relate to Him. That just increases our sense of separation.
What if…God is nearer than we thought? What if…He is working and
moving, but we are not seeing it? If we see Him, then we are more
likely to respond to Him and feel closer to Him. Maybe what we need
to do is raise our awareness.
Last Sunday I began a sermon series called “Looking for God”. Each
Sunday a different way of seeing God will be explored. We began with
“Answered Prayer”. God directly answered the prayer of Abraham’s
servant (Gen. 24). Next, we will look at “Evidence of God’s Care” –
ways God has expressed His love and care. The third message will be
on the subject of “God’s Power for Service” – how God helps us to do
His work. Finally, we will explore “God’s Timing” – how God guides
our lives.
We are looking at four types of “God sightings”:
Obvious answered prayer
Unexpected signs of God’s love for me
God helps me to do His work
God’s timing
My encouragement to you is to look for God, especially these next few
weeks. These four ways will help us to see Him better. Keep a
notebook or journal. Write them down. Share them. I would love to
hear about them.
Love, Pastor Mike

LET’S HELP!!
The Department of Social Service Adult
Protection Services is In need of food
items. These items help bridge the gap
at the end of the month, when supplies run low. Need-
ed: peanut butter, saltine crackers, canned soup, tuna,
instant oatmeal, canned spaghetti with meat, macaroni &
cheese (with liquid cheese), canned meat, beef stew and
canned fruit.. You can place these items in the white
baskets in the hall.
Once food items are at the Social Service office, a bag is
filled with each of these items. The social worker keeps
some of the bags with them while out on their home
visits. If there is a need, a bag of assorted food is ready
and available to those in need.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES
We will resume our Wednesday night fellowship meal and
Bible study on August 19. Dinner begins at 6; Bible study is at
6:45; and the sanctuary choir rehearses at 7:50. There are
classes for all age groups.
“A Christian’s Guide to Social Media has been re-scheduled
to begin Oct. 21.
The studies offered this session for adults:
“Praying for Your Adult Children”
Taught by Terry Winters. Concerns for our children continue
long after children move out. Parents cannot protect children
from life. The best thing to do is to intentionally, consistently
release them into God’s loving care. This is a great time to
pray with and for one another.
“Spiritual Gifts”
Taught by Mark Clark. This important subject is greatly
misunderstood. Gain a deeper Biblical understanding to help
you see your part and how that coordinates with others in
God’s greater plan.
Exodus: “Liberated for Life in Covenant with God.”
Taught by Pastor Mike. “Exodus” is for everyone, the story of
all of us. It is the journey away from things that weigh us
down, hold us captive, and into freedom and forgiveness as
we follow God. He walks with us and supplies our need as we
face each obstacle along the way.
A preview session will be held on August 19 at 6:45. The six
week session will begin on September 2nd. Join us for this
wonderful time of midweek “refueling”!
WAR ROOM
War Room is a new full length Christian movie that will debut on
August 28. Norton Cinema is going to show the movie. I am
working with them to reserve a theater for our church on Sunday,
August 30. If you are interested in tickets for yourself,
friends, family, neighbors, please let me know ASAP. I will
have more information about the time and cost later this week and
will send that out via email and Facebook. I believe this is going to
be an awesome movie and I hope that we can fill up an entire thea-
ter! Below is a brief synopsis of the movie and you can view the
movie trailer at www.warroomthemovie.com. Blessings, Leigh
“War Room” follows Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, a middle-class
couple who appear to have it all — good jobs, a daughter and their
dream home. In reality, the Jordan marriage has become a war zone
and their daughter is collateral damage. With the help of Miss Clara,
an older, wiser woman, Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for
her family instead of against them.
From Leigh
YOUTH: We are starting our new church year.
This means Bible study on Wednesdays and Sundays!
Dinner is served at 6. Friends are always welcome!
ROCKIN’ THE SMOKIES, SEPTEMBER 5:
The cost for the trip is $45 (please give this to Leigh
by Sunday, August 23). You will also need money for
meals (lunch and dinner at Dollywood; lunch on
Sunday). We will leave at 6:30 am on the 5th and
should return before dinner on the 6th. Wear comfortable
clothes and shoes for the park. On Sunday, we will have a
time of worship, do some hiking, and possibly go to the out-
let stores (if we have time). Be sure to pack your Bible and
toiletry items. I will have permission slips available this week
for everyone to fill out.
The meeting with the FLOCK parents went very well. Parenting is never easy and it just seems to get more complicated with the rise of technology and all of the access that brings—good and bad. In our book, “More than Just The Talk”, a youth pastor is quoted: “Parenting is hard. Proactive parenting is harder. Reactive parenting is hardest”. That is so true! But, when we do the hard things first, the other things fall in to place.
I urge you to pray for our teens and especially for their parents. Do this as often as you can. Satan is lurking and he will not hesitate to devour Christian families.
I believe it is our responsibility as a “body of Christ” to be a safe haven, a refuge, for our youth and their parents. We should offer programs that interest them and that teach them about God’s love and grace; we should offer opportu-nities to serve; we should invite them to be involved in the decision making processes of the church; we should teach them to tithe and to give above and beyond of all of their gifts and talents; we should encourage and support their school activities; we should take an active interest in their lives. They are not just the future of the church; they are the church now!
I am praying for all of you this week. Pray for each other, too.
Blessings, Leigh
