LONDON, 4 Oct— A virus that makes frogs bleed to death is wiping them out in much of Britain, biologists said.
The ranavirus has killed off 80 percent of common frogs in the worst-hit areas and threatens otheramphibians, a senior research fellow at the Zoological Society of London told The Sunday Telegraph.Scientist Trent Garner said, “Many of these populations are hanging on by a handful of frogs. If thedisease causes the frog populations to fall so low then so many other factors come into play that couldcause local extinctions.” The researchers examined frog numbers in a selection of populations aroundthe country where ranavirus disease has been reported since 1996. 6 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Tuesday, 5 October, 2010
World Teachers’ DayThe 5th October 2010, 12th waning of Tawthalin,
1372 Myanmar Era, (Tuesday) is the WorldTeachers’ Day. It is an auspicious day in theeducation field.
Indeed, the paying respects to the respectablepersons in response to the gratitude is auspicious. As such, we all have to deeply honour the teacherson the occasion of the World Teachers’ Day.Motto of World Teachers’ Day
The theme of the motto for the world Teachers’Day is designated annually.
The motto for the World Teachers’ Day-2008was ‘Teachers’ Master’.
In 2009 it was ‘Build the Future Invest inTeachers Now’.
This year, the motto for the World Teachers’Day is ‘Recovery Begins with Teachers’.
In reviewing the mottos and themes for theWorld Teachers’ Day, I have learnt that teachersare playing a key role in the education sector; thatthe best investment is to nurture the teachers so asto shape the brighter future; that strenuous effortsare to be made for putting investment in nurturingthe teachers as initial stage to have the economic, social and technological recovery with a view toovercoming the world economic crisis; and that themottos and themes for the World Teachers’ Daymean encouraging the teachers to be able to achievegreater progress.Future depends on teachers
The word “world teachers” is inclusive ofMyanmar teachers. The teacher is a general termfor both female and male teachers. Likewise, pupilstudent means both female and male pupil students.
A renowned scholar of the world ‘William James’said:
‘The teachers of this country, one may say, have its future in their hands.’
According to his definition, the future of acountry is in the hands of teachers of that country.
It is true. The new generation youths on whoma country relies actually possess the future of thenation. Indeed, those who nurture the new generationhuman resource youths are teachers.
Future comes from hands of today’s teachersU Than Oo
Accordingly, it can be said that the future of acountry is kept in the hands of teachers of thatcountry, referring to the above-mentioned saying.
It is a simple, noticeable and acceptablepresentation.
Likewise, one more expert left a short and sweetsaying. He is Henery Brook Adams. He said:
‘A teacher affects eternity, he can never tellwhere his influence stops’
It is true. Myanmar people deeply accept thatteacher is an eternal benefactor in the traditionalculture and belief. Myanmar people firmly believethat the influence of teachers over pupils will nevercome to an end and the power of teachers will be everlasting.
With regard to the concepts on teachers, a specialattention was paid to teaching of teachers in the‘educational century’, ‘education age’ and‘educational human society’, effectiveness of teachingand necessity of guarantee for the future.
‘The future of the nation is on the shoulders ofteaches and how they teach kids; the future of theworld is in the classroom where the teachers are. Andif we have any chance to guarantee a positive bridgeto the 21st Century, it is how we educate the childrenin the classroom to day.’
Richard Reginald GreenIt is true. The 21st Century is the significant one.
Education is jewel in the globalization while teacheris key player. Those who can provide proper educationare teachers.
It is necessary to place emphasis on the saying ofMyanmar scholars: ‘Without teaching of a teacherone will not do things correctly.
Teachers are to train and give advice to thestudents not only in the classrooms but also at thesports grounds outside the classroom throughcorrect ways and techniques. It is necessary toperform the systematic teaching and make surethat there is proper learning of pupils from theteachers. Teachers are to initiate the pupils to beable to have creative and innovative thinking. It isthe duty of the teachers.Four learning pillars
After holding a coordination meeting, the world
class scholars unanimously adopted four learningpillars of the 21st Century. They are:
(1) Learning to know(2) Learning to do(3) Learning to be(4) Learning to live together
World teachers are to systematically train andnurture their pupils in and out the classroom in linewith the four learning pillars. As such, the pupilswill have wide range of necessary knowledge andtechnology and individual all-round development. They will be able to enhance co-existence instead ofco-extinction.
Due to receiving correct way of teaching andvaluable guidance from the teachers, the pupilswill have the capabilities of correct thinking, innovation, assessment and consideration.Role of today’s teacher
Nowadays, the 21st Century’s teachers areconstantly learning everything with high spirit ofteachers and behavior like that of eternal students. They have to nurture their pupils to love for learningand to pursue life long learning.
The teachers discharging the noble duty are touplift themselves with higher proficiency to be ableto stand as the persons with loving-kindness,compassion, the will to rejoice at their pupils’success or prosperity, good will, the sacrificingspint and sympathy.
As such, they will be the 21st century’s greatteachers on whom the pupils rely.All-round decorators
Over 60 million teachers in the world today arestriving for equipping over 1000 million pupilswith physical and mental development, improvementof moral characters, enhancement of aestheticenjoyment and vocational development.
Nowadays, all unanimously accept that theworld teachers (including Myanmar teachers) aredecorating the world with education and they areshaping the future.
