Message from our President Spring has sprung, and now it is time to think about Cars & Coffee, DE’s, and Saturday drives. Actually, did winter ever come? The weather has been pretty mild which is a good reason to live in the South. Dan Martin and the board have been working hard to bring you opportunities to join us and other Porsche-philes for car events which are also great people meeting events. We certainly hope you will come out and join us for any or all of our events. Dan reports 28 members went on the drive to Bowling Green to tour the Corvette Museum. That is great participation and it was a bright sunny day as well. We see lots of 911’s, Boxsters, etc at our events, but not many Cayenne’s and Panamera’s. We welcome all Porsche cars, even 4-door models! A few of us participate in DE’s at Barber, Road Atlanta, Memphis, VIR and soon the new Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP). This is not a sport reserved only for guys with racing cars decked out with roll bars, racing slicks, etc, but is open to everyone who wants to enjoy their car on a high speed track. If you are a beginner at this, you will receive classroom instruction and will have an instructor with you and your car at all times. After a number of DE’s when your instructor is comfortable with you handling your car safely on the track, you will get signed off for solo and continue to advance as your driving skills improve.

This is a great sport and a lot of fun which I enjoy 3 or 4 times per year. There are a lot of us that travel to the tracks together for a week-end of fun and hang out in the pits, so consider joining us this year. These cars are built for fun and speed, so come out and enjoy the thrill! Don’t miss our next club meeting on March 13 at Cozymel’s Cool Springs and the first Cars & Coffee on March 24. I am sure Dan has more events planned so let him or me know about a great place to take a drive, have lunch, or whatever. We hope to do an overnight trip to Tail of the Dragon later this year, and whatever else sounds like fun with our cars and of course our Musik-Stadt friends. Come join us!

SPECIAL EVENT: “Conversations with Derek Bell” March 21st @ 6:30pm, Porsche of Nashville

Join us for a special evening with Derek Bell at Porsche of Nashville. Derek Bell is a former racing driver from England who was extremely successful in sports car racing, winning five times at Le Mans where he drove for a number of racing teams including Porsche, Rothmans Porsche Joest Porsche Racing, Gulf Racing, and Scuderia Ferrari. He also raced in Formula One for Ferrari and a number of other teams. He has been described by fellow racer Hans-Joachim Stuck as one of the most liked drivers of his generation.

Bell was one of many drivers to take part in the filming of Le Mans (1970) starring Steve McQueen. Bell had a lucky escape during the making of the film. The Ferrari 512 he was driving suddenly caught fire whilst getting into position for a take. He managed to get out of the car just before it was engulfed in flames and suffered minor burns. Bell was also a runner in the 1970 European Formula 2 Championship driving a March.

He won two World Sportscar Championship titles in 1985-86, the 24 Hours of Daytona three times in 1986-87 and 1989 and Le Mans five times in 1975, 1981, 1982, 1986, and 1987. Bell mostly teamed with Jacky Ickx in one of the Porsche 936, 956 and 962 models. Ickx/Bell is nowadays considered as one of the most famous pairings in motorsport history.

Bell was hired to consult for the Bentley team in 2001, helping them to

win Le Mans two years later. He now splits his time between his home

and Bentley dealership in Naples FL and his home in the UK,

commentates on Formula One races, and drives in historic events, as

well as performing an ambassadorial role for Porsche. His son, Justin

Bell is also a racer, and a commentator for Speed Channel.

I’ve owned sports cars for all of my driving life. My first car was a 1954 Austin Healey 100-4 that never

really ran. Since then I’ve had everything from a MG Midget to a Corvette, but this is my first Porsche.

In the early seventies I raced Midgets in SCCA H Production and moved up to Mazda RX7s after that. I

took a hiatus from racing in the mid-eighties to become a slave to a house, raise my family, start a

business and move to Nashville. In the mid-nineties I picked it up again running a Miata in the southeast

region SCCA with some success, two regional championships and two track records. I moved to BMW M3s

after the Miata, and finally to the 997 C2S I have now. The one thing they have all had in common, less the

Porsche, is a front engine rear wheel drive configuration.

