Asked whether the breakaway LTTEfaction, TMVP would contest the polls onthe UPFA ticket, Premjayantha expressedconfidence that even if Eastern Province

Chief Minister SivanasathuraiChandrakanthan contested on its own, hewould extend his support to the govern-ment in Parliament. He said that theywould adopt a different strategy in theNorthern and Eastern Provinces.

Former JVP heavyweight NandanaGunatilleke would contest on the UPFAticket from the Kalutara district, he said.Minister Premjayantha acknowledged thatKalutara would be perhaps the toughestelectoral district to contest due to many

top seasoned campaigners being in thefray.

Among the candidates vying for theKalutara district represented by 10 mem-bers, are Kumar Welgama, RohithaAbeygunawardena, Messrs MahindaSamarasinghe, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne,Nirmala Kotelawala, NandanaGunatilleke, Jayantha Samaraweera andthe Prime Minister’s son, ViduraWickremanayake. The Mahanayaka Theros have said that they wereintervening in the Sarath Fonseka affair in keepingwith the tradition that the Maha Sangha of the ancienttimes followed as regards disputes between the coun-try’s rulers and others.

The Mahanayaka Theros have cited as exampleof intervention of the Maha Sangha in a disputebetween King Dutugemunu and his brother Tissa.

Similarly Ven. Weliwita Asarana SaranaSaranangkara, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala andMigettuwatta Sri Sumangala Theros came forward attimes of national crisis according to recorded history.

Similarly, the Sangha had felt the need to comeforward at this moment to settle dispute between thegovernment and a former commander of the army, the prelates have said.

The Mahanayaka Theros have told PresidentMahinda Rajapaksa that the utterances by the retiredGeneral Fonseka during the election as a rival candi-date should be ignored as the former LTTE terroristssuch as Karuna Amman and Pillaiyan who evenattacked the Dalada Maligawa and the Sri MahaBodhi killing and maiming many people had been par-doned and accommodated in the government ranks.

He said that the Tamil Diaspora was still trying torevive the LTTE, though the group had been defeat-ed militarily. He said that the Army was maintaining aheavy presence in the region to meet any eventuali-ty.

Commenting on the recently concluded presiden-tial polls, he said that the Army would help the policeto maintain law and order during the upcoming par-liamentary polls.

While being appreciative of the government forimproving the living conditions of the forces, he saidthat the Army would concentrate on training this yearas they were fully occupied with military operationsover the past three years. He also discussed thesteps that had been taken to look after the warwounded, particularly centres at provincial level withthe first one established at Anuradhapura.(SF)

(Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabhamember Thushara Swarnathilake),Kurunegala (M. C. Jayaratne) andKalutara (prematurely retired FlightLieutenant Shantha Jayathilake).

Jayathilake, who had been with theSLAF Regiment, quit the service afterreceiving injuries in a bomb blast in theMorawewa area. He is on the staff ofDefence Secretary GotabhayaRajapaksa. Responding to The Islandqueries, he said that the JHU had nom-inated Ven. Ellawela Medhananda andVen. Omalpe Sobitha Thera as nationallist MPs.

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna(MEP) will field a candidate each forColombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala,Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Kandy,Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Digamadulladistricts. The MEP seeks one nationallist slot.

Over 20 ex-UNP MPs, includingKeheliya Rambukwella (Kandy),Mahinda Samarasinghe (Kalutara), Dr.Rajitha Senaratne (Kalutara),Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena(Matara), Milinda Moragoda (Colombo),Mohamed Faizer Mustapha (Kandy),Mahinda Ratnathilake (Ratnapura) andSusantha Punchinilame (Ratnapura)

will also contest on the UPFA ticket. ButMoragoda is contesting as the leader ofthe Sri Lanka National Congress. He isseeking two more slots to contest thepolls.

Veteran politician M. H. Mohamed, the leader of the nowdefunct UNP(DemocraticGroup) told TheIsland yester-day that hewas, too old tocontest anational elec-tion. The formerSpeaker saidthat he mightseek a nationallist seat but indi-cated no finaldecision hadbeen taken.

UPFA sources told The Island thatthe alliance would not be able toaccommodate the number of candi-dates as required by some parties inthe five-party Socialist Alliance.Sources said that the call for 11 slotsby the LSSP to contest Kegalle, Galle,Kalutara, Moneragala, Matale,

Hambantota, Polonnaruwa,Digamadulla, Trincomalee, Jaffna andPuttalam was unrealistic. Sources saidthe Communist Party, too, had soughtsix slots to contest Matara, Galle,Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy andAnuradhapura, whereas Vasudeva

Nanayakkara, leader of theDemocratic Left Front wants two

slots in Digamadulla. Nanayakkrawants to contest from theRatnapura District. Sri LankaMahajana Pakshaya leaderRanjith Navaratne plans to con-

test from the Kurunegala district. Sources said the Socialist

Alliance was asking for over 20 slotsto contest the polls and that requestcould not be met without jeopardisingpre-poll arrangements with other politi-cal parties and other candidates.

Former National List MP MervynSilva told The Island that he would con-test from the Gampaha District, thoughhe entered Parliament through thenational list previously.
