• Case Study

SCIAF’s thinking on gender
• High priority for SCIAF
• One of six cross-cutting issues in new SCIAF Approaches to International Development
• All programmes and projects are reviewed against criteria for each cross-cutting issue
![Page 4: SCIAF - Mainstreaming gender in international development](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020718/55666f21d8b42a3d3f8b51de/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
SCIAF’s approach to gender
• Gender equality is essential to poverty elimination and the achievement of the MDGs
• Gender equality does not mean equal numbers of men and women, boys and girls in all activities
• Gender equality signifies a society in which women, men, girls and boys can live equally fulfilling lives and be treated according to the same principles
![Page 5: SCIAF - Mainstreaming gender in international development](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020718/55666f21d8b42a3d3f8b51de/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Gender mainstreaming criteria• Has a gender analysis been
conducted, including social structures and root causes of gender inequality? Were both men and women involved in project design?
• Does the project address gender, including roles, control of resources, issues prioritised and ways in which new initiatives may affect males and females?
![Page 6: SCIAF - Mainstreaming gender in international development](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020718/55666f21d8b42a3d3f8b51de/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Gender mainstreaming criteria II• Will all planned
communications promote gender equality, showing women in positions of power and users of services as appropriate?
• Will sex-disaggregated data be collected as part of monitoring and evaluation?
• Does the project include appropriate capacity-building for the partner to address gender effectively across operations, policy, culture and staffing?
![Page 7: SCIAF - Mainstreaming gender in international development](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020718/55666f21d8b42a3d3f8b51de/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Challenges and ongoing work
• Many partners still focus on “women’s projects” which only address women’s practical needs
• Need to also address more strategic needs such as unequal social relations
• Mainstreaming gender across organisation and not just in international programmes
![Page 8: SCIAF - Mainstreaming gender in international development](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020718/55666f21d8b42a3d3f8b51de/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
