In the aftermath of the Counter Reformation and the religious and political turmoil that took place throughout much of Europe, the Baroque period produced works of art and architecture that rivaled-and in some cases surpassed-the art of Michelangelo, Raphael, Palladio, and its other Renaissance predecessors. This course traces the major developments in painting, sculpture, architecture, and urban planning from the late sixteenth through the seventeenth centuries in Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and England. Focusing on the leading artists of the Baroque period-Caravaggio, Bernini, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez, and others-the course will emphasize the thematic and stylistic characteristics of the Baroque, and will consider works of art within the religious, social, and political climate of the period.

The term "American Dream," coined in 1931, suggests an ability for us to reach complete success and happiness in our personal and professional lives. Much has changed in American society and culture since 1931 which might lead us to question if the American Dream is still possible. Through a selection of readings, this course will explore what we commonly now see as success and happiness in today's society and how those definitions compare to the definitions from eighty-five years ago. We will specifically challenge, revise, and defend the meaning of family, gender, education, and culture, and we will question the value of continuing to seek the American Dream.

Prerequisite: ENG 111, FYE 111, FYS 100, or permission of the instructor. Why are human beings often so ready to go to the most extreme and dangerous corners of our world? In this course we will explore new territory by engaging students in readings and writings about early and present-day western attempts to penetrate the forbidden land of Tibet, and conquer Mt. Everest-the highest point on our planet. We will travel the legendary "Silk Road" of Central Asia with the real-life archaeologists who inspired the Indiana Jones movies, in search of ancient lost cities, artwork, and manuscripts. Along the way, we'll study the collisions of different cultures and religions, the morality of removing art from one culture to another, and the power of climate change, warfare, and human migration to affect radical change on civilizations.

Prerequisite: ENG 111, FYE 111, FYS 100, or permission of the instructor. The great world keeps spinning, regardless of the human feats and foibles that consume our attention and rock our personal and community foundations. And yet, it is the narratives of individuals and their communities -- the culture in which they are immersed and the connections they come to share with others -- that often provide us with context from which we gather greater meaning. Through narratives, both fiction and nonfiction, we will explore individuals and their cultural connections from the heart of New Guinea in the early 20th century to Haiti, the Bronx, and the displaced Hmong people in California at the end of the 20th century. Our reading, research, and writing will touch upon such diverse subjects as faith beliefs, family constructs, poverty, illegal drugs, illness, and the quandaries presented by the inequalities of the medical and criminal justice systems. Ultimately, we will explore the value of human connection as we dance along the wire of history.

How do we think about issues like climate change, ocean acidification, energy use, consumption patterns, and most broadly, the changing relationship between people & the planet -- today, in the recent past, and into the foreseeable future? Is "environmental sustainability" more than just a buzzword or pipe dream? This course interrogates these and related enviro-questions via a diverse array of literatures, media, and activities.

Our human body defines our species. Our complex living system is the seat of consciousness and the machine that replicates and transmits our code for continued life. As the physical extension and stored repository of our worldly experiences, our body is crucial to self-identity. It is no surprise, then, that the depiction of the body is central to art. Our desires, our self-doubts, and our prejudices are all found in the way we represent ourselves. Through various modes of critical thinking, research, and writing, we will uncover, complicate, and question the history of human embodiment in the visual arts.

In a number of instances these ideas have eventually come to fruition, leading to good or bad consequences. Moreover, many scientists and engineers have used these creative speculations as inspirations to develop actual technologies. In this course we will examine several works of science fiction and the corresponding science and engineering behind the eventual technologies. We will also compare and contrast impacts on the societies in the stories and on societies in real life.

Some of the most engaging, hilarious, and informative examples in popular travel literature today come from Bill Bryson, whose book A Walk in the Woods was made into a movie in 2015. In this class, we will continue our own walk with Bryson as he explores the Appalachian Trail, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe. Students will investigate the culture of each destination through Bryson's historical references and personal, comedic reflections. This journey is designed to increase students' curiosity of the world around them, examine stereotypes and differences, and ultimately encourage students to pursue their own travel experiences and cultural explorations.

Much has changed in American society and culture since 1931 which might lead us to question if the American Dream is still possible. Through a selection of readings and films, this course continues to explore what we commonly now see as success and happiness in today's society and how those definitions compare to the definitions from eighty-five years ago. Students will challenge, revise, and defend the opportunities for individual success within the United States, focusing specifically on the impact gender and culture have on an individual's ability to succeed. We will analyze texts such as Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Harron's American Psycho. Students will learn about milestones in the development of the horror genre in film and literature, gain an understanding of introductory terminology in film and literary analysis, and discover the main theories about why audiences enjoy horror.

As TV watchers, magazine readers, movie-goers, web-surfers, and students we are bombarded by images and representations of what it means to be a man or a woman in contemporary society. In the first semester of this course, we examined many of these images and representations. The second semester of this course will examine the ways that gender intersects with other forms of identity, such as race, class, and sexuality. Through our analysis of film, television, print, music, literature and online media depictions, we will work on better understanding the way discourse creates knowledge of intersectional identities and how that knowledge affects us as individuals in the United States. Through discussion and writing we will explore our own perceptions and experiences as well as analyze experiences as represented by others.

Deepen your knowledge of musical theatre repertoire! You'll be assigned one composer/lyricist team at a time. From there you'll research their lives and work and then choose some of their songs to perform in class. You'll be coached dramatically and vocally on the songs in a way that allows for vocal and dramatic freedom.

What is the meaning of life? Does life have purpose, or are our lives merely an absurdity? These are the questions that inspired the Existentialist philosophers, and they will be the basis for this seminar in the history of philosophy. The course will be a focused study of many of the main texts, thinkers, and themes in existentialist philosophy, and will include both religious and atheistic perspectives. It will be taught as an seminar that requires students to be actively engaged in class discussion.

January 05, 2017 Spring 2017 Course Schedule Page 37
Prerequisite: one course in philosophy or permission of the instructor. This course will investigate the philosophy of the 18th Century German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, and the scope of this "critical project." In our readings, we will examine the way that Kant's theoretical project in The Critique of Pure reason provides the foundation for his broader philosophical projects. Special attention will be given to the legacy of Kant's thinking today in relation to the philosophy of science and the nature of human cognition. Beyond the study of philsophy, the course material will have particular relevance for students studying biology, psychology, neuoroscince, physics, and political science.

Prerequisite: REL/PHL 450 in good standing, or permission of the instructor. Cross-listed with REL 451-01. This team-taught, reading-intensive advanced seminar course is the second course in a 2 course sequence. It provides students an opportunity for in depth study not only of the New Testament writings of the Apostle Paul, but also of critical scholarship about the historical, political, cultural, and religious context of Paul's time, and contemporary philosophical, religious, and political reappraisals of Paul's legacy in the development of early Christian thought. As students become familiar with Paul's epistles, they will gain skills related to scriptural exegesis and will be introduced to a spectrum of contemporary reappraisals of Paul's legacy. The spring semester will be writing-intensive with the aim for students to present their research at an academic conference and to prepare their final research paper for eventual publication.