The reason it has taken me so long to move to a 911 is that I have always been afraid of them. Historically,

my driving style is diametrically opposed to the method needed to drive 911s. I’d come into corners hot

and throttle steer through them. If I was carrying too much speed, which is most of the time, I’d back out

of the throttle and the car would correct. This doesn’t work in a 911. I’m older now, a bit more cautious,

and finding that a 911 is a blast on a racetrack, even if I have to rethink the way I drive.

Last fall John Beasley and I bought one of Matt Shaw’s Porsche 968s that we have been tracking at DE

events though out the South. Front engine rear drive ah… I’m home again.

ROAD TRIP

Musik Stadt Tours Corvette

Museum! By: Dan Martin, Events Chairman Fifteen Musik Stadt Porsches rolled north to Bowling Green on a beautiful Saturday morning to be treated to a fantastic guided tour of the National Corvette Museum. Listen all you gearheads, if you didn’t make out tour on February 25th you really missed a great opportunity. We were treated to a personal guided tour by Rok Linkov, Events Manager for the NCM. Rok is a man who loves his work at the NCM. He has a rich history in the automotive industry, runs performance driver training schools, has been a racer and seems to know everybody in the industry. Especially true if they ever had any input into the development of the Corvette. As he guided us through the museum it was also clear that Rok knows Corvette history and the cast of characters that brought Corvette into the forefront of American performance cars. He’s a perfect fit for the job of Events Manager of NCM. The museum is of course the showplace for Corvette heritage. Everything from early ‘50s ‘vettes, to the “mid-years”, to the latest incredible ZR1s. The new ZR1s have 638 hp and 608 ft lbs of torque. Starting MSRP is $111,600. Sounds good huh? Rok also showed us the rarest Corvette. It’s a 1983 Corvette that is the only 1983 model on the planet. What? He explained that GM made the first fifty 1983 Corvettes and they were so horrible that the company ordered them to be destroyed. So they demolished 49

of them and never built another ’83 model. But they kept one example and it’s on display at the NCM. We were also able to privately use the GM driving simulators which are the only ones of their kind in the U.S. These weren’t racing simulators but instead demonstrate the effects of speed on braking and driving on snow covered roads. Duncan Sutphen and Donna Martin hopped into the simulators to give it a go and did us proud. Donna had to have set a new speed record. There’s no way anyone could have ever driven more slowly, or carefully, than she did. Guess she didn’t want to damage the simulator. Now if you’ve been to the museum in the past go again. I went years ago and it has completely changed. One of the great things about the cars displayed is that the majority are on loan from privateers. That keeps the inventory rotating and fresh. This makes return visits to NCM a interesting. After lunch at the museum’s “Corvette Cafe” we saddled up and took a backroads tour east to Barren River State Park. A great little series of technical roads that all enjoyed. Again thanks to Roc. He already had directions with turns and mileages included. This man is the greatest. The state park looked great. A large lake, a golf course, cabins, stables, a motel and restaurant that we heard had great food. All in all it was a terrific day. Why don’t you make our next tour?

The seventh annual Winterfest hosted by the TN region was held Feb.

3rd, 4th, and 5th at the historic Chattanooga Choo-Choo in downtown

Chattanooga. If you missed it you missed a great weekend which

included a tri-cross, concours, scenic drive through the mountains of

Chattanooga, RC auto cross, and the amazing hospitality of the TN

region.

Musik-Stadt made their presence known by

taking home several trophies in the events. In

the Tri-Cross Doug Foster took 1st in the

men’s category while Lynn Gratkowski took

3rd in the women’s. Anna Foster won 1st place

in the RC auto cross. Lynn won 1st place in the

women’s tech quiz (?????). In the Concours

Michael Kennedy’s 2003 Boxster took 2nd in

lite judging while Greg’s 928S took home 2nd

place in the full Councours.

A big THANK YOU to all of the participating members from Musik-Stadt, especially

the new members, it was great to see our region so well represented. An even bigger

THANK YOU goes out to all of the members of the TN region who work so hard to host

this great event (and thank you for no snow this year also). Next year may see a new

venue for Winterfest. Perhaps at the VW plant which could include an auto cross, but

wherever it is held I am sure old friends will catch up on the past year, new friends will

be made, and a stellar time will be had by all. Soooooooo don’t miss it!

On Thursday, February 9, 2012 Porsche of Nashville unveiled the new 2012

The evening also raised money for the Andrew Jackson Youth Camp, a most

worthy cause to help Nashville's children.

