Sherwood Newsletter Sherwood Community Links project BY Lisa Morris Resident Involvement & Marketing Manager

Sherwood Community Links project aim is to create learning initiatives to facilitate integration of communities within Sherwood community and Barton neighbourhoods, and to improve the conditions of life for ALL residents of Sherwood Place and surrounding area, by working together with local people and statutory authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare and leisure time occupation.Soha Housing is a social landlord based in Oxfordshire where we run and manage around 5,300 properties. We have around 30 homes in and around Barton and we want to work with everyone in your community to continue to improve where you live.

Soha are supporting the ‘Sherwood Community Links Project’ to help residents develop a local newsletter and website. We believe this project will allow you as residents to promote the vibrant, diverse community you live in and help improve access to information. This project will provide free training and support for local volunteers to bring in stories and news from local residents, community groups and service providers. If you would like to share your story and get to know your neighbours why not get involved. If you have an interesting photo or would like to promote an event to your community the Sherwood Project would love to hear from you. The Sherwood website and newsletter are written and produced by local people. If you could spend just an hour of your time the project would be delighted to hear from you.

From Soha Hous-

ing“Soha ’s Ne ighbour-hoods Team are out and about in Sherwood Place at least once a month (usually the 3rd Wednesday) but that’s not the only way we listen to residents.*

A couple of years ago, Soha held a ‘big doorknock’ when we closed the office for a day to get every member of staff out and about meeting residents on their doorsteps getting their views. Last year, a dedicated team phoned, wrote to and visited residents who our contractors had recently attended. We wanted to see how residents experienced our repairs service, from the moment they called into our Customer Service Advisers to the time they shut the door after a successful job done. At the end of 2010 we invited residents to “Ask the Chief Executive a question” when we asked for feedback on our Annual Report. I found out more about what concerns residents in this neighbourhood but I was also able to put right a few things that really shouldn’t have gone wrong. I’m always grateful to residents who take the time to contact us. * PS Why not join us on one of our estate walkabouts? Just call us on 01235 515 900 or 0800 014 15 45 (free from a landline) and we’ll make a time and place to suit you.

By Ahmed A Rahman Northway Community Associations in collaboration with Oxford Brookes has developed a teach- ing courses including Computers and Internet for Beginner's, digital photography, desktop publishing, web design and flash animation for all people of Northway, Headington, Woodfarm, Marston and Barton. Northway IT Centre monitors and supervises all learners with an aim to equip them with computing skills to help them to use computers for their leisure, or to start using computers in their business or for creative design. Senior citizens living in Northway and around are taught the basics of word processing, emails and shopping online, in completely free-of-charge workshops.

This is a part of Northway Community Associations collaboration with Age UK and Oxford Brookes Uninversity and Oxford City’s Intergen-erational pilot project hosted in the community centre has shown to be beneficial in challenging ageism, bridging the gap between the genera-tions and providing an opportunity for older people to enhance their quality of life. This pilot project is designed to bring Oxford Brookes students and older people in Oxford city to work together in learning activities and to allow the generations to learn from each other.

The IT Centre has provided IT courses for those unemployed or seek-ing employment. To date over 80 students have benefited from the IT

facilities on offer and Northway Association is expecting to expand these services in the coming months. These projects are managed Ahmed Rahman, the Age UK IT Development Worker and Northway’s IT manager.

possible closure of Headington’s Bury Knowle Library

George Knight, the Warden of St., Mary’s Church in Barton is concerned at the possible loss of Headington’s Bury Knowle Library. On Saturday the 12th of March he watched many children using the facilities of the Library and reflected on the damage the loss of the library will have on this community. If you wish to support Mr Knights’ view, then sign the petition, let us know your views, be active for the community. By Artwell

involvement from hard to reach groups and help Soha assess the service needs of diverse groups. Involving ten-ants from the BME communities can bring different ideas, knowl-edge and experiences to any decision-making process, thereby con-tr ibut ing to the im-provement of service delivery

• Help to foster sustain-able relationships be-tween Soha and the BME community.

BME Community Neighbourhood Research

Soha are keen to promote Black Minority Ethnic resident community research partners.Soha feel that it is important that researchers are aware and have an understanding of the issues within their commu-nity. With this approach, it is hoped that BME residents are more likely to engage in com-munication with the commu-nity. This will help the commu-nity, and also Soha’s under-standing of local issues and aspirations.

Benefit to researchers:

• It offers the opportunity for residents to develop or update their skills

• The flexibility of inter-viewing could be attrac-tive to women and other groups who have child-care and other family responsibilities

• Availability of incentives • It would enable indi-

viduals to gain confi-dence to engage with people outside their immediate social net-works and gain greater appreciation of other cultures and customs

Benefits to Soha:

• Result in a more diverse BME community partici-pating in the research

• Encouraging further

Introducing David Winton Soha Neighbourhoods Officer

Just in case we haven’t met yet, I’d like to introduce myself to all the residents of Sherwood Place, in particular Soha residents. I do a walkabout every month on the estate and, if you have the time, it would be great to have you come along, too. Call me if you would like to join me and we can arrange a convenient place to meet.I have been a housing officer for over 10 years and have worked on many estates throughout Ox-

fordshire, seeing how improvements can so often be led by community involvement.  By getting involved, you, too, can make a real difference to Sherwood Place!  Meanwhile, you know your estate better than I do, and I always welcome residents’ feedback.  If you have views or concerns, please do contact me by phone or, as I say, join a walkabout.  My number is 01235 515 900 or 0800 014 15 45 (free from a lan-dline), or email me at [email protected].
