Dear Parishioners,
The readings for today address sickness and death. The first reading speaks of death entering the
world at the hand of the devil, and the Gospel includes a dying girl and an ill woman. Sickness and
death are a part of life here on earth, but sickness and death do not have to have the last word. God
made us that we may have spiritual life if we participate in His life, death, and resurrection. Jesus
Christ came so that we might have life and have it abundantly, but there have been people through-
out the ages who have chosen not to participate in Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. There are
many paths and roads that can lead us astray from the path that God has set for us. Jesus has
opened the gates of Paradise and Heaven to us, if only we choose to follow Him through the gates, by
following Him with our hearts and actions.
This week, we are thankful for our country as we celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and we ask
that God will always protect us in the freedoms that we enjoy.
Have a wonderful, safe, and blessed Independence Day this week! God bless you.

Saint Joseph’s Catholic School
What Saint Pope John Paul II says about a Catholic Education “Community is at the heart of all Catholic education, not simply as a concept to be taught, but as a reality to be lived. …Your
students will learn to appreciate the value of community as they experience love, trust, and loyalty in your school and educa-
tional programs, and as they learn to treat all persons as brothers and sisters created by God and redeemed by Christ.” ~ Saint Pope John Paul II
At St. Joseph’s Catholic School we are a community of teachers, staff, and parents who believe
in developing the spirit and the intellect of our students. We welcome all students, Catholic or
other Faith, who want an academically challenging education in an environment of love, trust,
and respect. At SJS, we educate the spirit of every child as well as their mind! With our philos-
ophy of educating the “whole” child, our students learn courtesy, respect, and responsibility in
addition to academics. Your child will be in an environment that is both nurturing and struc-
tured, and where academic achievements are valued and expected! Through the integration of
faith, family, culture and education, St. Joseph’s Catholic School prepares our students to
participate as active members of the Church and society. Summer tours are available by
contacting Debra Harrison, director of admissions, at [email protected] or
742.0636. You can also visit our website at www.sjsmacon.org.

Clean Cupboards Clean Hearts
The Clean Cupboards/Clean Hearts ministry at St Joseph’s
Church assists the St Vincent DePaul/St Peter Claver Church
Food Pantry by providing foods for distribution. Please place
your donations in the marked boxes in the church on
today. The pantry has had wonderful generous donations this
year but the need is very great this summer. We would like to
continue providing the same quality and quantity of food for
those we serve and really need your help. Canned soups,
boxed pasta, sauces, canned fruits and cereals are especially
needed this month. There are always requests for cream corn,
and canned peaches. Please be mindful that all items are
factory sealed and are within the “used by” date.
Thank you to the many of you who generously support this
ministry. Your contributions have made a difference in the
lives of so many. May God bless you and your family. “For it is in giving that we receive” St. Francis Assisi

Mass Etiquette And Dress
With the arrival of summer, please remember to dress modest-
ly for Mass. If we were invited to a gala event, we wouldn’t
dress as though we were going to the beach. Christ Himself has
invited us to partake in the sacred banquet of the Eucharist.
Our attire and our reverent actions should reflect where we are
and Whose we are. Dressing extremely informally or revealing
is distracting and disrespectful. Dressing up for Mass is
certainly not “out of date.” Parents should also monitor their
children’s dress for Mass. Always remember to be clean, neat,
and modest when attending Mass.
A Call To Diaconate
Do you think that God is calling you…or maybe someone you
know…to serve our parish community as an ordained deacon?
Are you a man between 35 and 60? If so, and you are Catholic
in full communion with the church, with no more than one
prior marriage… you may want to learn more about becoming
a deacon. Some of the ways deacons serve are to perform
baptisms, marriages and funeral services, assist at Mass and
preach, plan liturgical celebrations and teach RCIA. Deacons
visit the sick, hospitalized and dying; some serve in prison
ministry, and in the social services ministries (e.g., homeless
or those with addiction.) Some deacons work in parish
administration. The Office of the Permanent Diaconate is
accepting applications for the next diaconate formation class
which will begin September 2019. Applications will be accept-
ed until September 30, 2018. All application materials are on
the Diocese of Savannah website, under the link for the
Permanent Diaconate office.
http://diosav.org/permanent-diaconate-Formation
Our parish priests or deacons (Don Coates and Tom Eden)
would be happy to meet with you and discuss “your call to
diaconate”.
The bulletin deadline is 10 days prior to the date you need your article to appear. All items received after
the deadline will go into the next bulletin. Submissions should be emailed to: [email protected].
