Art Garfunkel—In Close Up
Garfunkel told Rolling Stone magazine two years ago.
His subsequent career was filled not only with music—he has
released 12 solo albums—but a book of poetry, an autobiography,
and he starred in six films. He has won eight Grammys, including a
Lifetime Achievement Award.
Garfunkel also keeps doing what he does best: singing for an
audience. He relishes the opportunity to perform new and classic
material for fans around the world. “I’m a singer who tries to get away
with a lucky job,” he says. “I try to soothe, to lift… that’s my life.”
Growing up, Art Garfunkel’s name might have seemed an unlikely
moniker for a famous singer, even if he did recognize at the age
of 5 that he had a great voice. But when he and his childhood friend
Paul Simon formed the singing duo Simon & Garfunkel in 1963 it
soon became the name of a music megastar. Garfunkel comes to the
Center for a one-night-only solo appearance January 11 to sing some
of his greatest hits from his Simon & Garfunkel catalog and from his
subsequent successful career as a solo artist.
Simon & Garfunkel had a string of Grammy-winning, chart-
topping hits that included “Mrs. Robinson,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The
Sound of Silence,” “The Boxer” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,”
among others. Their Simon & Garfunkel greatest hits collection is one
of the biggest-selling albums ever. Although the duo broke up in 1970,
they occasionally reunited for a concert or tour. In 1990 they were
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Garfunkel], who had very different natures, and found a fusion,”
