December 15, 2019 Third Sunday of Advent
From the desk of Father Omar . . . For centuries the Church has called the Third Sun-day of Advent “Gaudete” Sunday. Gau-dete means Rejoice! The tradi!ons surrounding this Sunday go back as far as the fourth or fi#h cen-tury, as does the season of Advent itself. Advent,
our prepara!on for Christmas, was originally a forty-day peniten!al season like Lent. On Gaudete Sunday, the season of Advent shi#s its focus. For the first two weeks of Advent, the focus can be summed up in the phrase, “The Lord is coming.” But beginning with Gaudete Sunday, the summary might be, “The Lord is near.” That is why –the Liturgy of the Mass- is filled with a sense of joyous an!cipa!on. On this day, we light the third candle of the Advent wreath, which is rose (or pink, if you so prefer). Those of us who have been faithful to The Lord must “Rejoice” For the God who loves us is s!ll in charge and that we await his coming not with fear, but with tremendous joy. Blessing, Father Omar