The North American International Auto Show By Joel Questel

January. You get cold just saying it. Add Detroit to that

thought and it can be downright depressing. Then again, if you

are going to make your annual journey to the house of the

Automotive God, to the hallowed Cobo Hall, the home of the

North American International Auto Show, does it really matter

where you are? Yes, there are nicer places than Detroit to have

a major auto show but there is no show better than the one

that Detroit hosts and this year was no exception.

My strategy was to go on a weekday in order to avoid the

crowds. It really isn’t worth going on a weekend or a holiday

because the crowds tend to be so large that you can’t get close

enough to the cars to take even mediocre pictures. Going on a

Wednesday has always seemed to work well for me… until this

year. Either the great majority of Michiganders are

unemployed or on holiday for the show, as it was a full house. I

think that bodes well for the industry as a whole – the fact that

there were so many people out and about checking out all of

the cars.

When I enter the show, as a result of my being a creature of

habit, I always make a hard left and head to the

Audi/Mercedes/BMW corner in the front left side of the hall.

Audi always has a new R8 variant and this year was showing off

the new A7 and A8. Mercedes-Benz had a great tribute section

in their booth with a 1952 300 SL W194 racecar. It was there to

highlight the new SL, which is a striking car and appears to be a

worthy competitor to the new 6-series.

Another vehicle in the MB booth that might get some

consideration from BMW drivers is the E350 Sport Wagon; only

because BMW still does not offer a 5-series wagon for US

drivers. Last year I rented an E-series turbo-diesel for 2 weeks

while tooling around Italy. While it wasn’t exactly the driver’s

car that a BMW is, or that my Audi Avant wagon was, it was a

fine car that had a lot of comfort and utility to it while not

having any problems keeping up with traffic on the Autostrade.

The heart of the BMW stand was a bevy of new products; the 3-

series sedans, the X5 and the ActiveHybrid 5-series. The new

M5 was also there but I had seen that previously at the LA show

back in November and I had too much ground to cover at Cobo

to go and look at it again. Cont’d next page

The new 3-series is noticeably larger than the current 3 which may or may not be a bad thing depending

on which seat you are sitting in. It is a good-looking car but for me fails to fire up any emotion. Maybe

that’s because it is a sedan and I need to see it in a coupe; I’ll hold my judgment. I still haven’t gotten the

3-series trim levels all figured out but as best I can tell, most of the new 3’s on the floor had the ‘Sport’

trim level package, which is a little busy but very sharp looking.

I didn’t spend much time looking at the latest X5 mostly because SUV’s don’t really get my motor

running. I will say, it certainly is one very attractive looking SUV. As it needs to be; it has got some steady

competitors that are quite lookers themselves. Did I mention the ActiveHybrid 5-series? Good, enough

said.

Also in the BMW booth, were the i3 and i8 concept cars. These cars are amazing to see in person,

especially when you realize that they are so close to being production-ready. Totally amazing vehicles; I

can only hope that they remain drivers cars in the process.

There is a lot more to the show than just the front corner of the hall. Leaving the BMW booth, the next

big and surprisingly busy booth was hosted by VW. Who would have thought that a VW booth would

have been packed out in Detroit? They really do build those things here now don’t they?

VW had a great display of products including a Jetta TDI wagon. Having owned a ’06 Jetta TDI for about

80K miles, I loved that VW diesel; to have it in a wagon would be the best of both worlds. Doesn’t BMW

have a small wagon and a diesel engine?

Of course the Passat was the star of the booth and for good reason. It is an impressive car to put up

against the midsize selections from GM and Ford. This year, everyone offers something new in this price

and size segment so everything is pretty much state of the art within this category.

The new Malibu from Chevy, the new Fusion from Ford and the new Dart from Chrysler/Fiat

are all going to make renting cars fun again!

Far and away, the busiest booth at the show was the Ford booth. No more Mercury to clutter things up

and a small carve out for Lincoln; the Ford booth was jammed and jamming. Half of the Ford stand was

filled with cars and the other half featured interactive displays that were reminiscent of a video arcade

from childhood. Ford seems to have figured out how to get the youth segment to its area of the show

and keep them there.

