to promote technology educa.on, innova.on, job growth and
entrepreneurial new starts. Tech Bloc also works with regional leaders to
enhance San Antonio’s urban livability and improve our city’s [email protected]
as a career des.na.on for crea.ve-‐class workers and entrepreneurs.
Founded on May 19, 2015
Why are we doing this? Below are ideals we know to be true as well as lessons learned from Enrico More6’s book The New Geography of Jobs • As globaliza;on has taken root, America has transi;oned from a manufacturing economy to a
knowledge based economy. Consequently, most job growth in America has occurred in innova.on industries, and most of that growth is rooted in new technology.
• These jobs drive everything else in a city’s economy as each innova;on job creates FIVE tradi;onal
jobs, mostly local service work, from lawyers to mechanics to waiters to teachers. This “mul;plier effect” is vital to understanding modern economic development. This benefits San Antonio’s en;re economy!
• The innova;on jobs (and the 5 that come with them) are clustering in a select number of ci.es.
Innova;on jobs build around other innova;on jobs. • Human capital is the key element to these economies. The jobs go where the people live who make
these high growth companies run -‐ regardless of cost. This is why Silicon Valley and New York con;nue to grow, despite outrageous labor and real estate costs.
• The result is a great divergence: a set of “brain hubs” with robust economies and plen;ful high skilled
jobs which, in turn, fuel the crea;on of more skilled jobs that aUract more skilled workers (all while the 1=5 effect drives addi;onal growth for all). At the other extreme are “Rust Belt” manufacturing ci;es struggling to make the transi;on as they lose legacy jobs and smaller mul;plier effect they had. And then there are the other ci;es, including San Antonio, that “could go either way.”
