May 2012 Norma Madayag-Reilly, District Governor Issue 11
Rotary International - District 7120
It is hard to believe that the
eleventh month of the 2011
-2012 Rotary Year is upon
us. Clubs are working on
their goals; completing
their service projects for
the year and continuing
their efforts in recruiting
more members. May is
undoubtedly a busy month.
For my Executive
Administrative Assistant
Gary and me, the month of
May began with great
Rotary moments. On May 3rd, Gary and I joined a group of
Fairport Rotary Club members at the Rochester International
Airport to welcome the Inbound Group Study Exchange
Team members from District 3790 of Northern Philippines.
The GSE team is composed of 4 members (3 young ladies
and one young gentleman) accompanied by their Rotarian
Team Leader Eric Rodriguez. Fairport Rotary Club is the
first host club for the Team. Welcome District 3790 GSE
Team!
On the 4th, accompanied by their hosts, the Team attended
Cinco de Mayo event. They were introduced to a few new
experiences: the concept of an auction; a motion-activated
candy dispenser, Mexican food and much more. Fun was
had by all!
The Outbound GSE Team was led by Team Leader Tim
King, Assistant Governor of Area 12. I would like to thank
him for his leadership and support for the Team. I am also
glad that Rotary afforded the opportunity to the 5 Team
members from our District. They learned Philippine culture
and had witnessed life in a developing country. To the Team
members, I would like to thank them for participating in the
Rotary’s GSE Program.
On May 4th, Gary and I had the honor and pleasure of
joining the Webster Rotary Club during its Welcome
Celebration for the recipients of their “Adopt-A-Platoon”
project. Five servicemen came, escorted by the Webster
Police and the Fire Departments. While the Webster Rotary
Club members thanked them for their services to our
country, these young men expressed their gratitude to the
Rotarians and their families for their gifts, in the form of
candies, personal items, etc. but most of all, the
thoughtfulness and appreciation demonstrated by these
Rotarians throughout the year. The celebration was such a
touching moment for everyone! Thank you servicemen for
fighting for our freedom!
The District Assembly was a great success! Thank you to
the Canandaigua Rotary Club for a job well done! With the
high number of attendees, we are assured that our Clubs
will have strong leadership. And with DGE Gaven’s
direction, our District will have a great 2012-2013 Rotary
Year!
Congratulations to Elmira Heights and Horseheads Rotary
Club on the 85th anniversary of their Club charter. Both
Rotary Clubs jointly celebrated their anniversaries. It was
impressive to hear of all the two Clubs accomplishments
over the 85 years. I wish them another wonderful 85 years
of service, fun and fellowship!
Our “Meet me Halfway” campaign that is spearheaded by
PDG Don Alhart, Director of Annual Giving is getting an
overwhelming response. This campaign started on April 15
and ends on May 15, 2012. Matching PHF points are
available for contributions in the increments of $100.00.
Our District will benefit from these contributions three
years from now. Only contributions to Annual Funds-
SHARE are eligible for matching. DRFC Jeff Krans and I
will announce the amount raised through this campaign at
the District Conference on Sunday morning at the
Foundation Breakfast. Thank you to all those who have
already contributed to the Foundation through the Meet-Me-
Halfway” campaign!
The District is bracing for the start of the “new”
Foundation. By now, most of us have heard or read about
Future Vision. What is it exactly? Simply, it is a new way of
doing Foundation business…of conducting and managing
service projects that use Foundation dollars. Those
attending the 2012 District Conference will have a chance
to hear more about Future Vision or new changes in Rotary
at one of the Breakout sessions. DRFC Jeff Krans is going
to facilitate this session.
Mark your calendars for the District Change-Over & Dinner
which will be held on June 20, 2012 at Inn on the Lake in
Canandaigua. Send in your reservations now. Let’s all get-
together and welcome DGE Gaven and his District
Leadership Team.