Look for a slew of newly designed Ford products this coming year with an all-new Escape that looks very

sharp. Then there is the new Fusion which looks like the love child of an Aston Marin with the back end of

I don’t know what, but whatever it was, she wasn’t ugly. This car has gone up-scale big time with

interiors that rival cars costing significantly more.

There were all of the variations of the Mustang as well as 2 of the new Shelby GT500 models at 650hp for

about 50 large. I know it’s a Mustang, but 65-hp for fifty grand? Also the Boss 302 is back for 2013 again

with the Laguna Seca package and the TrakKey package for weekend racing. Someone at Ford is

thinking!

The Chrysler stand was also packed but more so with product than with people. The standout there was

the new Dart; a very nice midsize package that is much more compelling than the Chrysler 200 it

replaces. The amazing thing about all of the midsize packages is what you get for a moderate amount of

money. A budget of $24-$30K gets you a lot of choices in the world of domestic cars, including the VW

I can’t finish without mentioning Cadillac. That CTS-V

Wagon is SWEET! Sorry, but it is. The new ATS is

going to steal some market share – from which brand

remains to be seen but needless to say, they did a nice

job on it. No more of the hard corners and edges that

seemed to age poorly on the CTS. It has nice curved

edges, smooth at the corners with long vertical edges

that create a presence for a smaller car in this

segment. Hopefully it will be Lexus, Infiniti and MB

that it steals from and not BMW/Audi.

Somehow I skipped over the Porsche stand; God

please forgive me. I stopped and bowed at the feet of

the new 911 and 911 Cabrio. I mean really, if you are

going to the house of the Automotive God, you might

as well take a trip to the alter. So there I was, kneeling

at the foot of the new 911 (to take a picture, but still

kneeling). I admit it; I am bias, but you might be too

after seeing this magnificent automobile up close and

personal. All the good stuff got better – the

interior, the proportions. Yes, the size did go up but

the weight went down; how do they do that?

This year’s show (other than an aging Cobo Hall) was

truly a 10, especially compared to the past sever years.

My photo highlight was getting my picture taken with

the Hamsters from the Kia Soul commercial; I love

those guys!

If you are interested in going to the NAIAS it is fairly

easy to get to and from Detroit in a day from

Nashville. Both Delta and Southwest have direct

flights to Detroit. From Detroit Metro Airport to Cobo

Hall is about a 45-minute drive and there is plenty of

parking available. The show costs $12 and parking is

Franchitti’s Driving Impression of the Porsche 917

24 at Daytona was an amazing weekend. Getting to see Porsche take the top three spots in GT was one of Dario’s favorite moments, and the rest of 2012 will have to work hard to beat it. As amazing as the race was, his personal favorite moment of the weekend was the “24 minutes of Daytona” on Saturday morning. The 2012 iteration marked the 50th anniversary of the Floridian endurance race. To commemorate the anniversary, Grand Am and the track worked in tandem to bring back a large contingent of the overall winners from the previous 50 years to compete in a short vintage race event on the high banks of the track. The car that Dario immediately gravitated toward was the 1970 victor, a Gulf-Wyer 917 KurzHeck. As it turns out, Dario Franchitti was driving the car in the race, and he got the opportunity to sit down for a few minutes between the 24 minutes and the 24 hour to chat; about the car, the upcoming race, and his season prospects in IndyCar . Yeah, it was… um, well it was incredible. It’s one of those cars that’s on my short list of cars to drive, so to get to do it here, today at Daytona was very exciting. It’s everything I thought it would be. You know, it’s a lot of…um, a lot of power. It handles quite nicely. Fantastic seating position. You know, I guess it was… Parts of me were very excited, parts of me were terrified. It’s a pretty intimidating car to drive on the banking. There were times where we weren’t hanging around, so the experience just adds to the respect I already had for the people that drove them.

Porsche Reports Record January Sales

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and the Panamera four-door sports sedan line-up in the United States, today announced January 2012 sales of 2,550 vehicles. The sales compare to 2,400 vehicles sold last year – a 6 percent increase. “We are about to launch the new seventh generation 911 on February 4th and we have a limited supply of Boxster models, which ceased production in 2011 to prepare for changeover to the new model,” said President and CEO, Detlev von Platen. “For these reasons, we are extremely pleased with our January results.” When compared to the prior year, Porsche sold 681 911 models, an increase of 56 percent. Panamera sales were up 16 percent to 703, compared to the same period last year.