All the pupils owe gratitude to the teachersforever.

Four work guidelines(1) Let’s analyze everything scientifically without
believing blindly.(2) Let’s rely on knowledge and intellectual power
after abandoning irrationalism.(3) Let’s emphasize on Abhidhamma abandoning
unsystematic assessments(4) Innocent people are getting nearer to the truth than
those holding old irrationalism.Myanmar History and present democratization process
When Myanmar regained her independence afterexperiencing the Second World War, there emergedsectarianism, ideological differences, personality cult andracism in the country instead of rebuilding the nation as aunited one. The nation faced civil war due to disintegrationof the national consolidation and outside interferences andthe people became innocent victims of the civil war. Thenation lagged far behind other countries in development. The nation experienced various forms of difficulties underthe rule of economically and politically centralized singleparty socialism. Finally, the nation faced violence andunrest in 1988. Due to lack of cooperation with the Tatmadawgovernment who practised market-oriented economic systemand multiparty system in the aftermath of the unrest, thenation has seen outside interferences and economic sanctionsagain. Then how do we strive for the nation to be a modernand developed one?
The Modern People Party will try our best to turn outmore and more national entrepreneurs, modern workers, farmers and intellectuals and intelligentsia for developmentof private sector. We will strive for lifting of the economicsanctions and to invite foreign investment. Especially, drive for development of rural farmers who make up 70 percent of the whole population of Myanmar is flourishing ofdemocracy in Myanmar. Democracy cannot flourish in apoor country.
At a time when the nation is put on the path todemocratization and market-oriented economic system, the Modern People Party will adopt the followingagricultural policy for increasing per capital income ofrural farmers, economic development, living standard andknowledge. They are as follows:-
- to ensure that every grower has a right to sell cropsas they like, to trade their crops and to enjoy theirprofit freely
- to develop private-owned agricultural businesswith the use of investments from sources inside thecountry and abroad
- to set up state andpr iva te -ownedagricultural banksin order to provideloans with long-term low interestfor development ofagricultural busi-nesses
- to encourage joint-ventured agri-cultural businessesout of own volition
- to improve the living standard of farmers inharmony with progress in agricultural production
- to promulgate laws preventing against tradingand pawning estate that can cause the emergenceof landlords who exploit growers and monopolizeagricultural farming to delay the latter’s progress
- to enjoy the right to export agriculture produce, rice, by farmers themselves or through the tradersassociation.
- to practise free competition system that can benefitboth producers and consumers in trading at homeand abroad and to promulgate law againstmonopolization of a certain association or agroup
- to set up market research groups to enable thefarmers to have information about crops that arein demand in international market and crop pricesand to send Myanmar farmers and growers tocountries achieving success in agriculture sector
- to encourage government and private sector inconducting research on high yield quality strains, agricultural methods and modern farm equipment
- First, in market-oriented agriculture, growersand farmers will be able to mass-produce andmass-distribute their crops only after being ableto engage in small-scale agricultural business. As a result, their crops will be distributed to theregion, then to the whole nation and then toglobal market. As today’s Myanmar farmershave had links with international markets, thetime has come for farmers to know socio-economic conditions in the local andinternational issues whether or not they have thedesire to do so.
The 21st Century is the threshold of the globalizationperiod. Most of the countries turned into the multipartydemocracy (capitalism) as the globalization is seen notonly for the economic sector but also for the politicalsector. In the developing world, all the countries arestriving for modernizing themselves.
Taking lessions from the bitter history, the people, thepolitical parties and the Tatmadaw as three nationalstrengths are to join hands in building the new democraticnation.
Our Modern People Party does not support theworks with terrorist acts against the culture that destroysmodern materials and knowledge because these activitiesretrogress the culture and civilization. We do not supportthe violation that occurs between downtrodden and upperclass societies because their conflict will not contributeto the achievement. Our party supports peaceful anddeveloped educative activity. We will practise the socialscience activity when theory becomes a material forcewhen it grips the masses.
We pledge to shoulder the duty of displaying newmodern social world with a view to emerging Myanmar asa modern and developed new democratic nation.
May all the Myanmar people enjoy physical andmental well-being.

Sunderbans tigers were found toweigh nearly half as much as theircousins in the region —INTERNET
DHAKA, 4 Oct — Tigers prowling thefamous mangrove forests of Bangladeshare nearly half the weight of other wildBengal tigers in South Asia, a study hasfound. The average weight of female ti-gers in the Sundarbans forests was76.7kg (170lb), according to the US Fishand Wildlife Service research.
But other wild Bengal tigers in the
region tipped the scales at 138.2 kg onaverage. Researchers said this could bebecause Sundarbans tigers ate smaller deer. The team believes the big cats found in themangrove forest, which stretches fromBangladesh to India, could be among theworld’s smallest tigers. They belong to oneof nine sub-species of Bengal tiger in In-dia, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
Researchers from the University ofMinnesota and the Bangladesh Forest De-partment — who carried out the study forthe US Fish and Wildlife Service —weighed three Sundarbans tigers. Two ofthe animals were captured and sedated, but the other one had been killed by vil-lagers. Adam Barlow, one of the authorsof the research, said they do not know whythe Sundarbans tigers are so small.