Markham Honored for Meritorious Service
as Bath Rotarian
In recognition of his 42 years of outstanding service to
Rotary, Ted Markham was awarded honorary membership
May 10, 2012 by the Bath Rotary Club. At its weekly
luncheon meeting on this date Markham was presented a
Rotary spinning, weather station clock inscribed with the
words: Presented to Ted Markham by the Bath Rotary Club
upon his designation as an honorary member following his
many years of active service.
Ted Markham - continued:
Since his induction into the local club in August 1970,
Markham served on many committees and projects,
maintained perfect attendance for more than 25 years, and
held several offices, including that of club president in 1981.
In 1995 he received Rotary’s coveted Paul Harris Award.
In recognition of his service and contributions to the entire
community and Steuben County, Markham was inducted
into the Steuben County Hall of Fame in 2005. Markham
received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1946 and Master
of Science degree in 1971, both from Cornell University.
He spent three years during WWII in the Army Air Force
and another 18 years in the Reserves. In 1946 he began
working for Cooperative Extension programs in Wyoming
County. Fortunately for Steuben County, he moved to Bath
and became a county agricultural agent for the Cooperative
Extension Programs in 1957, a position which he held until
his retirement in 1976. Numerous agricultural education
programs were led by Markham during his tenure.
Markham worked with Dr. Konstantine Frank to bring the
culture of European grape varieties to New York State. The
area’s successful production of fine European-type wines
grown locally initiated a business of major economic
importance to the Finger Lakes. Over the years many of the
local vintners have turned to Markham for advice and
assistance.
During his professional career, Markham worked closely
with other agriculture agencies, including the Steuben
County Soil and Water Conservation District, the New York
State Bureau of Plant Industry, the USDA APHIS, and the
Farm Credit Agency, dealing with local issues.
As a 1963 founder and administrator of Mossy Bank Nature
Center, he worked to provide a site for recreational and
nature activities. In 2007, the park was renamed the Ted
Markham Nature Center to honor him for his years of effort,
vision, and dedication to the center.
In addition, the Village of Bath has benefited from his
various interests, including serving on the Bath Shade Tree
Committee since its inception in 1963, establishing his
Christmas tree plantation which offered summer
employment to several students, and assisting activities of
the Future Farmers of America and 4-H Clubs in the area.
Ted Markham, accompanied by his wife Peg (standing left) receives honorary membership in the Bath Rotary Club and a gift of a Rotary
spinning, weather station clock presented by the local club president,
Robin Lattimer (standing right).
DG Norma’s message (continued):
Have you heard what the Rhinos have offered the Rotary
Clubs of our District? For every ticket purchased by the
Club for the June 30, 2012 game, $5.00 is given back to that
Club. Encourage your members to go watch the game and
raise some funds for your Club projects. Likewise, the Red
Wings is also donating $1.00 to the District Literacy
Committee for every ticket purchased or sold by the Rotary
Clubs in the District for the August 18, 2012 game. Have
fun and raise funds.
Lastly, the Newark Rotary Club, through the leadership of
Conference Committee Chairperson Scott Healy, continues
working on the conference details. It will be a wonderful
and fun-filled District Conference. Looking forward to
seeing you on May 18-20, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel
here in Rochester.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee
END OF YEAR PROJECTS AVAILABLE
The District Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH)
Committee has been working all year to identify and analyze
various small projects that one or more clubs could sponsor,
without going through the matching grant process. With the
fiscal year coming to a close at the end of June, we can offer
several options if your club has uncommitted funds that
need to be spent and if you are interested in international
projects.
Chiapas, Mexico: Water disinfection system to serve
approximately 500 people and provide clean, affordable
water for a small community. Total cost: $6000. A club can
fund individual components of the system, ranging from
$100 for testing kits to $435 for an emergency generator.
Rima,Tibet: A water well and purification system is
desperately needed in a community with a long term
medical clinic project previously partially funded by a
Rotary matching grant. Doctors bring water from a nearby
lake, contaminated by grazing yaks. The total cost is $3,300,
with smaller components available from $200 for the well
pump to $1000 for drilling.
Dominican Republic: Bio-sand filters to purify the water
in individual homes. Healthy children in one household
make neighbors realize the importance of clean water for
their own home. $30 each (for installation and training),
with over 25,000 installed so far in the DR. The current
request of $2,850 from the DGE for the Dominican Republic
would serve 95 families.
Dominican Republic: The Club Rotario Santiago Monu-
mental wants to install 150 latrines in poor communities on
the outskirts of Santiago with accompanying education.
Under a project of this size each latrine costs $300, with
labor and some materials provided by the community.
The committee is hopeful that clubs will see this as an
opportunity to partner with other clubs to bring clean water
to these communities. These projects are ready to go, and
would be completed in 2012 if enough funds are committed.
PROCESS: Additional details on these projects and their
line item budgets are available through the link to WaSH:
District 7120 web site, Click on Foundation at the top, then
District Foundation Committees, then Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene Committee, or
http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/SitePages/SitePage.aspx?
accountid=50098&pid=68944. Pick something that fits your
budget and get in touch with us!!
A letter of Intent with the amount your club would like to
contribute should be emailed to the Committee at
[email protected]. When sufficient funds are
committed, the club will be notified and checks sent to a
Rotary Treasurer and forwarded to the project. Look for our
display at the District Conference!
DG Norma receives an information flyer on the District Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee from Committee chair Paul Minor. These flyers
have been distributed to clubs by committee members Gary Francis and
Jamie Tyrell when they make educational presentations in the first year of this new District Committee.

Salvation Army. Major Kathy Purvis holds a BS in
Elementary Education, has served the Salvation Army for

Recognition
Pictured above is Penfield’s club president Charlie Bellomo
(second row, far left) with 12 honorees of Penfield Rotary’s
first Service-Above-Self Recognition Luncheon, held on
April 24th. Businesses and organizations that service the
Penfield Community were invited to honor one person in
their firm who provides extraordinary customer
service. Twelve companies responded and bought 66
additional luncheon seats to recognize their 12
honorees. 105 persons attended that luncheon event
including 27 Rotarians and spouses. A key to the
luncheon’s success were sponsorships by both Paychex and
Fairport Savings Bank to pick up the costs of the plaques for
each honoree plus their lunches. The idea for the event was
built upon Penn Yan Rotary’s Service-Above-Self Dinner
held last October 2011.
Major Kathy Purvis, center, Elmira Rotary Club's newest
member, is flanked by her sponsors, Carol and Ed Lincoln.
Marguerite Kellogg, a senior at
Watkins Glen High School, was named
Watkins-Montour Rotary Student-of-the
-Month for Watkins Glen for April.
Marguerite is a member of Interact and

worker” behind the “Save our Schools”
campaign. Marguerite is also a
swimmer, a singer / dancer /actor, a
member of Select Chorus, active in her
church, and works on her family farm.
In accepting the award, Marguerite said that performing has led
her to the decision to pursue musical theater in college—
serving others through theater. “Theater can teach us a lot
about different aspects of life,” Marguerite said.
She plans to attend Kent State to double-major in Musical
Theater and Physics, with a concentration in Chemistry.
Watkins-Montour Rotary Names Students of the Month

The Honeoye Falls-Mendon Club awarded a Paul Harris
Fellowship to Katie Boyce (center) for her continuous

members. It’s a well-deserved award, that her parents,
Shelly Boyce (HF-M Rotarian - left) and Karla Boyce
(Monroe County Legislator - right), can certainly attest to
and be very proud of.
