Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva
Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka laniThe announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,
He wekeweke i ka pö pilipukaIt is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,
He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikinaIt is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.
Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapaStreaks of red stain long cloud formations,
La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani läReposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;
‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ëI turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,
‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.
Hö mai lä kö mälamalamaBestow upon us your radiant light
I ka honua nei i ka mauli olaHere upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.
Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino neiHawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant
Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka läFrom its boundaries from the east to the west.
Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomanoIt wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,
Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo maiOf deep insight from the depths of antiquity.
‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülamaMy sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,
A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.
‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.
He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

Student Address
John F. “Jack” Gifford, founder and former CEO of Maxim Integrated Products and Advanced Micro Devices, is one of the “founding fathers” of the analog microchip industry. He earned a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1963 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), which he attended on a baseball scholarship, and where he maintains close ties. He was elected to UCLA’s baseball hall of fame in 1990, taking his place alongside the likes of Jackie Robinson, Dr. Bobby Brown, Kenny Washington, Mike Gallego, Tim Leary, Eric Karros, Todd Zeile and Don Slaught. He was also named 1991 Alumnus of the Year for the school’s College of Engineering, which he addressed as commencement speaker in 1992.
Mr. Gifford entered the semiconductor industry in 1964 when he went to work for Fairchild Semiconductor and became the company’s first Director of Analog Products. He co-founded Advanced Micro Devices in 1969 and remained as vice president of marketing and planning until leaving the company to become Senior Vice President, then President and CEO of Intersil, Inc., which was later acquired by General Electric (GE). As Senior Vice President, he was instrumental in the company’s pioneering development of low-power CMOS for analog applications. Mr. Gifford founded Maxim Integrated Products in 1983 with a vision of providing high-quality analog and mixed-signal engineering solutions for the technology industry. From its inception, he promoted a culture of high expectations and the concept that innovative product development could be scheduled and was not a random event. Maxim is now a worldwide leader in the design, development, and manufacture of analog, mixed signal, high frequency, and digital circuits. Mr. Gifford's industry achievements earned him numerous awards including CEO of the Year by Electronic Business Magazine in 2001 and America’s Best Semiconductor Industry CEO by Institutional Investor Magazine in 2005.
Mr. Gifford’s agricultural upbringing and avid interest in technology also led him to establish businesses outside the semiconductor industry. He embarked on a farming career in 1973 and in 10 years became one of the larger tomato growers in Northern California. The founder and President of businesses that include J. Leal Farms and Enslie Industries, Gifford was nominated for National Entrepreneur of the Year by Arthur Young in 1988.
Active in numerous scholastic and charitable activities involving children and education, Mr. Gifford has contributed to the University of California Hall of Science Lower Education Program, The Betty Kanuha Foundation and is a co-founder of the East Palo Alto Education and Tennis Foundation (EPATT). His background in science and athletics has convinced him that youth exposed to athletics will succeed in life if education is properly emphasized. This led him to establish Hawai`i’s Kalaeiki Baseball Youth Clinic five years ago, which offers a free four day clinic annually, featuring volunteer coaches from the major leagues and eight Division I Universities including UCLA, Stanford and Hawai`i. The overall aim of these efforts is to focus our youth on the value of Math and English education.
At today's ceremony, Mr. Gifford will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This award recognizes his distinguished reputation as a pioneer in the electronics industry and his public service in support of education programs for youth.
Linda Voong, an English and Political Science major, represents the class of 2007 as Student Speaker. Born in San Jose, California, Ms. Voong moved to Hawai`i at the age of four. She attended Hilo Union, Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High School before enrolling at UH Hilo.
Ms. Voong's academic achievements while pursuing a double major have earned her numerous awards including Presidential and Kiwanis Scholarships. She spent four months in Washington D.C., as an intern at the office of U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka. Active in campus affairs, she spent two years with the Model United Nations as a member, served as secretary and president of the Political Science Association, and was a Junior Kiwanis member.
When Ms. Voong and her sister Elaine receive their degrees, it will mark an important family milestone. The daughters of Chinese immigrants who fled their homeland to escape the war in Indochina, they represent their family's first generation to attend and graduate from college. Growing up, they spoke only Cantonese and did not begin to learn English until entering elementary school.
Ms. Voong's address will acknowledge the contributions UH Hilo's faculty and staff along with the Hilo community have made to the graduating class. She urges her classmates to find ways to contribute as alumni. "I want to encourage the graduates to remain here or at least come back at some point to contribute to the next graduating class and community as previous graduates have done," she said.
Voong hopes to become an attorney. She has worked for the past three years at the law office of Hilo attorney Douglas Halsted. Her post graduation plans include working for the next year, before applying for admission to law school in Fall 2008.

Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn by faculty during commencement comes from an old tradition dating from the Middle Ages. At that time all students were clerics. Academic regalia was worn to keep students warm as well as to identify the religious order to which the student belonged.
In America, academic costumes were established based on the intercollegiate code of 1895. Each aspect of the costume, such as gown color, mortarboard tassel, and sleeve shape, indicate something about the wearer and the highest degree received.
Most gowns are black, but some schools use brightly colored gowns. The color of the tassel indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer; a doctor’s cap frequently bears a tassel of gold. Sleeves that are pointed are worn by holders of a bachelor’s degree, oblong sleeves by holders of master’s degrees, and bell‐shaped sleeves indicate the wearer holds a doctorate or specialist degree. The doctor is distinguished by the three bars that adorn the sleeves of the gown.
The brightly colored hoods are the outstanding feature of the academic costume. They represent both the field of study and the university from which the degree was earned, as represented by the colors of both the border and the lining.
Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Lehua blossom flames leap high above Hilo,Hilo, proud bearer of the torch of wisdom, light for all to share.I shall always cherish the Kanilehua rain;Hilo, lush with vegetation, a lei reaching to the highest peaks.
Chorus:Rise up, O Hilo, wear proudly the mantle of enlightenment;Let us stand united in purpose, mind and heart.
