REPORTS

By Chris Gregg (Year 5 team) We arrived at A.B. Paterson

College with 21 other schools to

see who the best in QLD was.

Our three teams did exceptionally

well with one of the Year 6 teams

coming 1st in two categories;

Mathematics and General Knowledge! The Year 5 team was

mentioned a couple of times in

the top schools placing 3rd in

Engineering and 4th in General

Knowledge. The other year 6

team was also mentioned a

couple of times, coming 2nd in

Creative Producers and 3rd in

Code-Breaking. Everyone thought

it was a fun day out and we are

looking forward to seeing who will

be in next year’s team! Good luck!

(Team members: Jared, Joy, Josh

S, Joshua C, Chris, Alicia, Asher and Abi)

By Annabel Lee (Year 6 A team) At the Da Vinci Decathlon last

Wednesday there were some

moments that were hard to get

through but there were moments

that I enjoyed greatly. The

categories I enjoyed most were

Art and Poetry and Code-

Breaking. For Art and Poetry our

task was to create an artwork

that represented movement and

then write a poem to match the artwork. For Code-Breaking we

were given a series of difficult

questions that required us to

break several different codes.

Overall my team won two prizes,

2nd for Creative Producers and 3rd

for Code-Breaking. (Team

members: Annabel, Carly, Jason

C, Simon, Nic, Edie, Celeste and

Alastair)

By Tiana Tong (Year 6 B team) I went to the Da Vinci Decathlon

of 2015 with my team Esther,

Grace, Tirus, Jack, Teagan,

Justin and Der-An. We competed

in ten different categories

including science, cartography and philosophy. We had to work

together to finish all the

categories in a set time. In

Creative Producers we had ten

minutes to make a 60 second

play on finding a bunyip. In

Engineering we had to make a

tower that could hold marbles

only using a small amount of

materials. We had great fun

doing all the categories, but my

personal favourites were General

Knowledge and Creative

Producers. We had an awesome day!

STEAM RESIDENTIAL Another STEAM Residential

program for girls is being run this

school holidays. STEAM

(Science, Technology,

Engineering, Arts and

Mathematics) is specifically

aimed at gifted year 5 and 6 girls.

workshops are now available at

QAGTC CHALLENGE 2015:

WORKSHOPS FOR THE GIFTED Challenge 2015 is an exciting

two-day program of challenging

activities designed for students

from Prep to Year 7 who are

seeking extension beyond the

regular school curriculum. The

workshops will be held at

Anglican Church Grammar School over two days of the

school holidays; Tuesday 30 June

and Wednesday 1 July. More

information on the program and

how to register can be found at

Library News Book Returns for End of Term All library resources are due to be

returned before the holidays.

Could you please assist your

child/ren in returning their books

by Monday 22 June so that they

can be scanned and shelved.

Home readers must be returned,

as well as general library books.

Please look out for notes being

sent home from the library this

week listing any outstanding

loans that need to be returned.

Readers Cup Well done to our Readers Cup

team. Gabrielle, Holly, Ashlyn

and Helen performed well in a

field of 27 school from the

Brisbane South area as they

competed at Algester State School

on Thursday. The girls met

author David Cox, who presented

a great speech about his writing

and illustrating processes.

Congratulations girls!

Help with Covering We currently have a huge

number of new books that require

covering. We would appreciate

the assistance of any volunteers

to help get these covered before

the holidays so that they are

ready for our students to borrow

immediately in term 3. It’s not a hard job, just time consuming!

Due to the quality of the

materials we use, it is a LOT

easier than covering student

exercise books. If you can spare

any time in week 10, please drop

in to the library and cover a few

books. Training, tea and coffee

are provided, and younger

children are welcome to join you.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge

has commenced. Students will receive a reading log before the

holidays. These are due to be

returned to the library by Friday

28 August.

‘The Premier's Reading Challenge

(PRC) is an annual statewide

initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated

students up to Year 9, and

children attending an approved

kindergarten program or long day

care centre. Over the past ten

years, more than 10 million

books have been read, and in

2014 alone over 108,000

students participated in the

challenge. The challenge is not a

competition but aims to improve

literacy and encourage children

to read widely for pleasure and

learning.

To successfully complete the

PRC, students must read or

experience the number of books

indicated in the table below. The

requirement for Year 5 through to

Year 9 students to read 15 books

acknowledges that older students

are likely to select longer, more

complex books that may take

them longer to read. Students

who complete the challenge have

their efforts recognised through

the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the

Premier of Queensland.’

The following activities can be

counted towards the challenge:

reading independently

shared reading

being read to (Prep – Year 2

only).

The following literature forms can

be counted towards the

challenge:

printed books

e-books, virtual books and

digital publications

graphic novels and comic

books

audio and braille books

newspapers, magazines and

recipe books

P & C News P&C UPDATE Congratulations to the School for

a great Evening of Excellence. It

was very interesting to learn

about some of the history of the

School and the P&C. The P&C

raised some vital funds to put

towards air-conditioning the

Music Room thanks to some

dedicated helpers and chef Gary

(Mr W) who did a great job on the

school’s new BBQ. Don’t forget to

send gold-coin donations with

your children on free-dress days.

These days have been very successful so far and help us

raise the funds we need to

complete projects that benefit all

children at Robertson State

School.

The P&C executive are meeting

this week to ensure that from an

organisational perspective, the

P&C is running smoothly. We’ll

be reporting any actions from

that meeting at the next P&C

meeting.

We’re also rebuilding the P&C

website. The old website will be

replaced very soon with a new,

fresh website that’s easy for us to

maintain and easy for parents to

navigate.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS Help the P&C raise enough

money to air-condition the music

room. For every Entertainment

Book or Digital Membership sold

through the P&C, we get to keep

$13. For $65 you can save lots more money throughout the year

by buying Woolworths and David

Jones e-gift cards at a discount,

through the MyBookings website

which guarantees the lowest

accommodation prices at over

1700 hotels and through the

hundreds of 2 for 1 and discount

vouchers at cafes, restaurants,

take away venues and other

entertainment places. We saved

$65 in just two weeks. Order at

www.entbook.com.au/222h379 or contact

sales.

NEXT MEETING The next meeting will take place

on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 from

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AGENDA

Fast for Word

Lee

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY

Da Vinci Decathlon

By Chris G (year 5 team) - 我們到達A.B. Paterson

Jared, Joy, Josh S, Joshua C, Chris, Alicia, Asher and Abi)

By Annabel L (year 6 A team)

Annabel, Carly, Jason C, Simon, Nic, Edie, Celeste and

Alastair)

By Tiana T (year 6 B team) – 我的團隊成員有:Esther, Grace, Tirus, Jack, Teagan, Justin and Der-

An。
