6ANSWER THE QUESTIONS TO FORM AN EFFECTIVE HYPOTHESIS
1. What triggered the idea?
2. What are the problems with the current method?*• Collaboratively write a concise problem statement so everyone is on the same page• Strive for shared understanding
3. Is the problem worth solving?• Why would someone use your product?
4. What are unique, potential solutions to the problem?*• These are your hypotheses• Brainstorm 1-3
*background research is extremely important in order to adequately answer these questions

HOW ARE WE MEASURING & WITH WHO
Sample research methods The “who”
1. Demographics• simplified depending on product
2. User interviews• careful of leading & double-barreled questions• can be coded as quantitative data
3. Surveys• in person• online (ex. mechanical turk)
4. User personas & goals• based off of background research & interviews
1. The participants• break down the demographics• are they a certain niche?
2. Procedures• what did you do?
3. Sample methods• give examples of each research method used• should include photos or visuals

WHAT WAS FOUND?
Break down each method Relate results back to hypothesis
1. Use charts & visuals to convey data• caution: pie charts can be ineffective in shared understanding
2. Use statistical analysis• is there significance?• SPSS software or excel
1. Restate the hypothesis
2. Explain the significance• “results indicated that participants were
significantly more likely to do X”
3. This will be short• don’t go in depth in explaining the results, simply
state them and provide visual backupThe main effect revealed significant differences between the mortality salience and the control condition; t(179) = 23.67. p < .001 with equal variance assumed. These results indicate that participants who viewed the anti-obesity PSAs before taking the DTA measure were significantly more likely to fill in the word completions with death-related words.

WHAT DOES ALL THE DATA MEAN?
1. What are the relationships?• This is where you explain, in-depth what the results mean• Dive deep into analysis - what does this suggest?
2. What does the evidence support or disprove?• Were you hypotheses supported? Or did you find different answers?
3. What are the implications?• What will you take from the research?• How will you apply it to your product/design?
4. What are the future steps?• What further research can be done?
