Nigeria : The percentage of studentsn Nigeria who score h igh enough onheir exams at the enc of secondarychool to qualify for universitydmission has been steadilyeclining. to encourage academicxcellence and foster healthyompetition, the Rotary Club of Portarcourt hosted a quiz tournament
or 12 local schools in honor of Vocational Service Month. The club
onated dictionarieis to the 200udents and teachers who attended
he event, working throughistionary 4 Life, a project of theotary Club of Tooting, England, andotary International in Great Britainnd Ireland.
ormer Yugoslav Republic ofMacedonia : On September 5, 2009,
a sightseeing boat sank in Lake Ohrid,killing 15 of the 50 Bulgarian touristson board. The Rotary clubs of Ohrid,FYROM, and Pirdop, Bulgaria,located in the town where many of the victims lived, raised funds for amemorial in the city of Ohrid andorganized a trip there in September2010 for its ofcial unveiling.Families of the victims, survivors of the accident and and Rotarians from
both Ohrid and Pirdop attended theceremony. Pirdob club members havealso lent support to victims relativesand to surviviors.
Malaysia : One-third of boys andmore than 1-quarter of girls inMalaysia are not enrolled insecondary school. In November 2009,the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara
Sunrise launced an initiative to helpat-risk students stay in school. Itsapproach includes mentoring,nancial assistance, leadershiptraining, and values education. Sincethe start of the program, the club assupported 17 students with the helpof sponsors from New Zealand,Singapore, and Taiwan. It has alsotrianed 38 mentors and held severalworkshops.
USA : To celebrate its centennial thisyear, the Rotary Club of Denverdecided to work with HistoryColorado, which operates 12museums and historical sites aroundthe state, to set up an Internet-basedsystem linking the satellite sites to theorganizations main facility, theColorado History Museum in Denver.

Albert Alley, of the Rotary Club of Lebanon, PA., USA, and veterinarianWilliam Ebinger, of the Rotary Club of Rochester, Mich., along with ErmaZimmerman, a nurse, and Franck
Johannesen, an optician. Theorganizaiton, which works in 25countries, has been operating in theDomincan Republic since 1993.Working with the Rotary clubs of Nagua and Salcedo, volunteers on thegroups annual missions removecataracts and perform surgeries onchildren with crossed eyes. The nexttrip is scheduled for December.
Australia : In March, the RotaryClub of Southbank scored in helpingthe homeless through sports. Since2008, when Australia hosted theHomeless World Cup, the club hasrun an annual Street Soccer trainingcamp and competition nals. Inpartnership with the Big Issue, anorganization that works with thehomeless, the club brings players
from all over the state of Victoria tothe weekend camp. Rotarianvolunteers help with activities and build friendships with the players.
Canada : The historic shing villagof Steveston, B.C., located at themouth of the Fraser River, is home toCanadas largest commercial shing
eet and has been called the SalmonCapital of the World. To honor thisheritage, the Rotary Club of Steveston-Richmond installed banners along the main streets thatdepict a shing scene and feature theclubs name and website. Clubmembers, styling themselves as theRotary Club of Steveston Pirates, alsomake an annual appearance in theSteveston Salmon Festival Parade.
