SHS NEWS “Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!”
January 2019
Notes from the Principal & More
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:
I hope everyone had a good break. One more day
to go! We will see everyone on Tuesday, Jan. 8,
2019.
Missed Finals: Make-up final exams will be
conducted this week. An absence must be excused
for a student to be given this option. I will be
meeting with students on Tuesday to let them
know when their finals must be taken.

Weather: I know it is hard to believe it is winter
with our warm weather, but it is. Please expect the
weather to change at any time. Be aware that the
doors at the school do not open until 7:00 a.m.
The doors that open are at the west side of the
school, closest to the gym. At 7:00 a.m., the
students can come in and hang out in the café until
7:15 a.m. If a student has a class in the portable
buildings, they are encouraged to wear their coat
when they are walking to class.
Attention All Juniors:
Immunization Requirements Have Changed!
The law now requires that all 12th-graders are
required to show proof of having received two (2)
doses of the meningococcal vaccine unless the
first dose was given on or after the student’s 16th
birthday.
All health requirements are required to be
completed and on file with the school nurse by
the first day of school. No student will be
allowed to attend school until this requirement
is met.
It is not too early to begin preparing for the next
school year. It is recommended that you get
vaccinated now in order to avoid any last-minute
rush during the summer. In addition to healthcare
providers, health departments and many
pharmacies offer this vaccine.
Please contact Mrs. Gonzalez, the school nurse, if
you have questions.

Creative Writing
The co-presidents of the Creative Writing Club, Julia Kwiat and Caden Gudmunson, were recently
elected and immediately stepped up to assist the other members in thinking outside the box. The
group has been willing to share their ideas, their energy and their love for writing; it has created an
atmosphere that is infectious in which the members are always willing to write. So far, the group has
written poems, songs, short films and they are working on novels that are out of this world! Those
interested in seeing some of this work can look forward to the group’s display at the Spring Variety
Show.

Educators Rising
Educators Rising had the opportunity to read to the students at Prairie View Elementary School on
Wednesday, Dec. 12. Fourteen of our high school students teamed up in groups of two or three to read a
Christmas-themed story to the class and complete a related craft with the elementary students. Both the high
school students and the elementary students had a great time interacting with each other.

Coming in January: National Drug Facts Week
National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) is a national health observance for teens to promote local
events that use NIDA science to shatter the myths about drugs. During the week of Jan. 22, SHS DCP/SAFE
will be conducting activities to increase knowledge on the dangers of drug use. More to come in the
February newsletter. For more information on National Drug Facts Week, please go to
https://teens.drugabuse.gov/national-drug-facts-week.
DCP/SAFE: Safe Driving Activities during December
December was National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. DCP/SAFE created an awareness
bulletin board to remind students of the risks of driving impaired. Then during lunch periods the last week of
December, we held an activity for students to participate in where they could see what impaired driving may
feel like. To do this simulation, DCP/SAFE set up a Mario cart game and students texted while playing the
game to see how it impacts the ability to focus on driving. We had drunk goggles for students to wear and
perform tasks to see how vision and coordination are impacted. Officer Fasnacht, the SHS resource officer,
put students through mock sobriety testing while wearing the drunk goggles. We also had a quiz board on
safe driving, which allowed students to test their knowledge on safe driving.
DCP/SAFE would like to remind everyone once again of the importance of safe driving. Below is a “Rate
Your Risk” quiz on distracted driving. Take a moment to rate yourself and, if needed, make the effort to
reduce your risk to keep yourself, your passengers and others on the road safe.

Guidance Upcoming Events
Incoming Freshman Curriculum Night is Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6:00 p.m. This is an event designed for
8th-grade students and parents to meet the high school teachers and sign up for a small group meeting with
their counselor.
Life in High School is Thursday, Jan. 17. Student “ambassadors” from SHS will present to the 8th-grade
students at SMS about what to expect in high school.
2019-2020 Course Selection
The majority of current freshmen, sophomores and juniors have completed their online course selection. If
you’d like to see or edit your student’s course choices, you can view them on the Tyler Student Portal under
the 2019-20 school year.
College Visits
Juniors and seniors should schedule a College Visit Day to tour a college or university of your choice. If you
pick up and complete a College Visit Day form from Guidance two to three days before your visit, you won’t
end up with an unexcused absence.
SAT
All juniors will take the SAT April 9 during the school day. Students do NOT need to register; SHS will take
care of that. Students can practice at www.khanacademy.org with the free account that they created.
Sending SAT or ACT scores with college applications: Many colleges will take SAT or ACT scores from
your transcript; however, if a college requires you to send your test scores directly from the testing company,
use the following links:
SAT – www.collegeboard.org and log in to your account.
ACT – www.actstudent.org and log in to your account.
It will cost $12 per score report you send.
