HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE
NUMBERS The holiday season gener-ates a lot of waste, and many things contribute to this ex-cess of trash this time of year.
• Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfi lls after the holi-day season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate receptacles.
• Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recy-cling paper or looking for reusable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.
• Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each
year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to re-cycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of being sent to a landfi ll. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and planting it after the holidays.
• Nearly 2.65 billion Christ-mas cards are sold and ex-changed each year in the United States alone. This
many cards can fi ll a football fi eld 10 stories high. One less card sent per person can save roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper.
• If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

DID YOU KNOW?
Though there is no offi cial data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for chil-dren of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” fi gure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to
the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the fi rst Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up
on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincar-nated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to in-spire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduc-tion of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

Parents often fi nd them-selves waiting in long lines to snag the hottest toys for children’s holiday gifts. Shoppers arrive at retail stores in droves to grab the newest video game con-soles or must-have dolls or action fi gures.
From Cabbage Patch Dolls of the 1980s to the Elmo craze of the 1990s, every genera-tion seems to have its own “must-have” holiday gift. This year, holiday shoppers may want to start shopping early if they hope to land any of the following items that fi gure to be this year’s hot toys.
• “Frozen”-themed toys: Mega-retailer Walmart pre-dicts that toys inspired by the smash hit fi lm “Frozen” will continue to be hot com-modities this holiday season. To meet demand, the retailer already is stocking up on the popular characters and oth-er products banking on the popularity of the fi lm. If the special girl in your life is still enamored with all things “Frozen,” it’s a smart bet to start your holiday buying early this year.• “Hunger Games” athletic items: Fans of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss’ prowess with a bow and arrow. Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls
and boys testing their ar-chery skills.• Beats by Dr. Dre: Music-lov-ers still consider these head-phones must-have items. They’re especially prevalent among the teen market. Available in a variety of col-ors, users can coordinate their Beats headphones with their clothing or accessories.
• Lego Minecraft: It was only a matter of time before Lego got in on the action of one of the hottest games to sweep the Internet and video game console world. Minecraft is a digital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft enthu-siasts can recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego
versions. The holiday season is on the horizon, and it’s never too early to begin shopping for the toys and games experts predict will be this year’s must-have items.

Take the advice from this teenager whose life has nev-er been the same. For more information, call 899-7777.
As Christianity spread, St. Nicholas’ image began to change. Russia’s Dedt Moroz, or
Father Ice and the Norse god Odin and even the old Roman deity Saturn had white beards and
the power to fly through the air or magically appear. As the centuries ground along, these
attributes were melded with the myths surrounding the good St. Nicholas. Communication
back then wasn’t what it is today so there were many different versions of St. Nicholas.
In many of these a punisher known variously as Knecht Rupert, Ru Claus, Pelznickel,
Aschenklaus and Black Pete accompanied the good saint. This sinister sidekick was on
the lookout for children that misbehaved. Legend has it that Black Pete would abduct bad
children or (more often) leave a birch switch behind as a hint of their fate if the bad behavior
continued. Most often, St. Nicholas intervened, saving even naughty children from Black
Pete, teaching them that they could earn another chance if they would mend their ways.
Eventually the evil accomplice was dropped leaving it up to St. Nicholas to be the sole judge of
whether a child was “naughty or nice” and the birch switch was replaced with a lump of coal.
So, just prior to his journey across the Atlantic to the New World, St. Nicholas had become a red
robed, white bearded figure who flew on a white horse to deliver gifts to good children overnight
during the Christmas Holy Days. In the early days of New York, the Dutch name “Sante Klaus”
was adopted by more recent English colonists as “Santa Claus”. The name stuck and immigrants
of many backgrounds adopted him and carried his name west as America was explored.
Washington Irving is credited with widening Santa Claus’ popularity and putting him
in a cart that flew through the air. The writings of Irving were certainly known by Henry
Livingston who penned the famous poem “An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas” that he
recited to his children one Christmas. Later, in 1822, the poem was published for the first time
in the Troy Sentinel. A professor of divinity, Dr Clement Moore, claimed authorship and a
controversy rages to this day over who actually wrote the poem. Regardless, the poem became
quite popular and did wonders for the reputation of Santa Claus. It gave us a sleigh pulled by
reindeer that all had names and reinforced the idea that Santa entered through the chimney. The
bishop’s robes were gone; replaced by a furry suit. Santa was now jolly and corpulent but small.
This thoroughly American rendition of St Nicholas was hugely popular and the
poem was (and is still) repeated every Christmas Eve in nearly every American home.
During the dark days of the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly published numerous stories about
Santa Claus illustrated by a German immigrant, Thomas Nast. The characteristics Santa
Claus were no longer left up to the imagination. Nast’s illustrations unified and solidified
popular ideas of what Santa looked like and how he acted. He was a “Jolly Old Elf”.
Today we think of Santa Claus as a much larger personage. This came about through an
advertising campaign conducted during the early days of popular color publications. The Coca-
Cola Company sponsored an ad campaign during Prohibition that featured Santa as a larger
version of the elf. Billboards and magazine images of this new Santa blazed their way into
the popular consciousness and have remained ever since. Santa’s favorite reindeer Rudolph
was introduced through another popular ad campaign staged by Montgomery Ward in 1939.
Through all the changes St. Nick has undergone, he remains in our hearts as our
companion at Christmas. Whether Saint or Santa, we can count on him to remind
us that Christmas is a time for giving and for children. Every effort must be made
to make a magical visit possible for every child.... especially the less fortunate.
Above all else, this is the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Please, give him a hand.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

WINTER PREP CHECKLIST
Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now.• Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinfl ated, you lose fuel effi ciency, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.• Those who live in particu-larly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to pro-vide more traction and pro-tection than sneakers, so should you equip your vehi-cle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.• Check on the status of your battery and its starting power. Cold weather can put more strain on a car bat-tery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most.• Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to a windshield fl uid that is rated for subzero temperatures. Each of these items will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt.• Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if cou-pled with low coolant levels,
can make it diffi cult for the engine to turn over. • Keep jumper cables, a bat-tery booster pack and warn-ing cones in your vehicle. These can come to the res-cue if your battery dies and you’re stranded on the side of the road.
• While you’re stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include
a shovel, sand or cat litter, a fl ashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a blanket. These are good emergency items to have in the event your car breaks down in the winter. You can dig your tires out of a snow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increase traction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for a while awaiting roadside service.• Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completely change the defensive tac-tics needed to navigate the roads. A prepared driver is one who is more likely to avoid accidents and make it home safely.
