15 FUN FACTS ON CANADA

1. Canada spans 9,984,670 sq. km and comprises 6 time zones. 2. Canada is home to the longest street in the world. Yonge Street in Ontario starts at Lake Ontario, and runs north through Ontario to the Minnesota border, a distance of almost 2,000 km. 3. While we’re talking ‘longest’, here’s another record: Canada has the world’s longest coastline at 202,080 km. 4. A bear cub named Winnipeg was exported from Canada to the London Zoo in 1915. A little boy named Christopher Robin Milne loved to visit Winnipeg, or Winnie for short. His love for the bear cub inspired the stories written by his father, A.A. Milne, about Winnie-the-Pooh 5. The Canadian motto, A Mari Usque ad Mare, means “From sea to sea.” 6. Toronto’s Rogers Centre, formerly known as the SkyDome, is home to the largest Sony big screen in the world, measuring 10 m x 33.6 m. 7. The Blackberry Smartphone was developed in Ontario, at Research In Motion’s Waterloo offices. 8. The Big Nickel in Sudbury, Ontario is the world’s largest coin. It is a huge reproduction of a 1951 Canadian nickel and measures nine meters in diameter. 9. Canada has twice been invaded by the USA, first in 1775 and again in 1812. 10. Canada holds the record for the most gold medals ever won at the Winter Olympics, taking 14 Golds at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. 11. Canada was named through a misunderstanding. When Jaques Cartier, a French explorer, came to the new world, he met with local Natives who invited them to their ‘kanata’ (the word for ‘village’). The party mistakenly thought the name of the country was “Kanata” or Canada. 12. The Mounted Police was formed in 1873, with nine officers. In 1920, the group merged with the Dominion Police to become the famous Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which today has close to 30 000 members. 13. Canada is home to approximately 55,000 different species of insects. 14. Montreal is home to many beautiful churches and is often called The City of Saints or City of a Hundred Bell Towers. 15. Ontario is believed to be home to the world’s smallest jail, which measures only 24.3 sq. metres.

JULY 2 & 9, 2017

HUMANITARIAN RELIEF AFRICA – FAMINE RELIEF

The Archdiocese of Toronto joins the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and faith communities across Canada in launching a joint appeal, entitled Pray-Give-Speak, in response to desperate food crises in South Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia. The United Nations has confirmed that South Sudan has 100,000 people in famine conditions. Reports suggest a total of 20 million people are on the brink of starvation in the region. A declaration of famine has not been made by UN agencies since July 2011 when some 260,000 people died in Somalia – half of them children under the age of five. The world must not let those horrors be repeated. Those wishing to help through a financial contribution may do so in the following ways: Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website By phone through the Development Office: 416-934-

3411 Through the parish, cheques payable to: St. Jerome’s Parish – African Famine

R.C.I.A - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process for adults seeking a personal relationship with Christ and membership in the Catholic Church. It is a journey of faith in preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation. We also prepare baptized Catholics who have not received First Communion and Confirmation for these Sacraments. If you know of anyone inquiring about the Catholic faith, please call the parish office at 905-455-4260 or speak directly with Fr. Jan.

PROVIDE-A-MEAL PROGRAM

Good Shepherd Centre Thank you to all parishioners that provide a meal to the Good Shepherd Centre. This month we donated 28 casseroles. The next

pick-up date will be July 7th. Please drop-off your casseroles before 10:00 a.m. and place it in the freezer in the Social Hall.

Sunday, August 27th

Remember to mark your calendars! Our Annual Parish BBQ will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2017 after the 12:00 Noon Mass. We are looking for talented parishioners who would like to participate in our entertainment. If interested, please contact the Parish Office, leave your name/phone number. See you there!

SUMMER ATTIRE

As we enter the summer months and vacation time, we are all grateful for a time of rest and relaxation. The coming months might best be characterized as “casual”. However, we respectfully ask that all parishioners make an effort to dress appropriately for the Sunday Eucharist. Beach and gym attire e.g. tank tops, low cut blouses, leggings, yoga pants, short skirts, shorts, flip-flops etc. are not appropriate for Holy Mass. Our respect for the Lord and our fellow parishioners demands that we dress appropriately.

UPDATING OUR PARISH DATABASE In order to better serve your ministry needs, our parishioner registration list needs to be updated with your current contact information, including mailing address, email address and contact number. If you have recently moved,

have changed your contact number, wish to provide your email address or if you would like to formerly register and begin using offertory envelopes, please contact the parish office with your new information at 905-455-4260, email at [email protected]. or complete a parishioner registration form located in the bookcase by the parish office.

Thank you for your cooperation Next parish bulletin will be printed on July 16th
