DINGSCRUSADERS RFC

Hello Again

Today we welcome Clifton RFC to Lockleaze for our secondgame of the season and hope all enjoy the predicted sunshineand good company.

With both sides losing their first games of the season, bothteams will be eager to get their respective season rolling, letshope that’s it is as good as past matches have been, althoughperhaps not quite so tight, with I think less than a point betweenthem being the normal outcome.

Last weeks game was a strange affair, 4 Yellow Cards to the Dings and 3 toSouthend meant that the first half never really allowed the Dings side to gel andbring in the plays that were so evident in the pre-season games. Never an easyplace to visit, Southend held the upper hand until the second half, where we thentook charge, and apart from one lapse could have come away with the spoils. Alas,as so often was the case in previous way games it was not to be. But the signswere very encouraging with all the new lads making their debuts giving solid performances, onwards and upwards!

The summer break has allowed us to finalise the first stage of what we hope willbe a very productive partnership with Barratt Homes, and we thank them for theircontribution in becoming Dings Crusaders main sponsor. Let’s hope it’s a shortdeal, to some of you that might not make sense, but the shorter the deal, meansthat we will be making tremendous strides forward in securing our long term future.Let’s hope Mr Hawkins who is here today will be as full of enthusiasm.

Substantial works have been carried out over the summer to the ground, but I’llleave that for you to look around and try and find the evidence, it’s a sort of where’sWally contest, with the winner naming all 6 improvements, winning a free pint ofDoom Bar.

So back to today, I’m sure Darren will want to leave Lockleaze with all the pointsand a beaming smile, so let’s hope the boys in blue & black can step up to whatis always a stern challenge. I know this current team is as keen as ever to put upa strong challenge to all the high flying teams and keen to collect some notablescalps on the way.

So back to today, sun cream on or perhaps an umbrella, we hope it’s a great game.

Come on you Dings Boys!

Dings Crusaders RFC 2011 - 2012 Season Review

A good pre-season, some very good experienced signings and a very good crop of youngsters

led us to believe that despite a dire end to last season (one win from fourteen games) a good

top half finish was the least we could expect from the coming season, things panned out

very different.

An early start, the last week in August saw us lose a well contested close match at Taunton

and when we followed up with a very unlucky one point home loss to a shaky drop goal, last

kick of the match, to eventual champions Old Albanians we felt we were in pretty good shape.

Next up a local derby at Clifton, another tight loss and the third losing bonus point on the trot.

This was followed by four more losses, Redruth at home a close first half but two yellow cards

within two minutes of the restart saw them accumulate nineteen with the two man advantage,

Westcombe Park away a very poor performance, Shelford at home saw more yellow cards

and us squander a 20-6 halftime lead and finally a hammering at Worthing. Seven games in,

seven losses, four points, bottom of the table and a scrap on our hands to avoid relegation.

Our first win came the second week in October at home to Launceston and we felt we had

possibly turned the corner when this was followed by a very good away win at Southend but

the optimism was short lived when despite some good performances away to Hartpury and

home to Richmond in particular we had five more losses on the bounce to take us into

December with just fifteen points from the first half of the season.

With the return of a few experienced players the second half of the season was much more in

line with our pre-season optimism, the World Cup, injuries and non availabilities had possibly

forced us into using too many youngsters.

December and January saw four wins and four defeats including revenge over neighbours

Clifton and high flying Worthing, and with one of the four defeats an unlucky reverse at

Redruth when a sixth minute injury time disputed try and conversion from the home side saw

them home by a single point.

February and March saw us complete the double over Southend and gain revenge over a

very good Henley side but with survival well in our sites an inexplicably poor performance at

Lydney, one of our perceived rivals for relegation, we were plunged right back in the mire.

So we came to April, three games to play and relegation still a real possibility, fellow strugglers

Barnes at home won 31-17, fellow strugglers Hertford away won a fiercely contested battle

25-17 and Taunton at home won 39-18. A magnificent effort and a great way to finish the

season, fourteen points from a possible fifteen in April and relegation easily avoided to ensure

another season, our tenth, in National League Two.

Welcome to Clifton RFC

We extend a warm welcome this afternoon to our visitors Clifton and hope that all players,

officials and supporters enjoy their visit to our Lockleaze ground.

Clifton finished a good mid table last season with twelve wins just one more than ourselves but

on sixty six points eleven above us. Rumors that they may struggle this season were somewhat

disproved last week when they lost a tight game (10-16) at home to one of the title favorites this

season Hartpury.

Whilst it will take a month or so to sort out the relative strengths of the sides there were a few

surprising results in the first week. Newcomers Bournemouth hammered Canterbury underlining

suspicions that maybe the National Three South West league is now a good bit stronger than

their London counterparts. Lydney who were the poorest side we played last season thumped

relegated Barking suggesting they may be struggling and the other new boys Chinnor saw off

Launceston in Cornwall which is never easy, as I said the next few weeks will reveal more but

so far well done to the south west new boys.

Over recent years this fixture has produced some fine tough well-contested battles with the

result invariably within a single score and the winners in doubt until the final whistle, I am sure

this afternoon will be no different.

Good luck to both sides, may the best team win and all spectators committed or neutral enjoy

entertaining afternoon’s rugby.

Top Touch OracleSo here we again, a lousy summer, and then

September and the rugby season starts and

temperatures soar.

Well we nearly did it last week down in

‘Sowfend’, but that late interception did for

us. I was surprised when watching the

Paralympics this week, and was shocked to

hear the announcer announce that the next

race in the pool, was for swimmers in the

Essex category. Now I realise they are not

the brightest folk but I thought that was going

too far, however my mind was put to rest

when the wording came up on the screen

and I noticed it was S X. Never mind today

we have the classic opportunity to really get

the season underway, as we welcome our

old friends from the shopping mall at Cribbs.

It is good to see the side is a mix of last

season’s players and old friends returning,

I was stunned to see the Post had a scoop

with the news that we had captured the

services of that great country and western

singer Waylon Jennings, the half time

entertainment should be worth listening to!

I have been doing much study this summer.

The inevitable law changes needed to be

looked at closely to allow proper informed

criticism of the referee. All seemed fine,

except for the alteration to law 4, regarding

clothing. GPS chips may now be sewn into

the shirts or shorts. I recognise that most

players have had intuition and flair coached

out of them, but surely they know where they

are. I did, I was always offside. Perhaps it is

to keep track of the bounty hunters as they

flit from monied club to monied club. If we

had to wear them, when we went into

town after the game, now that would have

made sense.

I was down in Cornwall last week, and the

two local clubs are once again talking up

their chances. Redruth particularly are

looking forward to our whole hearted support,

and are currently recruiting a referee and two

touch judges to ensure we go home empty

handed.

All of our fixtures will again present a challenge

in one way or another, with early starts and

long journeys, but on the other hand who

wants to travel to Dings on a January or

February afternoon.

Last season we reserved some of the best

rugby we have played for the end of the

season. Certainly one or two of the tries we

scored would have graced any international

fixture and remember our lads play for the

love of the game too. However our opponents

also played some outstanding rugby on

occasions and despite wanting to win all of

our games we must give credit where it is

due, albeit grudgingly.

As in previous years there is a choice of

viewing, you can join the more refined

followers on the Top Touch or Get Down

and Dirty in the Bear Pit on the Bottom

Touch. However, wherever you choose to

watch, get behind the boys, give them all

the support you can

and let us create

‘Fortress Dings’.
