Presenters

John Smith is a Project Coordinator and researcher at the Research and Training Center on Community Living. As a person with a disability he has a strong professional and personal interest in programs and initiatives directed to the development of the capacities related to self-determination and self-advocacy among persons with disabilities, and also the social inclusion of persons with disabilities. John has also managed several research and program evaluation projects related to the development of self-determination and self-advocacy.

Mark Olson is a Project Coordinator at the Research and Training Center on Community Living where he writes curriculum and provides training to people who provide direct support. Throughout his career he has provided service to people with disabilities in recreation and inclusion, residential and daily living skills, vocational skills and advocacy. In addition he has worked in frontline management in the non-profit industry. His key policy interests include health care, disability, education, workforce recognition and development, civic engagement, human rights and the environment.

Hunter Sargent is a Native American man who is a life-long resident of Minneapolis. He is also a person with a developmental disability called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Hunter is a dynamic public speaker and has advocated on behalf of all people with disabilities, working with The Arc and People First groups in Minnesota. Hunter recently wrote and recorded a rap called "Stop Bullying."

A decade ago, most information about self-advocacy was not easily accessible to self-advocates. Much of it was in three-ring binders and not easily used. The Internet has certainly made it easier to share information. However, the process of making information accessible – translating knowledge into usable, concrete information, take a lot of work.

(Hunter) As a public speaker on FASD and self-advocacy, I need good tools. The Internet really helps me reach a lot of people. And as a self-advocate this website has been great, giving me access to good information and other opinions.

Self-Advocacy Online evolved from lessons learned on other projects at the Research and Training Center on Community Living, including the College of Direct Support and Quality Mall. Beyond research, our center has expertise in curriculum design, web development, media production, and content delivery.
