Skeletal System
Skeletal System- humans have 206 bones
Four main functions: 1) protection - eg: - skull protects brain - ribs protect heart & lungs
Skeletal System
2. Making blood-cells - large bones produce blood
cells
Skeletal System
3. stores minerals • stores calcium & phosphorus • keeps bones strong
Skeletal System
4. Support for Muscles - muscles need to attach to bones
for movement (tendons connect)
Skeletal Systemcartilage
Skeletal System
cartilage - connective tissue - reduce friction at joints
Skeletal System
joint - any place where 2 or more bones meet
There are 5 joints main joints: 1. immovable joints - plates of skull
Skeletal System
2. Hinge- move one direction

Skeletal System
3. Pivot -rotation movement
!15
Skeletal System
4. ball & socket - able to move in all directions
!17
Skeletal System
5. gliding- move hands and feet
!19
Skeletal System
ligament - connective tissue that holds bones together
tendon - connective tissue that connects bones & muscles
To prepare
• groups of 3 • carefully dissect the owl pellet (These little
bones are fragile!!!) • use a little water to help • SORT bones into different petri plates
