SACRAMENT OF

HOLY ORDERS

Page 2: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church.

➢Holy Orders includes three degrees:

i. Episcopate ii. Presbyterate iii. Diaconate.

Page 3: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢ ORDINATION IS THE SACRAMENTAL ACT WHICH INTEGRATES A MAN INTO THE ORDER OF BISHOPS, PRESBYTERS OR DEACONS.

➢ ORDINATION CONFERS THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. IT PERMITS THE EXERCISE OF SACRED POWER WHICH COMES FROM CHRIST THROUGH THE CHURCH.

Page 4: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

THE VISIBLE SIGN OF THE ORDINATION IS THE LAYING ON OF HANDS BY THE BISHOP WITH CONSECRATORY PRAYER.

Page 5: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The chosen people was constituted by God as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

➢Within the people of Israel God chose the Levites, one of the twelve tribes, and set it apart for liturgical service.

Page 6: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

PRIESTS ARE APPOINTED TO ACT ON BEHALF OF MEN IN RELATION TO GOD, TO OFFER GIFTS AND SACRIFICES FOR SINS.

Page 7: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The Church sees in the service of the Levites a prefiguring of the ordained ministry of the New Covenant.

➢Everything that the priesthood

of the Old Covenant prefigured finds

its fulfilment in Christ Jesus.

Page 8: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

THE ONE PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST IS MADE PRESENT THROUGH THE MINISTERIAL PRIESTHOOD. ONLY CHRIST IS THE TRUE PRIEST. THE OTHERS ARE HIS MINISTERS.

Page 9: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Christ has made the Church a kingdom of priests. The whole community of believers is priestly. The whole Church is a priestly people.

➢Through baptism all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ.

Page 10: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

This participation is called the common priesthood of the faithful. The faithful exercise their priesthood according to their own vocation through their participation in Christ’s mission as priest, prophet and king.

Page 11: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢CCCCCThe ministerial priesthood of bishops and priests and the common priesthood of the faithful participate each in its own proper way in the one priesthood of Christ.

➢While being ordered to one another they differ essentially.

➢The common priesthood is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace – a life of faith, hope and charity, a life according to the Spirit.

Page 12: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

THE MINISTERIAL PRIESTHOOD IS AT THE SERVICE OF THE COMMON PRIESTHOOD. IT IS DIRECTED AT THE UNFOLDING OF THE BAPTISMAL GRACE OF ALL CHRISTIANS.

Page 13: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The priest by the sacrament of Holy Orders acts in persona Christi Capitis. In ecclesial service of ordained minister Christ himself is present to the Church as Head of his Body, Shepherd of his flock, High Priest of the redemptive sacrifice and Teacher of the Truth.

Page 14: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The Presence of Christ in the minister is not to be understood as if the latter were preserved from all human weaknesses, error and even sin.

➢The guarantee extends to the sacraments. Even the minister’s sin cannot impede the fruit of grace.

Page 15: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The priesthood is ministerial. It is a service. Christ made himself the least and the servant of all. The priesthood has been instituted for the good of women and men and the communion of the Church.

Page 16: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The ministerial priesthood has the task of representing Christ before the assembly of the faithful. And of acting in the name of the whole Church when presenting to God the prayer of the Church, above all when offering Eucharistic sacrifice.

➢It is because the ministerial priesthood represents Christ that it can represent the Church.

Page 17: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Bishops, priests and deacons exercise divinely instituted ecclesiastical ministry in different degrees.

➢Apostles were endowed by Christ with special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. By the imposition of hands they passed on to their auxiliaries the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is transmitted down to our day through episcopal consecration.

Page 18: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

THE FULNESS OF THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS IS CONFERRED BY EPISCOPAL CONSECRATION.

Page 19: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Episcopal consecration confers, together with the office of sanctifying, the offices of teaching and ruling.

➢The character and collegial nature of the episcopal order are evidenced by the Church’s ancient practice which calls for several bishops to participate in the consecration of a new bishop.

Page 20: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

THROUGH THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS PRIESTS SHARE IN THE UNIVERSAL DIMENSION OF THE MISSION THAT CHRIST ENTRUSTED TO THE APOSTLES. THEY ARE PREPARED FOR THE UNIVERSAL MISSION OF SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.

Page 21: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢In the Eucharistic assembly of the faithful priests exercise in a supreme degree their sacred office.

➢Acting in the person of Christ and proclaiming his mystery, they unite the offerings of the faithful to the sacrifice of Christ.

