General Mee�ng of South Molton U3A will
be held on Tuesday 10th March 2020 at
Filleigh Village Hall, commencing at
10.30am.
Elsewhere in this newsle� er you will see
details of the Cons�tu�onal changes to the
electoral procedures that were discussed at
the 2019 AGM which have been formulated
and consulted upon by the Commi� ee
during the year. These changes will be put
forward for formal approval at the 2020
AGM. Also shown is a change that we are
required to make by the U3a Na�onal Office
in order to align our Cons�tu�on with new
Charity Commission rules.
If anyone has any further mo�ons they
would like to put forward for discussion at
the AGM, about either the cons�tu�on or
finances, then please forward them in
wri�ng to reach me no later than February
11th 2020.

This year we are looking for members to join
us on the commi� ee. It is not an onerous
task - we usually only meet once a month
and it’s a chance to put your ideas forward
and help us take our U3A group in to the
future. In becoming a commi� ee member

Molton U3A .

members who have joined our group in the
last year or so and have a vision of how your
ideas could help take the our U3A group

Meet at 9.45am in South Molton Car Park.
This month we will do a 4-mile walk from
South Molton up Gunswell Lane to Hill
Village (Chipboard Factory) and back
through Fordown Farm. This is a fairly easy
walk with just one short sharp uphill but it
does have some s�les.
My thanks to John Probert who very kindly led the 4 mile
walk in December from South Molton down to the Mole,
up over Windwhistle and along Folly Lane to the old
railway bridge, around past White Chapel and Rawstone to
Bish Mill and back. I was unable to lead the walk but John
was joined by eight others who all enjoyed the walk.

We looked at adult fic�on, young adult fantasy fic�on and
non-fic�on last �me so quite a range there. A couple of us
decided to read Highsmith's 'Strangers on a Train' a�er

Thursday 13th February 2020 at 2.00pm. West Buckland School are anxious to be more in touch with
their community and have invited us to see their Year 5 & 6 (10-11year olds) perform HOOK and PETER
PAN – HOW IT ALL BEGAN; a musical prequel to the story we all know so well. There is no cost and they
will help with transport should we require it. Their theatre hall, however, is up a fine marble staircase, plenty of banisters, but
nonetheless upstairs. If you would like to go, just give me your name in the usual way and I will organise our visit.
Thursday 20th February 2020. 'The Taming of the Shrew'A ma�nee performance of the RSC produc�on of at Plymouth.
Tickets are £28.00 plus transport costs which will depend on numbers. If you have expressed a desire to a� end this

2. OBJECTS & POWERS2.1 OBJECTS
The Objects of the U3A are:
i) the advancement of educa�on and, in par�cular, the educa�on of older people and those who are re�red from full
�me work, by all means including ac�vi�es conducive to learning and to personal development, in South Molton
and its surrounding locality.
ii) the provision of facili�es for leisure �me and recrea�onal ac�vi�es with the object of improving the condi�ons of life
for the above persons in the interest of their social welfare, through membership, of leisure �me and recrea�onal
ac�vi�es with the object of facilita�ng Clause 2.1.ii above.
4. MANAGEMENT4.1 The management of the U3A shall be vested in a Commi� ee consis�ng of the members whose duty it shall be to carry
out its general policy and to provide for the administra�on, management and control of the affairs and property of the
U3A.
i) The Commi� ee shall consist of at least five and not more than ten members (excluding those who are co-opted)
including the principal officers (Chairman, Business Secretary, Treasurer and MembershipVice-Chairman,
Secretary). The Principal officers shall be appointed by the Commi� ee at their first mee�ng.
ii) Not more than two (2) ordinary members may be co-opted to the Commi� ee: they shall have full vo�ng rights and
their term of office shall expire at the next following Annual General Mee�ng.
iii) Persons who need not be members may be invited by the Commi� ee to serve because of their special exper�se;
they shall not have vo�ng rights and their term of service shall expire at the next following Annual General Mee�ng
4.2 The elec�on of the Commi� ee shall be held at the Annual General Mee�ngmembers of Principal Officers and Members
of the U3A. Nomina�ons duly agreed by the nominee shall be proposed and secondedto the Commi� ee for each post
and delivered in wri�ng to the Secretary at a date specified by the Commi� ee. The newly elected Principal Officers and
Commi� ee shall take office at the conclusion of the Annual General Mee�ng.Members
i) The Principal Officers and Commi� ee Members shall be fully paid up Members of South Molton U3A and shall be
elected annually from amongst the Members at each AGM.
ii) , shall serve for a period ofThe Principal Officers and Commi� ee Members Commi� ee members, including officers
three (3) years but may then stand for re-elec�on if they so wish. The Chairman shall serve for aone year maximum
period of three (3) years and must then stand down but may seek re-elec�on to the commi� ee. A re�ring Chairman
may be re-elected as Chairman a�er an intervening period of at least one (1) year.
iii) Commi� ee Members may resign office by giving not less than twenty-one (21) days no�ce in wri�ng to the Secretary
or the Chairman. The Commi� ee has power to fill casual vacancies from the membership. Such an appointee shall
complete the term of service of the member he or she is replacing and shall be eligible for re-elec�on.
iv) At Commi� ee mee�ngs ma� ers shall be decided by a simple majority of votes of Commi� ee members present. In
the case of an equality of votes the Chairman shall have a second or cas�ng vote.
v) The quorum for any Commi� ee mee�ng shall be three (3) or one third of the Commi� ee whichever is the greater.

Annual General Mee�ng 2020 - Proposed changes to South Molton U3A Cons�tu�on.
We are required to remove by the U3A Na�onal Office to sa�sfy new Charity Commission rules.OBJECTS Clause 2.1.ii
At the Annual General Mee�ng in March 2019 discussions took place regarding the elec�on and terms of office of the
Principal Officers and Commi� ee Members. At that AGM it was decided that the Commi� ee should look in to the
changes to the Cons�tu�on that would be required to facilitate the elec�on of the Principal Officers on an annual basis.
The extract shown below is the result of those Commi� ee conclusions and recommenda�ons. We have also consulted
outside of the Commi� ee as was promised at that AGM. The Commi� ee was also asked to publish the proposed changes
in the newsle� er which we do here.
The proposed changes are shown in colour - red (struck out) text is proposed for removal, green text is proposed for
inclusion and purple text (Clause 4.2.vi) is moved for the sake of clarity.
No changes to the Cons�tu�on are proposed by the Commi� ee other than those shown below.
