Senator Hoar of Massachusetts knewthat the doom of the Republican partywas sealed when he coined his speechon the Phillipine question which hedelivered before the Senate on Tues-

day¬

April 17 1900 and in words thatpoured out his anguish he denouncedImperialism As in days of old thetrumpet of the triumphant march ofBryan and Towno can be heard fromafar like the muttering tempest comingup against the gale soon to burst uponus ufter a brief lull and with a sweep-

ing¬

victory our flag our country ourRepublic will be redeemed from thedespotic rule of tyrants 13ut as theSenator said there is a RepublicanSenate which cannot be changed forthe nest four years unless a few morelike the Senator from Massachusettscan see the folly of their ways and lenda hand to again cast the mantle of jus--

tice and honor upon our Republic

W H Westover our district juilgeis prominently mentioned as good tim-

ber¬

for gubernatorial honors Thejudge bears a good reputation through-out

¬

the northwest and is deserving ofall the honors that the office of gover-

nor¬

affords And his modesty in declining the offers of support made himshould not work against his chancesfor nomination

Chief Justice Fuller decided thatTaylor was not entitled to the seat asGovernor of Jentucky GovernorBeckham is in full charge There wasa jubilee over the result and two thous-

and¬

people marched to the grave of ExGovernor Goebel each wearing a flow-

er¬

McKinley refused to interfere or inany way lend assistance to the Boerenvoys who waited upc 11 him Tuesdayof this week in behall of the Sonth Af

rican Republic They gave him tounderstand before leaving that theyhad friends in America that they werethankful for

In selecting Chas A Tovnefor second place on the ticket the peo ¬

ple of Nebradka will heartily endorethe action of the populist conventionby giving Bryan and Towne the larg-

est¬

vote of any candidates that couldhave been selected

W J Bryan is more popular withthe people of the United btates now

than at any time since he has been be ¬

fore them as a result of his sterlingqualities in denouncing Imperialismand the trusts

No better choice could have beenmade than Mr Towne to act as stan ¬

dard bearer with Bryan the greatestliving statesman in the United States

VINDICATEDWashington D C May 14 1900

I notice two false statements for polili ul purposes going the rounds of theRi jiublican papers which lam informedemanated from a Populist source

rrst That William Neville by some kind ofhocus pocus or legerdemain drew a part of thesalary as congressman which belonged to thewidow of Congressman Greene and kept it forhis own use N

Second That William Neville was a load tocarry in last falls campaign and ran two thou-sand

¬

votes behind Judge Holcomb in the Sixthdistrict

Those two charges being of Populist origin Ideem it proper to answer them and will do so Inthe order named

1 never received one cent of the salary due thelate Congressman Greene nor of that due hiswidow by reason of las death The revisedstatutes of the United States and the rules ofthe House of Representatives fix the salary andallowance to the widow of a deceased congress ¬

man or senator from the time of his death to theend of the term but not to exceed 5000 Ofthis amount Mrs Greene has already received

1250 the other S3750 she will get when thegeneral deficiency appropriation bill carrying itpasses which will be within the next ten days

As to my own salarv I have simply walked utto the counter of the disbursing onlcerstood up-

on¬

the cutsiae of the railing and received tinWact amount due me under the law authorizingpayment to senators and congressmen filling va-

cancies¬

which law was passed and auprovedJuly 12 13C2 and under which Republicans andDemocrats have been paid alike since thatdate 1 atn aale in saying that a Republican dis ¬

bursing officer acting under a law upheld byRepublicans and Democrats alike for thiityeight years does not pay a Populist any moneywhich is not legally due him and which he is notlegally compelled to pay him

as to the charge that 1 was a load to carry inthe campaign and ran two thousand voles be-

hind¬

Judge Holcomb it conies just a little nearer having a gram of trutlrin ii than the otherstatement By relet tuue to the printed abstractof votes published by the secretary of state andincluding Hooker county which was lettout ofthe congressional column as published the factwiii upnear that Judge Holcomb received 4111 lord votes than 1 did in the Sixth district ofwhich we were until residents Considering thewell known popularity ot Judge Holcomu andthe fact lhatmy opponent lived in the districtand Judge Holeonibs did not 1 leel highly Mut ¬

tered by the showing Iiy leaving out Holtcounty where my oppoueiit lived and wheieJudge Hoico nib by reason thereof polled 118

LINCOLN LETTER

Nebraskas popular governor wasquite eagerly sought for and consultedin the deliberations of the national con-

vention¬

at Sioux Falls last week Standup for Nebraska

It is economy that allows the publicbuildings of Nebraska to go on and becompleted under fusion administrationin Nebraska without the rate of taxa-

tion¬

being increased The republicanstealings and practices could not haveaccomplished such wonders -

It looks very much as though the fusiouists would nominate J II Miles ofFalls City for congress in the first andEdgar Howard of Papillion for a simi-

lar¬

position in the Second districtThis will almost insure a solid fusioncongressional delegation from Nebras-ka

¬

during the next two years

Nebraska was represented at theSioux Falls convention by about 200loyal fusionists who carried away withthem a full share of the honors in thedeliberations of that- - grand bodv ofmen who favor government by the peo-

ple

¬

Result National headquarters ofthe Populist party are located in Lin-coln

¬

Let every Nebraskan rejoice asthis is standing up for Nebraska witha tiger

One EjRosewater loaded up the head-

quarters¬

of the Republican state com-

mittee¬

and carted them off to OmahaHe was afraid to trust his short timebedfellow D E Thompson by allow-

ing¬

the headquarters to remain in Lin-

coln¬

W J Bryan has enlarged his frontporch and otherwise improved facilitiesfor addressing large audiences from hisresidence The Populist national com-

mittee¬

has located headquarters in thiscity and several other omens indicatethat Lincoln will be a chief politicalstorm center during the approachingnational campaign These indicationsavi favorable to fusion success in Neb-
