MUCH-NEEDED PRAYER
Each Christian needs half an hour of prayer each day, except when we are busy; then we need an hour. —St. Francis de Sales

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave. —Rev. WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. The Society of St. Vincent DePaul St. Andrew the Apostle Conference neighbor helping neighbor… Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304
All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.
In today’s Gospel Jesus greatly exceeds the apostle’s and the crowd’s expectations: He fed them with his inspiring messages and with the food that once was little but now feeds so many; giving example of God’s presence and his love for all mankind.
Consider sharing the love of God by your prayer and doing good works. Our conference of St. Vincent de Paul works to spread our faith by helping those who are suffering due to unemployment, illness and other devastating circumstances.
Please consider joining our friendly, dedicated group who visit those in need in their homes. We will be having a membership drive at the end of September or you can contact our help line: say you are interested in volunteering and we will return your call with more information. Call our help line: (815) 886-4165 Ext. 304. Peace be with you!

"Yolanda" came to Waterleaf very uncertain about her future; she was pregnant and already the mother of four.
While she was working, her husband was unemployed, and they were struggling financially. She felt abortion to be her best option. After meeting with her Waterleaf Advocate about the effects of abortion, parenting another child, as well as making an adoption plan, she agreed she had a "lot to think about". We reminded her to wait until we confirmed a viable pregnancy prior to deciding, and she was open to this. She was tearful throughout her appointment and while she agreed adoption was a gift, she struggled with the idea. We checked back in with her a few days later and she indicated that she was still feeling very overwhelmed and they didn't feel ready for another baby. When Yolanda returned for her second ultrasound, she said that she and her husband were thinking of keeping the baby and were hoping for a girl! After seeing the images on the ultrasound screen, she was even more convinced that keeping the baby was the right choice. We offered her assistance with resources and provided diapers and wipes for her youngest child. In addition, we were able to apply for Project Love to assist her with rent payment. We were so happy to recently learn of her delivery of a healthy baby boy named "Andrew". Yolanda and her husband are grateful for the assistance from Waterleaf which helped them make the choice of life!
Waterleaf would like to extend a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Parish for their amazing support through the monthly envelope campaign. As of July 12, 2018, the parishioners at St. Andrew have collected $12,448.00! Your support ensures that we can provide the material and emotional support necessary for men and women to choose life for their babies. Sometimes, just the simple fact that our doors are open, and a woman visits us, rather than an abortion provider, is the difference between life and death. We greatly appreciate your support and ask that you keep Waterleaf in your prayers. For information about Waterleaf and our programs and services, please contact us at 630-701-6270 or visit us on the web at www.onechoiceonelife.org.

Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.
Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s. Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION
CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION
Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT
MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