Porsche Named Best European Car Brand By JD Power

US car owners award Zuffenhausen sports car

manufacturer top ranking

The results of J.D. Power and Associates’ 2012 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study

have just been released, and there’s plenty of good news for Porsche.

The sports car manufacturer Dr. Ing. h.c. F.

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is the best European car brand. This is borne out by the

current Vehicle Dependability Study 2012 (VDS) unveiled by the prestigious US

market research Institute J.D. Power and Associates. The study focuses on the

vehicles’ long-term quality in the US market. It was based on a poll of more than

31,000 American motorists who have owned their 2009 model year vehicles for

three years. The Porsche 911 – the world-famous icon from the main plant in

Zuffenhausen – is the best vehicle in its segment. The European car plants’

review also gave top slot to the Porsche production plant in Stuttgart for the long

term quality of its sports cars. And the Porsche brand achieved its best score in

the VDS for freedom from errors. That makes the overall result for long term

quality the best score yet awarded by J.D. Power.

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart's new sports car in the SUV segment has been given

the name Macan. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines

suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics – core characteristics of the new off-road car.

"The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine

Porsche", said Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. "The

name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects

and evoke positive associations."

As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports

car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the Macan to emulate the

success of the Cayenne. The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013. To

that end, the site in this city in Saxony is being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant

including body assembly line and paint shop - with 500 million euro of investment one of the

biggest building projects in Porsche's corporate history. In the medium-term, the sports car

manufacturer will be creating more than 1,000 new jobs here.

2012 911 Carrera and Carrera S are ready to conquer the hearts and minds of sports car enthusiasts

ATLANTA – February 6, 2012 – Porsche Cars North America today announced that the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S models have arrived in Porsche showrooms around the country. The latest generation of the iconic Porsche 911 is on-sale now.

Following its media introduction last fall, journalists world-wide have titled this latest 911 as the best yet. All early indicators point to it remaining every bit the icon it has been since its 1964 debut.

“Whether this will be a customer’s first or just their latest Porsche 911, it’s going to be the most invigorating ownership experience yet,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “The 911 Carrera and Carrera S are the ultimate choices for drivers who want the fun and excitement of a true benchmark-setting sports car week in and week out, not just for show or play during the weekends.”

For 2012, the 911 has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The newest incarnation applies singular balance to the priorities of a new era, preserving the classic 911 lines, yet revisiting every inch for advances in power and fuel economy. While still instantly recognizable as a Porsche 911 at a glance, 90 percent of the 2012 911’s components are either new or fundamentally revised.

Longer, lower, wider, 100 lbs. lighter, faster and more efficient than previous models, the 911 is the perfect blend of modern design, intelligent engineering and performance DNA.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, both new models offer significant performance enhancements. The 2012 911 Carrera is equipped with a new, 350-horsepower, 3.4-liter boxer engine that provides five more horsepower (HP) than the outgoing 3.6-liter engine, while the Carrera S features a 400 HP, 3.8-liter boxer engine—a 15 HP improvement versus its predecessor. The 911 Carrera with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) accelerates from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, while the Carrera S sprints from zero to 60 in a mere 4.1 seconds. That time is reduced even further to 3.9 seconds when equipped with the Sports Chrono Package Plus. Top-track-speeds for the 911 Carrera and Carrera S are 179 and 188 mph, respectively.

As with every generation, the new 911 Carrera continues to raise the bar in both performance and efficiency. This is achieved through systems such as the Automatic Start/Stop function, engine and transmission thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and—in conjunction with PDK—the ability to ‘sail’ or coast. The new electro-mechanical power steering offers the typical Porsche precision and helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

The new 911 Carrera Coupe has a base MSRP of $82,100, and the 911 Carrera S Coupe starts at $96,400 (excluding destination fees).

During these years he learned about cars, how and why they worked, and how they were designed and built. Cars were the natural subject for this budding artist to draw. And draw he did... all through grade school, high school, college and continues today. His versatile style reflects a knowledge of the automobile that permits him to work at numerous levels of detail. But the speed, color and motion of the racing cars are often subjects of his paintings. Steve’s automotive art is balanced with his commercial art done solely on computer. His client list includes The Kroger Company, Superior Label Systems, W/S Packaging, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Panoz Motorsports and Doran Racing.
