Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka laniThe announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,

He wekeweke i ka pØ pilipukaIt is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,

Keynote AddressNeil "Dutch" Kuyper

Named to his current position in 2011 as President and CEO of Parker Ranch Inc., and Paniolo Power Company, Neil “Dutch” was born and raised on O‘ahu. He graduated from Punahou School and earned his undergraduate degree from Occidental College and a Masters, (MBA), from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

Mr. Kuyper served as CEO with Capricorn Investment Group in Palo Alto, California and in a similar position with Morgan Creek Capital Management. His career reflects his extensive experience in highly respected management positions in association with Wellington Management, Boston Consulting Group, and Coopers & Lybrand.

After more than 20 years as a senior executive on the mainland and in Asia, “Dutch” returned home to Hawai‘i to carry out the legacy and vision of the late Parker Ranch heir Richard Smart. He is responsible for fulfilling the obligations to the Trust's beneficiaries and the Waimea community.

“Dutch” oversees the 130,000-acre cattle operation that produces 10 million pounds of beef per year. He believes that, while cattle ranching remains a vital element in Hawaii, new and diverse industries are imperative and currently being developed. He sees Parker Ranch emerging as a leader in sustainability, which he believes is both “good policy and good business.”

Mr. Kuyper's plans include transitioning much of the ranch's beef production back to the island from the mainland. He is also advancing multiple wind and solar projects in addition to those which already produce enough energy to power its own water system.

“Dutch” lives on the Big Island with his wife and four children.

A Message from the Student Association President

To the Graduating Class of Spring 2014, Congratulations on earning your degree! You've worked hard to get to this point. You've worked hard to obtain that seat in today‘s commencement ceremony. So, pat yourself in the back for a job well done. You went through multiple homework, research, research papers, tests, quizzes, presentations and much more these past few years to earn your degree.

Most of you will continue on to graduate school, start your own business, interview for a new job, begin a new family, or continue with an ongoing intern and much more. My fellow graduates, keep working hard to obtain the success you need. Work hard to get recognition you deserve for you, your family and your community. Be a role model and set a great example for the next generation.

Now, take a moment and think about the next few statements:

One of you will become the next President of the United States! One you will become the next millionaire in the history of America!

One of you will become one of the Deans at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo!

So, my fellow graduates, dream big and work hard to make your dreams come true. Please stay safe and make decisions wisely.

Finally, you all have done a tremendous job this semester. Congratulations and good luck on your future endeavors.

Go Vulcans!

Sincerely,

Joyce Pulega Auau UHHSA President University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association

Congratulatory Message

IN HONOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT HILO 2014 SPRING COMMENCEMENT

May 17, 2014

Aloha and congratulations to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo's Spring Class of 2014. I join your family, friends, professors and administrators in recognizing your outstanding achievement.

Your time at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo is now complete. Your hard work and commitment have brought you to this point, and the diplomas you receive will provide access to greater opportunities. In my case, public school education, which includes a diploma from UH, provided me with the foundation to pursue my passion for public service. Today I have the privilege to serve as your United States Senator.

I challenge each of you to aim high, and pursue your goals with unrelenting determination. Do not fear failure. Aspire to become leaders, and remember to seek ways to set an example and inspire others. As a reminder, remember to thank those individuals in your life who made an impact and who helped you make it to this day.

My warmest mahalo to the UH Hilo faculty and staff who have helped these students to excel. My best wishes to all of today's graduates.

Aloha,

Mazie K. Hirono United States Senator

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn‘s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight‘s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O‘er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket‘s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet waveO‘er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn by faculty during commencement comes from an old tradition dating from the Middle Ages. At that time all students were clerics. Academic regalia was worn to keep students warm as well as to identify the religious order to which the student belonged.

In America, academic costumes were established based on the intercollegiate code of 1895. Each aspect of the costume, such as gown color, mortarboard tassel, and sleeve shape, indicate something about the wearer and the highest degree received.

Most gowns are black, but some schools use brightly colored gowns. The color of the tassel indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer; a doctor‘s cap frequently bears a tassel of gold. Sleeves that are pointed are worn by holders of a bachelor‘s degree, oblong sleeves by holders of master‘s degrees, and bell-shaped sleeves indicate the wearer holds a doctorate or specialist degree. The doctor is distinguished by the three bars that adorn the sleeves of the gown.

The brightly colored hoods are the outstanding feature of the academic costume. They represent both the field of study and the university from which the degree was earned, as represented by the colors of both the border and the lining.

Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today‘s graduation candidates reflect their major.
