Rebreather SCBA
8 August, 2007 Technical Products Inc. 4
Why A Rebreather?
Open Loop SCBA• Uses air – 20% O2• Expired breath still contains 15% O2 – vented to
atmosphere & wasted
Closed Loop SCBA (Rebreather)• Recycles expired air to use all O2 (4 x efficiency)• Adds O2 as needed to extend breathability of trapped
volume• Problem is what to do with CO2 produced by respiration• Chemical scrubber strips out CO2

Closed Loop SCBA (Rebreather)
• Pendulum or loop configuration
• Uses scrubber to strip CO2
• Uses gas bottle(s) or solid state chemical (KO2) to maintain O2 concentration & gas volume
• Uses aural/nasal mask or mouthpiece/nose clip

Self Contained Self Rescuer (SCSR)

Self Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR)
• O2 Pendulum Rebreather• O2 flow demand regulated
automatically• LiOH CO2 Scrubber• When rebreather is spent
SCSR ‘docks’ to any other breathing air supply
• 1-hr breathing unit• Weighs 5.7-lb.

Self Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR)
• When needed uses opens container and deploys breathing hose
• First exhale purges lungs to atmosphere
• First inhale starts O2 at full flow
• Second exhale inflates counterlung
• O2 flow demand regulated automatically

CO2 Scrubber
• LiOH scrubber absorbs CO2 from respiration
• 50% more efficient than CaOH
• Micropore Inc. configuration fixes LiOH in polyethylene matrix– Rigid structure– Controlled airflow– No settling– No channelization– 1-hr scrubber weighs 1.2-lb

Docking Device
Allows user to change or exchange air supplies without breaking seal
• Allows selection of air supply in real time
• Multiple mechanical safeties– Can’t ‘select’ to vent to
atmosphere– Can’t detach ‘live’ air
supply

Gas Bottle
• Demo system uses Al bottle (46-l) of O2 at 3,000-psi
• Production system will use SS bottle (110-l) for 4,500-psi O2
• US DOT will not certify carbon wrapped Al for high pressure O2.
• European agencies approved carbon wrapped Al 4,500-psi O2 with savings of >2-lb

SCSR Advantages
•O2 on-demand only – most efficient approach since there is no ‘lost’ O2 (c.f. constant flow)
•Pressurized gas – just check the gauge to see if the system is serviceable (c.f. solid state KO2 systems)
•Pressurized gas – simple response to high demand (c.f. solid state KO2 systems)
•Dockable – unlimited air supply without breaking seal
•Dockable – seamless interface to other FSR & air sources
•Minimized counterlung with 100% air exchange prevents N2 hypoxia

Breathing Air Monitor
Current devices are too smart, complex and expensive for ‘global’ use• Digital displays• Data logging• PC connectivity
Current devices are too short lived for economic application in ‘global’ use• 2-yr sensor life• 2-yr battery life
8 August, 2007 Technical Products Inc. 19
Breathing Air Monitor
New devices is simple, application specific and in-expensive • LED ‘idiot’ lights (plus siren and vibrator)• Monitors O2 and Co levels simultaneously (go/no-go)• Stand-alone monitoring device• Will be IS (Tridelphia certified)
New device has sufficient life to make economic sense• 5-yr sensor life• 2-yr battery life (rechargeable battery, field servicable)
