AllFiber-To-The-Homearchitecturesshareafundamentalelement-theassignmentofthephysicalnetworkconnectionfromthesubscribertotheserving location.Theassignmentof thisphysicalconnectivity reliesupon thephysical inventory for information suchas subscriber locationandavailability of infrastructure. It is in support of this process that Smallworld Physical ResourceAssignment (fully integratedwith the restof theOSS\BSS)candeliversignificantbenefitswhichenable“flowthrough”provisioning–theabilitytoseamlesslyqualifyifacustomercanbeconnected,assignnetworkandinitiatefieldactivities.

SmallworldPhysicalResourceAssignmentautomates theassignmentofphysical inventory toaservicerequest–whether that is fromwithin theoperator’sownbusinessor froma thirdpartyprovider. When a request is received Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment identifies thecustomerlocation(orifthisisnotavailableyettheclosestnetworkterminal)andthendeterminesthephysicalpathupstreamfromthatpointbacktoamainservinglocation, whichcouldbeastreetcabinetoracentraloffice.

DriversforChangeInordertorealizethevisionofanextgenerationnetworkanddelivernewservicesandgrowthesubscriberbasetoreturnahealthyprofittoshareholders, telecommunicationserviceprovidersneedtofocusonall aspectsof theiroperations. This includes twovitalbusinessprocesses –networkengineeringand service fulfillment. Bothareunderpinnedbytheneedforaccuratenetworkinventorythatensuresthataservicereadynetworkisinplacetosupportcustomerdemandandthatnewservicescanbeprovisionedinacost-effectivemanner.

This is becoming increasingly critical in the separated operatingmodelthatisbeginningtobeadoptedinmanypartsoftheworld.Inthismodelthetraditionalincumbentserviceproviderisseparatedintodifferent companies, typically a network company and an operating company. Alternatively entirely new telecommunication providersarebeingcreatedtosupportcreationofnewFTTHnetworks.Withinsuchanoperatingmodelthenetworkcompany’sresponsibilityistoprovideaphysicalpathtoenabletheoperatingcompanytoprovideserviceon-topofthisphysicalpath.

It is absolutely critical that the OSS are sufficiently separated toensure that all processes operate independently. For examplephysicalassignmentcannotbeentwinedwithorderhandling, logicalserviceprovisioningandserviceactivation, aswasoftenthecaseinmanylegacysolutions.

FTTHNetworkSupportSmallworld Physical Resource Assignment is currently focused on supporting the fibre access networks commonly used in FTTHnetworks.Thetypesofnetworkarchitecturesandscenariossupportedareshownbelow.

Supporting OSS transformationsSmallworld Physical Resource Assignment can also support migration from legacyprovisioningsystemsbyprovidingacanonical sourceforallphysicalnetworkrelatedprovisioningenquiries. InmostOSStransformationprojectsitwillbenecessarytohaveboththeoldandthenewprovisioningsystemsoperatinginparallel.Commonlyanewsystem is deployed initially to support a new technology deployment whiletheoldsystemcontinuestosupporttheexistingnetworkwithaplan tomigrate theoldsystemto thenew in time. However it isvitalthatallsystemscanoperateagainstasingleviewofthephysicalnetwork, without this inaccurate provisioning will result with theknock-oneffectoflossofrevenuethroughfailedservicedelivery.
