KLS Git - B.E (Electronics and Communication)Batch of : 1990 - 1994
My memories of GIT …
“My love for computers started at GIT and I wasamong the few students who had an AT 286 in1992. Programming that I learned in collegehelped me get into a PG Course at C-DAC aftermy Engineering in 1994. I spent a lot of time inthe computer lab and my teachers wereinstrumental in helping me develop myprogramming skills in early years”.
My advice to GITians …
“Choose your job based on what you will learnand contribute. Don't worry about money - ifyou have the right skills and attitude, there is nolimit to the amount of money you can make”.“Don't waste your time working for a managerwho does not have your best interests at heart. You'll get no growth, and the negativity willslow you down”.“Never turn down an opportunity to travel.Travel will give you some fantastic learning, exposure, and experience”.“Being a generalist is not a bad thing - theflexibility will help you fit into different rolesbased on what your team needs. Have theability to deep dive to a job, with a new skillbased on demand”.
Initial career days...
As the head of Supply Chain and Post Sales IT atthe Global Delivery Center at Motorola, owned byGoogle, Rakesh spent about 17 years in variousfunctions and locations, starting as a SystemsAnalyst at the Paging Factory in Electronics City,Bengaluru in 1997. He travelled extensively andworked with project teams across Asia, Europe,North and South America. He was a part of thecore team setting up a greenfield manufacturingfactory in Sriperumbudur for exporting Mobilephones and Network equipment to Asia andEurope.
Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug…
When Google sold Motorola to Lenovo in 2014, itgave Rakesh an opportunity to review his careerand pursue opportunities that he had seen as partof my job in the Supply Chain. He says – “I saw thatthere was an opportunity to build a product thatbrought the power of Cloud and Mobile to smalland medium companies that found it difficult todigitize their operations. I spoke to a lot ofpotential customers and friends and decided that Iwould play a role in India's Digitization, Mobile, and Cloud Story. The more time I spent in thisspace, the greater the conviction that this is apromising space that will provide me theopportunity to make a change”. And Mobijini wasborn – a brand well-known with Customers inIndia, Thailand, Maldives and Africa. It hasmanaged to acquire marquee Clients like Flex,Western Digital, OnePlus, Dharampal SatyapalGroup, SAP Swiss, Blue Skies and AtmosphereGroup of Resorts for their B2B Apps and Salesplatform .

The Swiss Army Knife of technologyInnovation.
Growing up in a highly entrepreneurial andforward-thinking family environment, hehas always been inspired by the future toproduce innovations for today.
Career days...
Rohit is currently the Vice President & Head ofTechnology R&D for New York Life InsuranceCompany (NYLIC). He is based out of their offices inNew York, USA. New York Life Insurance Companyhas been in business for the past 175 years and is thethird largest life insurance company in the UnitedStates, the largest mutual life insurance company inthe United States and is ranked #73 on the 2020Fortune 500 list of the largest United Statescorporations by total revenue.
Rohit developed his lifelong zeal for programming andcomputers around the age of 12. A few years later, hebegan his career as a Software Engineer at Infosys Ltd.in Mysore, India before being hired by IBM as anApplication Developer. Rohit had only been in this rolefor a few months when he was thrilled to be awardedthe IBM Excellence Award. Around this time, ahankering for further education led to his acceptanceby Northeastern University in Boston to complete anMS in Computer Science. Rohit was granted aGraduate Dean’s Scholarship, an honor given to onlythe top 3% of his class. Brown Brothers Harriman & Co.quickly snatched him up for their highly selectiveInnovation Internship, where he developed apioneering analytics product for foreign exchangedata. This outstanding technology breakthrough wasthe catalyst for building further revenue-generatinganalytics products for the firm. Upon graduation, Rohitwas immediately invited to become the company’sAssistant Vice President.
My memories of GIT …
“I have very fond memories of my stay at GIT. In my 4years at GIT between 2004 and 2008, GIT taught mefoundational qualities like creative problem solving andcontinual learning. The Computer Science Departmentwas instrumental in shaping my technical skills andsetting the right foundation. Above all, it was the GITculture which embodies a strong sense of family, careand humanity that has left a lasting impression on meand is something that I embrace even today. ”
“Fresh graduates need to focus on learning broadproblem-solving skills rather than solely focuson technical skills to be successful in their careers.Understanding how their skills can add valueto corporations, how decision making happens at scale, how technologies can be applied to solve real worldproblems effectively will enable them to have a holisticview and make them effective and sought after. This canbe done by developing a strong network of trustedpeople at all levels and by interacting with them andasking the right questions. Be aspirational but staygrounded”.
My advice to GIT’ians …
“Stay focused and try to derive maximum value out ofyour studies at GIT; focus on practically applying theskills learned by way of academic projects, internships, pro bono consulting etc. Leverage the power ofplatforms like LinkedIn and try to develop a trustednetwork of people who can help guide/mentor in thearea of your interest.”
