DON’T LET YOUR LITTLE HORRORSSPOOK YOU THIS HALLOWE’EN...GHOSTS, witches andthings that go bumpin the night – there’snothing more fun forkids than Hallowe’enand the best part formost is going Trick orTreating.
When they are veryyoung this is no problembecause you will begoing with them but ifthey are older and wantto go with friends it canbe worrying.
National personal safe-ty charity the SuzyLamplugh Trust says itshouldn’t be as you caneasily make childrensafer and ensure yourown peace of mind bytaking the following pre-cautions.
Before they leave thehouse, impress on themthat they must stay withtheir friends and neverwander off alone, even ifit is to come home.
Discuss with themwhich route they will be
taking, which housesthey can visit and whenthey need to be back.
Make it clear that theyshould never enter any-one’s house – even thoseof people who theyknow, unless they havearranged it with youpreviously or they clearit on the telephone withyou first.
The same goes foraccepting lifts home inpeople’s cars.
Explain to them thatsome people, especiallythe elderly, can getfrightened or annoyedby Trick or Treating soit’s best to only visit peo-ple they know will enjoyit and if people don’tcome to the door thenthey should move on totheir next visit.
If possible, ensure theyhave a mobile phonewith them and that theyring home at regularintervals – and makesure they have a watch
Trick or Treat? Young ghouls on their Hallowe’enrounds.
with them so they can’tlose track of the time.
Be careful when makingtheir costume.
If they are going to becarrying a turnip orpumpkin lantern, thenmake sure that their cos-tume is flame-retardantand that it doesn’trestrict their movement.
It is a good idea to putreflective tape on theircostume to make themclearly visible when cross-ing roads.
Also, think about usingface paints instead of amask as some masks canstop the wearer seeingeasily, which could bedangerous in traffic.
Finally, if you are nothappy about your chil-dren Trick or Treating butdon’t want them to missout, why not hold yourown party – with fancydress, bobbing for apples, doughnuts on strings andall the other fun andgames of Hallowe’en?