Page 22: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

IN THE SACRIFICE OF THE MASS THEY MAKE PRESENT AGAIN AND APPLY, UNTIL THE COMING OF THE LORD, THE UNIQUE SACRIFICE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. CHRIST OFFERING HIMSELF ONCE AND FOR ALL A SPOTLESS VICTIM TO THE FATHER.FROM THIS UNIQUE SACRIFICE THEIR WHOLE PRIESTLY MINISTRY DRAWS ITS STRENGTH.

Page 23: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢In each local assembly of the faithful the priests represent the bishop whom they are associated with.

➢In part they take upon themselves his duties and solicitude and in their daily toils discharge them.

Page 24: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

The promise of obedience they make to the bishop at the moment of ordination and the kiss of peace from him at the end of the ordination liturgy mean that the bishop considers them his co-workers and they in return owe him love and obedience.

Page 25: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢All priests are bound together by intimate sacramental brotherhood.

➢In a special way they form one priestly body in the diocese to which they are attached under own bishop.

Page 26: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

Unity of presbyterium finds liturgical expression in custom of presbyters’ imposing hands, after the bishop, during the rite of ordination.

Page 27: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢At lower level of hierarchy are found deacons who receive imposition of hands not unto the priesthood but unto the ministry. ➢At an ordination to the diaconate only the bishop lays hands

on the candidate, signifying the deacon’s special attachment to the bishop in the tasks of his diakonia.

Page 28: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

IT IS THE TASK OF THE DEACON TO ASSIST BISHOP AND PRIESTS IN THE CELEBRATION OF EUCHARIST, IN DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION, ASSISTING AT AND BLESSING MARRIAGES, IN PROCLAMATION OF GOSPEL AND PREACHING, IN PRESIDING OVER FUNERALS, AND IN DEDICATING THEMSELVES TO THE VARIOUS MINISTRIES OF CHARITY.

Page 29: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The permanent diaconate can be conferred on married men.

➢The essential rite of the sacrament of Holy Orders for all three degrees consists in the bishop’s imposition of hands on the head of the ordinand and and in the bishop’s specific consecratory prayer asking God for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and his gifts proper to the ministry to which the candidate is being ordained.

Page 30: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Christ himself chose the apostles. He gave them a share in his mission and authority. He keeps his flock under constant protection through his apostles and guides it still through these same pastors who continue his work today.

Page 31: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Validly ordained bishops, i.e, those who are in the line of apostolic succession, validly confer the three degrees of the sacrament of Holy Orders. ➢Only baptized man validly receives sacred ordination. No one

has right to receive sacrament of Holy Orders. He is called to it by God.

Page 32: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢They are men of faith who live a celibate life and who intend to remain celibate for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Called to consecrate themselves with undivided heart to the Lord and to the affairs of the Lord.

Page 33: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢The sacrament of Holy Orders (like Baptism and Confirmation) confers an indelible spiritual character and cannot be repeated or conferred temporarily.

Page 34: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢Someone validly ordained cannot become a layman again in the strict sense because the character imprinted by ordination is for ever. The vocation and mission received on the day of his ordination mark him permanently. ➢Since it is ultimately Christ who acts and effects salvation through the ordained minister the unworthiness of the latter does not prevent Christ from acting.

Page 35: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢St. Gregory of Nazianzus – about priests – We must begin by purifying ourselves before purifying others; we must be instructed to be able to instruct, become light to illuminate, draw close to God to bring him close to others, be sanctified to sanctify, lead by the hand and counsel prudently.

Page 36: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢St. Gregory of Nazianzus – Who is the priest? He is the defender of truth, who stands with angels, gives glory with archangels, causes sacrifices to rise to the altar on high, shares Christ’s priesthood, refashions creation, restores it in God’s image, recreates it for the world on high and, even greater, is divinized and divinizes.

Page 37: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

➢St. John Vianney – The priest continues the work of redemption on earth…. If we really understood the priest on earth, we would die not of fright but of love… The Priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.

The End!

Page 39: SFX PJ RCIA 2017/18 - The Sacrament of Holy Orders

• Sacrament - a visible sign of an inward grace, especially one of the solemn Christian rites considered to have been instituted by Jesus Christ to symbolize or confer grace: the sacraments of the Roman Catholic (and Greek Orthodox churches) are baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, matrimony, penance, holy orders, and extreme unction.

• 1 Cor 15: 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.

• A classic characterization of Jesus is that he is priest, prophet, and king. As priest, he sanctifies, that is to say, he reestablishes the lost link between divinity and humanity; as prophet, he speaks and embodies the divine truth; and as king, he leads us on the right path, giving guidance to the human project. You might say that, as priest, he is the life; as prophet, he is the truth; and as king he is the way.
